Understanding the Public Safety Legislation
1006.12: Safe-school officers at each public school. For the protection and safety of school
personnel, property, students, and visitors, each district school board and school district
superintendent shall partner with law enforcement agencies to establish or assign one or more
safe-school officers at each school facility within the district by implementing any
combination of the following options which best meets the needs of the school district:
1. Establish school resource officer [sworn officer of local Sherriff’s office] programs through a
cooperative agreement with law enforcement agencies
2. Commission one or more school safety officers [sworn officer of local school district police
department] for the protection and safety of school personnel, property, and students with
the school district.
3. At the school district’s discretion, participate in the school marshal program if such program is
established pursuant to s. 30.15, to meet the requirement of establishing a safe-school
officer.

assailant incidents.

School Guardians have no authority to act in any

law enforcement capacity.

Excludes individuals who exclusively perform

School Safety Assistant – Essential Functions

School Guardian
Main Responsibilities
• Use whatever force necessary to prevent or abate an active assailant incident.
• Conduct perimeter and inner school checks to ensure premises are secure.
• Monitor students on school property to ensure their safety.
• Participate in all school emergency drills (Fire, Code Red, etc.).
• Refer observations and incidents to the appropriate school personnel for follow-
up.
• Assist with administrative searches when directed to do so.
• Prepare a variety of documents (security logs, memos, letters, etc.) and read and
respond to email communications.

Requirements for School Guardian Certificate
• Must hold a valid weapon carry permit under s 790.06,
Florida Statutes
• Must submit to and pass an initial drug test and
subsequent random screenings (JSO Cost)
• Must pass a psychological evaluation (JSO Cost)
• Must complete training conducted by JSO or other
state of Florida certified law enforcement agency.
• Must complete at least 12 hours of a certified
nationally recognized diversity training program
• Must successfully complete ongoing training, weapon
inspection and firearm qualifications annually
