It was sunny yet very cold weather outside the other when we decided to take all the children

outside. So got everyone to line up to make sure they wear their jackets before they go outside.

Once most of the children had gone outside I turned around to see that both Ali and Zaid were
still standing with their friend Ahmad. So I asked them where are their jackets. Ali responded
“we didn’t wear it today”. Then continued to add “My mum forgot to give it to us”.

So we went to look for centre jackets for them. I found 2. Ali put his jacket on and after some
hesitation Zaid put on the hoodie I found for him. But as I came out of the room behind them
Zaid had taken his hoodie back off. I said to him that he can’t go outside without a jacket and
got Ali to say to him in Arabic.

Zaid dropped himself to the ground and refused to put his jacket on. I said to him that he needs
to stay in classroom and he did. I kept checking on him for the next few minutes. Zaid was just
sitting alone in the room. After about ten minutes he came to me and asked me to put the
hoodie on him. He wore the hoodie and kept it on the whole time we were out.

Today Zaid learnt that there are kaupapa, rules and routines that he must respect and abide by
which is one of Zaid’s learning goals. Through persistence he also realized that it is more fun
when rules are followed.

Zaid’s next learning steps are to continue to provide him with persistent reminder of the rules,
kaupaa, and routines of the centre so that very soon nsha Allah he becomes more independent.
