ABSTRACT

The study assessed the challenges encountered in using Cooperative Learning

Approach (CLA), its effectiveness in improving the performance of the Grade 11 Technical

Vocational and Livelihood (TVL) and General Academic Strands (GAS) students in

Statistics as perceived by the school head and the strategies employed by the teacher in

facilitating CLA in class. Results were the basis for crafting guidelines in facilitating CLA

in class.

Salient findings of the study include: most of the problems were less encountered

with an obtained mean of 2.27 for TVL and 1.75 for GAS students; improved performance

of the respondents, TVL students got a weighted mean of 33.56 for chapter tests, 74.8 mean

in the long test, and 38.9 mean in the periodical test; Grade 11 GAS students got a weighted

mean of 34.85, 81.98 in long test, and 39.00 in the 3rd periodical test. The school head

perceived Cooperative Learning Approach (CLA) in class as effective with an obtained

mean of 3.44. The teacher employed several strategies such as Think Pair and Share (TPS),

Round Robin, and Formal Cooperative Learning Group. She also employed informal group

works that involved plays or games like pass the ball, cabbage relay, define me, toss dice,

classify me, and pass it on.

The researcher concludes that Cooperative Learning Approach (CLA) was

effective in improving the performance of the respondents aided by several strategies

employed by the teacher. The challenges encountered in using CLA were less encountered,
