f. Summary: It is extremely important for teachers to be aware of the lives that their
students are living. Without considering student’s backgrounds (school, community,
etc.), the teacher could overlook key information for better understanding where their
students come from and how they live each day. A way that a teacher could narrow in
on their students is to pay attention to the race of their students. The author, Gist,
provides a “teachable moment” for the readers about how to properly use race as a tool
to better understand students and their backgrounds and goals. The teacher in this
example is working with a class of mostly Black students. Her students our disappointed
about the opportunities that the students feel they have. So, the teacher uses their own
experiences to help relate to the students and encourage each of them to be the
supportive community that they all need. By being racially conscious, the teacher was
able to break the problem down and address it in the most positive and constructive
way for those students.

f. Summary: A critical piece to a child’s academic success is having the parents’ support
and involvement especially when at home. Because parental involvement is such an
important piece to every child’s success, the UK Government has been focusing a lot of
time and resources to create and provide teachers and parents programs to help build
positive relationships. They believe the most effective way for creating these
relationships between home and school is through technology. There are two programs
that are being used in UK school system today that are working to close the gap
between home and school. One program is the ICT Test Bed project and that it provides
parents with a look at their child’s attendance, homework, etc. This program was
implemented at across three clusters of 28 schools in the area. One of the clusters chose
to provide each home with a computer and internet access. The other two clusters took
different routes. The other program is the Homework Project and it is a study that
investigated the teachers, parents, and students working together to design lessons and
provide resources that can be used at school or home. By working together, each of the
three aspects (teacher, parent, student) are getting their needs met by the other two.
The UK school systems are still investigating the best ways to support learning at school
and home.
