Introduction
This Special Instruction provides information for installation of the 468-3606 Electrical Installation Gp Service
Kit.

Reference: Systems Operation, UENR7061, "Machine Security System (MSS3s)" for more information on
operation.

The MSS Universal Attachment Kit is intended for use on all products (Caterpillar or other manufacturer) that are
without the MSS Custom Kit.

Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this publication, or order any parts until you understand this
information.

Note: Before you install the Machine Security System on a machine, check for other Electronic Control Modules
(ECM) on the machine. Machines that are equipped with other electronic control modules must not use the
Machine Security System to disable the "MAIN POWER" of the machine. This will prevent the Machine Security
System from disabling the other ECM's on the machine in the event of a failure of the Machine Security System.

Note: The Advanced Machine Security System is a Software Enabled Attachment (SEA). To add this attachment,
the "Advanced Machine Security" status must be installed in the ECM configuration (Cat® Electronic Technician
(Cat ET) and factory password required).

Important Safety Information

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to
observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous
situations before an accident occurs.

A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person must also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to
perform these functions properly. Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the
product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons.
Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance of a potential hazard.

Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Avoid
using a tool, a procedure, a work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar. If used,
ensure the safety of the operating personnel and others.

Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and
understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and
Maintenance Manuals. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the
warnings could result in injury or death. Contact your Cat dealer for
replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

Electrocution Hazard! Keep the machine and attachments a safe distance

from electrical power. Stay clear 3 m (10 ft) plus twice the line insulator
length. Read and understand the instructions and warnings in the

Pre-installation Survey of the Machine

The pre-installation survey of the machine is listed below:

Batteries give off flammable fumes which can explode.

To avoid injury or death, do not strike a match, cause a spark, or smoke

in the vicinity of a battery.

https://sisweb.cat.com/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisweb/s... 15/12/2017

1. Check for space around the key switch to mount the exciter coil. If there is no room to mount the exciter
coil, then assess how you can move the key switch to an alternate location. This location should allow you to
mount the exciter coil and still allow the operator to insert and turn the key. The 213-2323 Plate Assembly
will aid in mounting the key switch if an alternate location is necessary.

2. Check for a location to mount the 467-9245 Electronic Control Module (Machine Security System)

◦ Locate the ECM nearby the key switch so that the harness, when routed between the ECM and the key
switch, does not require alterations.

◦ Also select a location that is not obvious to a thief, but accessible for the service person.

◦ The ECM has specific hardware to make the unit hard to access and remove. Be sure to use all
supplied nuts, bolts.

◦ DO NOT alter the length of the wiring between the MSS ECM and the exciter coil. If this length is
altered, the system will not be compliant with FCC requirements, and may not operate properly.

◦ DO NOT install the MSS ECM or the relays in engine compartments or other high-heat locations.
Doing so may result in early device failure and void the warranty.

◦ DO NOT locate the MSS ECM in the battery box. The relays on the MSS ECM may ignite the battery
gases causing an explosion.

◦ DO NOT install the ECM anywhere in the machine where submersion in water is likely to occur. If
the MSS ECM is submersed in water, the machine may not start.

3. Check the service connector to determine if the machine is equipped with a 14-pin service connector. If the
machine is equipped with a 9-pin service connector, no further action is required. If the machine is equipped
with the 14-pin service connector, refer to "Machine Equipped with 14 Pin Service Connector" section for
further information on extra parts required and instructions on modifying the 459-2251 Control Harness As.

Disassembly of the Machine

Follow the below steps for disassembly of the machine:

1. Use the proper safety procedures to secure the machine during installation of the Machine Security System.

2. Turn off the power to machine using the battery disconnect switch or disconnect the terminals from the
batteries

3. Remove any panels and components to gain access to:

◦ The area around the key switch

◦ The mounting area for the ECM

◦ Wiring for the main relay

◦ Wiring for the start relay

◦ The routing path for the MSS wiring harness
