Dear Rockingham County Advisory Board:

I chose the topic of LED lighting and its benefits over more conventional incandescent and
fluorescent lighting. Through research and the assistance of experts in the field I will present to
the Board that LED is the light source of the future. I am currently Interning at Womack Electric
Supply where I am seeing the transition to LED lighting and find it very interesting.

As I research LED lighting, I will focus on lighting efficiency, energy efficiency, and maintenance
cost savings. What are LEDs? What makes LED lighting different from conventional
incandescent and fluorescent lighting? How does LED lighting save electricity? How does an
LED fixture project light more efficiently? How does LED lighting save on maintenance costs?
How does it benefit the environment?

I plan to show the potential savings of LED lighting over the existing conventional fluorescent
and metal halide fixtures in our gymnasium at Rockingham County High School. I plan to
replace some of the lighting in the gym with LEDs. I will be challenged by trying to decide what
will be most effective in replacing the existing lights and how to attain the materials needed for
the project. I plan to use James Rorrer of Rockingham County Schools Maintenance
Department as my expert for the project because he has experience maintaining the
conventional light fixtures in the school and he also has experience in retrofitting these fixtures
with LEDs. I will also solicit the services of Robert Kime, PE with R.L. Vanstory to assist in
lighting selection and technical support.

Plagiarism is a serious offense that is the stealing of someone else’s hard work. By plagiarizing
someone else’s work, one loses their credibility because their information is not valid because it
is not cited and a source cannot be verified. Being ethical is what all of life is about. Someone
that has no ethics or morals cannot be trusted and would have trouble in life to create bonds
and have an employer that is supportive of them.
