“Alif Ba Ta”…

Over the past few months I have been observant of Sameeha fast learning nature. At 2 years
old she has a vast vocabulary in both English and her native language. She is a curious little
one and always asks lots of questions. Her favorite questions are “what is this?” and “but why?”

Today when I came into the room after lunch she was standing on a chair behind teacher
Heather and was singing the Alif Ba Ta song which looking at the Arabic Alphabet poster. I sat
down next to her while Teacher Heather went on her break. As soon as she finished singing the
alif ba ta she began to ask “what is this?” pointing at the pictures.

Luckily the Arabic words for each picture were written as I can only read Arabic language and
my command of language is limited. We we came across words that she already knew in
English or Pashto she first said them then asked me what they were in Arabic, the clever girl.
After we read through all the words she asked me to sing the song with her again and then again
pointing at the pictures each time she asked me what it was.

Sameeha here was enhancing her learning disposition of curiosity as well as developing her
learning goal; developing language. She was referring to her prior knowledge and making
reference between the 3 languages she is fimilier with. As teachers we will continue to provide
Sameeha with more learning experiences to further develop her language acquisition in English,
Pashto and Arabic.
