AND LANDING (VTOL) SMALL UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEM (SUAS) TRAINING

1. Situation. The ability to integrate VTOL SUAS at the squad level, the
situational awareness and force protection capability these platforms can
provide in training events while leading up to a deployment are integral to
1st Battalion, 1st Marines’ success. While deployed, utility of VTOL SUAS
provides squad leaders the ability to understand the battlespace and the
effects of enemy and terrain on friendly forces over-the-hill. Having trained
Marines who can operate VTOL SUAS will provide an expeditionary collection
asset in direct support of squad and platoon leadership.

2. Mission. From 23 July to 3 August 2018, Tactical Logistics and Support


Activity (TALSA) West will facilitate Quads for Squads training IOT develop
VTOL SUAS operators and enable collection and force protection at the squad
level.

3. Execution.

a. Commander’s Intent.

Purpose: Develop VTOL SUAS operators and enable collection and


force protection at the squad level.

Method: TALSA West instructors will facilitate training on PD-


100 Black Hornet and InstantEye utilizing formal periods of instruction at
the RIF and flight training in LZ Horno, requiring (2) training days for each
Marine. All participants will cycle through each period of instruction over
the two-week period.

Endstate: VTOL SUAS operators are able to support their squads,


platoons and companies with an over-the-hill force protection and collection
capability.

b. Concept of Operations. Quads for Squads training will be


conducted in two phases.

(1) Phase 1: Identification and Screening of Participants.


Phase 1 begins with tasked companies identifying qualified Marines. Company
staff will screen interested Marines to ensure they meet requirements listed
in the Coordinating Instructions. Phase I ends with assignment of Marines to
Quads for Squads training and sets conditions for them to attend the event
from 23 July to 3 August 2018. Critical events in Phase I include S-2

disseminating requirements for Marines to become VTOL SUAS trained,


identification and screening of qualified Marines by the respective
companies, submission of names to S-2 NLT COB 13 July 2018 and roster
provided by the S-2 displaying training date assignments.

(2) Phase 2: Quads for Squads training on 23 July to 3 August


2018. Phase 2 begins at 0800 on 23 July 2018 at the RIF. For each
participant, Training Day 1 will consist of classroom instruction at the RIF.
Training Day 2 will consist of flight training at LZ Horno. Directions are
included as Enclosure (1). Phase 2 ends with completion of instruction and
closing remarks from TALSA West.

(a) Scheme of Maneuver:

Phase 1: Identification and Screening of Operators: Prior to 6


July 2018, each company will identify and screen (18) Marines (2 per Line
Squad) that will be VTOL SUAS operators for the battalion’s deployment in
support of MRF-D.

Phase 2: Conduct of Training: Classroom Instruction and Flight


training will be conducted from 0800 to 1600, Monday through Friday for (2)
weeks. Each Marine will participate in (2) Training Days.

c. Tasks

(1) S-2A
Task: Coordinate and supervise the conduct of the VTOL SUAS
training facilitated by TALSA West.
Purpose: IOT ensure instructors receive all required
support to effectively train participating Marines.

(2) S-2 Section


Task: Provide (6) Marines to conduct Quads for Squads
training.
Purpose: IOT support training on VTOL SUAS and facilitate
future internally-run VTOL SUAS training for qualified
Marines across Battalion.

(3) Alpha Company


Task: Provide (18) Marines to conduct Quads for Squads
training.
Purpose: IOT support training on VTOL SUAS and enable
collection and force protection at the squad level.

(4) Bravo Company


Task: Provide (18) Marines to conduct Quads for Squads
training.
Purpose: IOT support training on VTOL SUAS and enable
collection and force protection at the squad level.

(5) Charlie Company


Task: Provide (18) Marines to conduct Quads for Squads
training.
Purpose: IOT support training on VTOL SUAS and enable
collection and force protection at the squad level.

d. Coordinating Instructions

(1) Timeline: Date assignments and training details will be


published prior to 13 July 2018.

(2) Gear List: Marines attending the Quads for Squads training
will need the following materials:

- Note Taking Material


- Pen
- Pencil
- Hydration Source

(3) Requirements: Marines selected by the companies will


meet the following criteria:

- Minimum GT Score 110


- Deploying with 1/1 on MRF-D
- Lance Corporal or above
- Provide Documented Medical Qualification Letter from
Battalion Surgeon (see Enclosure (2))

4. Administration and Logistics

a. Administration

(1) Training materials will be provided to the Marines by S-2


Section.

b. Logistics

(1) All logistics provided by the Intelligence Section.
