According to David Gwynn’s research, “Selecting a new integrated library system requires attention to
both the “back end” and “front end”

Austria, et.al (2007), mentioned that it is good to use visual basic as the public user service of the system
and SQL server as the technical service. Also the minimum software requirements are Microsoft XP(p.
65).

Based on Arlene C. Austria et. al study (2007), “The ILS needs more powerful databases design a higher
version of microprocessor to make the system perform efficiently and also the compatibility of the system
must be considered in connecting the server and its client”

Enriquez, et al (2009), States that computer unit, monitor, mouse, keyboard and printer are essential in the
operation of the system. It is needed so that the user can interact to the system by searching through the
database contents and maximize the use of the system functions and features (p.iii)

Databases are among the most common information management tools in existence, whether manual or
computerized. In a variety of different forms, they have played a significant role in human history for
thousands of years. (de Castro et al.;2005)

(ABSTRACT)

According to Jared P Lucas, et. al (2006) “An integrated library system essential functions are
borrowing, returning of books and registration for old and new members”

There may be many discovery environments, which then need to locate resources in particular collections.
While the catalogue may be a part of the location process its role in the discovery process needs to be
worked through. (Dempsey, 2006, p.2)1

According to manjunath (2005), the library automation can be visualized at four levels; library
cataloguing system, house keeping operations and networking; development of CD-ROM library /
product and email system and internet.

David gwynn(2009), his research led to following selection criteria as essential or at least “things
that must be considered” Technical Services, Cataloguing, Circulation, User Services/OPAC
Interface and General Considerations Not Specific to This Institution

Arabejo(2004), stated that, “A system must consist of most common library transactions like borrowing,
returning and cataloguing. The system must also include some additional features that are of big use to
the user.”

Jared P Lucas, et. al (2006) Based on the findings of their case study different user level is a factor that
can help in the system security

The current Library method of manual recording and generation of reports has become inefficient and
delayed (Ignacio, 2006)

The increasing number of collection and records to data management problems such as lost or misplaced
materials, slow data recovery, data inaccuracy, and many others. These problems are typical using the
manual system so libraries also demanded automated information system to administer their work
(Caraldo, 2005).

Stone (2005), in his thesis about a digital library system for Biological Data, said that the days of the card
catalog in the local library are long gone. Even in the smallest of town libraries have computerized search
engines to find and organize the wealth of the information on their shelves. Intelligent agents that
combine user profiling, data mining and artificial intelligent technology can be developed to provide
many of the services that have traditionally been offered by the library.

The library computer system is the software used for the catalog, track circulation and inventories library
assets. It is intended for home, church private enterprise or other small to medium size collections. Larger,
first world libraries will typically use an integrated library system to manage the more complex activities
such as acquisition and reference interview(http://en.wikipedia.org:2007)

If the computer is to be considered as clerk then it will be able to do clerical work efficiently quickly and
accurately, and if the library work load grows it will still be accommodated by a computer without
needing for an additional staff (Austria et al p.14 2007)

Austria et al (2007 p. 13) “ library are virtually reinventing themselves in the face of information media
such as internet. It has been said that “without question the most desirable skill for the era is the ability to
manage radical change”
The benefits of integrated library system gain satisfaction rating according to linda m. Riewe(2008,p.1)
from the survey of open source integrated library system

Based on jane miller’s research “ILMS represent considerable technology

investment by libraries. The success of library process change and information retrieval has
been built around the functionality of the ILMS”.
.

“The context of their study is to provide a library system for Bulacan State University that will help
librarians and users to have an easy access on library materials and for the modernization of the library
system from manual to computer generated library system.”

“The AB Institute of Science aims to upgrade their existing system to a well defined computer library
system namely A LAN Based Library System that is intended to benefit library personnel and library
user. They make use of instruments and analytical tools to guide them in their study.”
