Welcome to
Significant Small Craft of 1999
~ce again, this second edition of Significant Small Craft follows the well-established
Vfootsteps of Significant Ships and incorporates an individual selection of some of the
vessels under 100m that, for one reason or another, have made news during 1999. It may be
claimed that any vessel approaching this upper length limit hardly deserves the description
'small', but the title does help distinguish this volume from its sister publication, in the same
way that the two RINA magazines, Ship & Boat International and The Naval Architect,
differ in content. However arbitrary the 100m dimension may be, in this context it separates
'small craft' from 'big ships'.
It also needs emphasising that although many of the craft described characterise the current
state of their respective arts, the adjective 'significant' does not necessarily relate to
performance and high technology. Certain vessels warrant their inclusion as 'firsts' either
for their country or yard of origin. A vessel considered sophisticated in one part of the
world may be regarded as 'run-of-the mill' in another. Smaller boatbuilders winning
unusually large contracts or pushing forward their own particular technological boundaries
undoubtedly merit their place.
One or two selections may appear bizarre but I make no apology - for these are the craft
that have appealed to my team and me over the year and we do not propose to offer any
justification. Examples such as Kotug's Rotor Tugs, Far Sovereign, Humber Callisto and ,
Geco Eagle justify themselves and will, it is hoped, satisfy the purist.
The broad coverage of Ship & Boat International, which includes all sizes of pilot and
patrol boats, pollution control craft, tugs, fast ferries, salvage craft and offshore vessels,
causes another selection problem. Should one attempt to include an example of each or is it
wiser to reflect activity in the industry as it transpired during the year? In some fields, of
course, things change little whilst in others, progress is rapid. Frankly, as always, a
compromise has been made.
Thanks are due to all the naval architects, yards and owners that have furnished
information. A couple of GA drawings have been omitted at the owners' request but it is
hoped that the descriptions will compensate.

In 1998 Atlantide was shipped as deck cargo to the UK yard of
Camper & Nicholsons. Here, craftsmen could implement the
ambitious designs and engineers could work on the onboard
machinery. This included removing and refitting the two 230hp
vintage Gardner 8L3B engines, deck work, systems installation,
creation of a new teak wheelhouse and major work to form a fully
fitted galley and extensive crew quarters for eight.
C&C Designs, based in Norfolk, UK, was appointed to fit out
the social areas of the vessel based on its previous success in
refitting Paul Getty's yacht Talitha G. The project involved the
installation of 1,500ft3 of teak, 14 miles of cable and 470 lights.
This element of the project also took 12 months.
Now fully restored and embellished, Atlantide will be based in
Antibes and has a job of work to do - acting as tender to the
owner's other pride and joy, a 1915 classic racing schooner
Mariette. To enable it to perform its duties, the wheelhouse is
surrounded by Lalique light ramps, inlay marquetry in Madrona deceptively well-equipped with an Anschutz autopilot and
and Macasar ebony and fibre optics. Every part of the yacht has gyrocompass, FUrLInoradar and Leica GPS. In modern style, all
been given the same attention to detail, including the use of abalone the machinery can be monitored from the wheelhouse through a
