THE ROLES OF SCHOOL PRINCIPAL IN SUPERVISION FOR


EDUCATIONAL QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: AS BEEN ADOPTED
AND PRACTISED BY THE PRINCIPAL OF CONVENT PEEL ROAD
SECONDARY SCHOOL

The quality of education plays an important role in any country’s pursuit of economic growth and
national development. Through the new National Education Blueprint, the Ministry of Education
Malaysia has identified eleven shifts to transform the education system, in order to achieve an
excellent quality of education. In line with the expectation and aspiration of the government, close
monitoring and persistent supervision are required to obtain a positive impact or general improvement
on the educational quality. As been adopted and in practice at Convent Peel Road Secondary School
(an all girls Government School), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, it is proven that the role of the school
principal in supervision is really effective and relevant here. The great challenges in the 21st century
and the need to prepare the students to face these challenges are the reasons to adopt a systematic
supervision by the school principal. Basically, the school has adopted a holistic development of
children intelectually, spiritually, emotionally, and physically, which are in line with The National
Education Philosophy. In Convent Peel Road Secondary School, there are some interesting activities
related to the school supervision best practices can be shared with other school principals, for the
betterment of teaching and the overall school quality. In general, the main focus in supervision, which
will be highlighted for the sharing, is basically on the student aspirations which include the process of
garnering knowledge, developing thinking skill, leadership skill, bilingual proficiency, nurturing ethics
and spirituality, and establishing a good national identity.
