ROLE OF ENGINEERS IN DEVELOPING INDIA

INTRODUCTION
Engineers are the lifeline of an economy. Engineers contribute in the
development of infrastructure, transportation, medicinal facilities, sustainable
energy, defense and the list goes on. The industries that are run by engineers
holds a major share of its economic contribution (26% of GDP in 2013–14). India
has one of the largest automobile industry in the world.
Engineering is the largest sub-sector of India's industrial sector, by GDP, and the
third-largest by exports. Transport equipment, machine tools, capital goods,
transformers, switchgears, furnaces, and cast and forged parts for turbines,
automobiles and railways are included in this. The industry employs about four
million workers.
India is the 12th-largest producer and 7th-largest consumer of machine tools.
CHALLENGES
Engineers are doing tremendous work in India but still there are some challenges
with Indian engineers, especially with the future upcoming enginees. Some of
the challenges are as follows:-
• While 97% want jobs either in software or core engineering, only 3% are good
enough to be engineers in software/product roles, and only 7% can handle core
engineering tasks.
• Only 11% find jobs in knowledge-intensive sectors because their English skills
are poor (74%), as are their analytical or quantitative skills (58%).
• A student from a tier-3 college will get Rs 66,000 per annum less than a student
of equal merit from a tier-1 college.

CONCLUSION
Although there are challenges with the Indian engineers but we should not
forgot that many renowned engineers have emerged from India. Engineers like
Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya have moved the world by their engineering
skills. Government of India is also helping in the development of engineers.
Schemes like “Make In India” is doing a major contribution in bringing us the best
engineers from the country.
