TEACHER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 2

Abstract

The basis of this article discusses the importance of teacher development programs, and the
main reason is because students deserve the best. By providing teachers with training and
development tools, it will better prepare teachers for the classroom. It discusses the best
teacher programs and how they provide student teachers to spend time in real classrooms to
experience the day-to-day functions with supervision from a master or veteran teacher.

Literary Review: Why is Teacher Development Important?: Because Students Deserve the Best

This article struck me very close to home, as I just attained my Multiple Subject Teaching

Credential and aspire to get into a classroom of my own very shortly. As I reflect on my

credentialing program, I was very pleased with the experience and hands-on learning I was able

to complete with the aid of master teachers in two different grade levels. This article talks

about the importance of developing a beginning teachers and continually supporting and

training teachers throughout their years of service. The first paragraph really provided a sense

of excitement to know how important a teacher’s job is that schools should be willing to invest

into them to better the learning in the classroom and in turn better the education the students

are getting. “Great teachers help create great students,” is a simple as quote as you can get

when it comes to teacher development. The better a teacher is prepared, trained, supported,

and provided tools to teach, the more engaging the teacher will be with their classroom of

students.

“Nearly half of all teachers leave the profession in their first five years, so more

attention must be paid to providing them with early and adequate support, especially if they

are assigned to demanding school environments” (Edutopia, 2008). Universities and school

districts are realizing this importance and developing mentoring and coaching from veteran

colleagues to creating success in the development of new teachers. Just like other professions,

learning from veteran professionals, teaching is a process where learning from best practices

and analysis is critical and the ability to reflect on the various teachings. This allows beginner

teachers continued learning to ensure they gain experience and reflection for their own

classroom.

As much as teacher-induction programs are beneficial to provide guidance and support

for new teachers, ongoing professional development is just as critical for veteran teachers. The

importance of always training “keeps teachers up-to-date on new research on how children

learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, new curriculum resources, and more”

(Edutopia, 2008). These training will align with the TPE 6, which is developing as a professional

educator. It will “reflect on their own teaching practice and level of subject matter and

pedagogical knowledge to plan and implement instruction that can improve student learning”

(California CTC, 2016).

To better educate today’s students, teachers need to continually develop their

instruction and enhance the lessons to create an engaged classroom. Being a successful teacher

is more than a one person job, it incorporates building a peer relationship that works together

and collaborates ideas to provide insight on best practices and how to instill lessons into

students that are engaging and promote growth.
