Men rescued after getting
bad GPS info on way to Yellowstone
CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Two men drove around at least two
road-closed signs due to faulty navigation device informa-
tion while trying to get to Yellowstone National Park and
had to be rescued from deep snow, sheriff’s officers in
Wyoming said Thursday.
Park County authorities said 60-year-old John Ray
Elmore Jr. of Los Angeles and his father, 85-year-old John
M. Elmore Sr. of Nashville, Indiana, likely won’t be cited
for using the road northwest of Cody.
The road has been closed and unplowed since fall. Snow
still covers much of the route, but the men said their navi-
gation device showed it was open.
Their Nissan SUV got stuck Tuesday about a mile from the
last road-closed sign. The men called for help on a cell-
phone. Rescuers got them out with help from a resident
with a pickup truck.
Many roads in and around Yellowstone National Park
remain covered with snow and unpassable. In Wyoming,
driving around a road-closed sign is a big no-no, possibly
punishable by a $420 fine.

Police: One man kills
another, surrenders at Nashville mall
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — One young man ended a fight with
another by fatally shooting him Thursday inside a shopping
mall before surrendering his weapon, saying he didn’t want
any more trouble, police said.
Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron said the shooter
put the gun on the counter of a ticket booth across from the
Opry Mills Mall, and was ordered to lie on the ground by a
retired California police officer who now lives in Tennessee.
Police identified the victim as Demarco Churchwell and
the suspected shooter as Justin Golson, both 22 years old. It
is not clear if Golson will face charges or if he has a lawyer.
He was in police custody and being interviewed by investi-
gators Thursday evening.
The gunfire prompted an outsized response. The mall was
evacuated, police officers responded in force, at least a half a
dozen ambulances converged on the scene and authorities
said the adjacent Grand Ole Opry House and convention cen-
ter were put on lockdown for a time.
The shooting couldn’t be heard over the battle scenes in a
showing of “Avengers: Infinity War,” which was disrupted
when officers in riot gear came into the theater and told
everyone to leave.
