Characterization/Development

Romeo: Romeo is a Montague which means he is taught growing up them as Montagues must hate the Capulets.
Fortunately, he does not believe in such things. He falls in love with a CAPULET named Juliet and shows his deep
affection for her with many loving actions. He feels that without Juliet, there would be no place in the world for him.

Juliet: Juliet is a Capulet and is taught almost the same thing as Romeo: they must hate the Montagues. Juliet used to not
think about love and marriage at all. She didn’t see it as very important to her. But, that changes as soon as she falls
in love with Romeo. Juliet feels the same as Romeo feels for her. They love each other very much and both believe
that there would be no place in the world without each other.

Conflict (External)

Capulets vs Montagues: The Capulets and Montagues have a long history of hating each other. While this is not known
as to why they hate each other, both families intend on keeping this tradition the same. These family conflicts make it
impossible for Romeo and Juliet to marry each other.

Romeo’s place instead and is killed by Tybalt. Seeking revenge, Romeo decides to fight Tybalt and kills him. This news
is spread to the Prince and Juliet. Juliet out of love will not believe that this happened and the Prince declares that
Romeo is banished from the city of Verona as punishment. In act 4, Juliet speaks with Friar Lawrence and comes up
with a plan to see Romeo again. Juliet goes home and her dad tells her she is going to marry Paris. She drinks the
potion Friar Lawrence gives her and goes to sleep. The next morning the nurse comes to Juliet’s room and sees that
Juliet is “dead”. Her wedding then becomes a funeral. In act 5, Romeo is informed and comes to her funeral. He is sad
from the death of Juliet and drinks poison given to him by the Apothecary. Juliet wakes up and sees Romeo dead. She
is saddened from his death and commits suicide with a dagger. Both the Capulet and Montagues agree to stop their
fighting with each other after their deaths.

Themes

Fate: In the first scene the chorus describe both Romeo and Juliet as being star-crossed
lovers. This means that both Romeo and Juliet were controlled by fate. No matter how they
lived their lives, they would still fall in love with each other in the end and die as it was
written in their stars.

Love: The power of love is undeniable, it causes people to turn their backs on their family’s
history, abandon family members, and lie to their loved ones. You will do anything it takes
to get to be with each other.

Well, do not swear. Although I joy in thee,
I have no joy of this contract tonight.
It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden,
Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be
Ere one can say “It lightens.” Sweet, good
night.
This bud of love, by summer’s ripening

May prove a beauteous flower when next we

Good night, good night! As sweet repose and
rest
Come to thy heart as that within my breast.
