Safety regulations for UNM

Students at UNM feel relatively safe on campus, but there is room for improvements. The
analysis of the survey shows that although most students feel safe, the crime rate is high, and
most students would not know what to do in the case of an emergency. Many students are very
unfamiliar with safety procedures with only 1 saying they know it very well. When asked how
campus safety can be improved, 10 out of 18 students said either more police presence or
security cameras. For most students, the crime rate on campus is high. These results could be
influenced by the recent LoboAlert about the man with a gun near the duck pond. As a follow-up
to that incident, the president sent an email to the students explaining how the staff and police
officers handled the situation and what improvements will be made including making sure any
specific actions students should take in the LoboAlert messages. Given more time I think we
could increase the amount we survey to get a more accurate result and add more questions like
“do you know the number for the UNMPD?”, “What would be a good way to inform students of
what to do in an emergency?”, or “do you think the blue emergency stations around campus are
effective?”
