3.0 Introduction

3.1. Background

Does violence on television have any impact on our community? Virtually since the dawn of

television, parents and teachers have wanted to understand the impact of television programs,

particularly on our community. Of special concern has been the portrayal of violence,

particularly given by psychologist Albert Bandura's work. (1970). Nowadays, there are

different kinds of television channels. For example, satellite, cable TV and internet airing

programs for people to watch. Some of these programs are violent which requires parental

guidance. At present, we watch many television programs that affect individual and the

community as well as the tradition. Most of these programs affect the way people imitation

dressing and performance. The negative part may be unintentional and inappropriate for the

viewers, and positive programs aimed at our community. The impact of television violence

programs leads to the formation of aggressive behavior in our society. Television combines

voice, image and movement, and it invades and affects our communities negatively and

positively in terms of behaviors and many more.

3.2. Purpose of Study

The purpose of choosing this topic is that there are many violent issue happening in our

communities in which the authorities are finding very difficult to find solutions to it. This

project work seeks to bring out some of these solutions to help reduce the impact of violent

television programs on our community.

3.3 Objectives

3.3.2. To outline some causes and consequences of this phenomenon

3.3.3. To bring out the argument whether this phenomenon is either increasing or decreasing.

3.3.4. To suggest solutions to this phenomenon

4.1 Literature Review

Some violent TV programs

She said in one of her articles about: violent TV programs. Studies show that violence on

television does have an adverse effect on children and the way they think and act. This is true

not only for young children, but some recent studies indicate that watching violence on

television can even impact adults.

Some causes of violent TV programs

She said about the causes of violent TV programs. We know that most often, children learn

from both experience and social learning or role modeling. So, when children, especially young

children, see violence on television, they have difficulty distinguishing between what is real or

what they think, and tend to emulate or copy what they see. Moreover, there is a chemical

change in the brain, similar to what is seen in post-traumatic stress disorder. If there is enough

violence to be seen, the brain reacts as if the person who is viewing has already been abused.

This is especially true if violence is unilateral, as in the case of sadistic violence. Now add to

this the fact that children who watch violence on TV have brains still evolving, and you can see

how dangerous it can be to watch TV really.

Arguments about the effects of violent TV programs.

She said about the effects of violent TV programs. People who see a lot of violence on

television are more likely to be dialectic, because they have been fueled with slow caution of

inhibitors. These people are more likely to be class bully. Because they appear less patient than

their peers, studies show that children who watch a lot of violence on television seem unwilling

to cooperate and delay saturation. Therefore, it appears to show a strong sense of merit. In

addition, there are other potential dangers to watching violent television. One of the most

4
troubling concerns is that young children become more violent themselves, such as

adolescents, and tend to have more encounters with the law as adults.

Some suggested to solution to the phenomenon.

She said about the solution to the phenomenon. What can parents do about it? Parents have a

number of remedies at their disposal and they include:

1. Parents have the power to moderate their children’s TV viewing. Parents are entitled to

parent and that includes checking in every once and a while to monitor what their children are

actually watching on TV.

2. Parents can and should establish house rules for TV viewing. This means how many hours a

week, where TV is to be watched, as well as what kind of programming.

3. Parents should supervise their children’s TV viewing by watching at least one episode of

whatever their children’s selections are so that the parents decide if the programming is

appropriate.

4. Parents should monitor news programs. Repetitive violence in the news is very disturbing to

a young mind. Such violent overload can be directly linked to changes in the brain similar to

that seen in abuse. In fact, these changes can actually be viewed on an MRI.

5 .Parents should view current events on television with their children so that they can explain

any confusing or inappropriate material to their children.

6. Just say “no” to offensive programming. That is what it is to be a parent.

7. Encourage your children to spend their free time in ways other than TV watching, such as

reading a good book during the week and watching TV only on the weekends; outdoor sports;

arts and crafts; journal writing and playdates with peers can alter, and even break, the hypnotic

TV habit.

8. Boundaries are important to you and your children. Set them by creating new models for

family time that are interactive rather than passive.

9. Show your children the inspirational part of TV, such as the Discovery Channel, the History

Channel, Biography, and Nova.

5
10 .Finally, parents must be what they want to see. Modeling is an essential part of parenting,

and since we know that violence on TV negatively affects adults as well, lead your family to

healthier viewing and happier living together.

4.2 Methodology

4.2.1 Data Collection Method

I am going to use questionnaire methods for my project to collect many things such as, reasons

and information, it's from many people for a short time. Also it's easy and practical. I choose

the questionnaires to give the responders the freedom to say what in their mind without fell shy

to replay as in doing interview they will not give the right answer to your data.

4.2.2 Questionnaire design

My questionnaire had four section with very important questions for the respondents to answer.

The first section was the personal information section I asked about gender (male and female),

and the different age group and educational status I didn't ask about your name because it's not

important. The second section was yes\ no questions, there were four questions. I choose this

type because the people who answer this questions don't find difficult answer. The third section

was multiple choice, there were four questions. In last section was WH type, there were three

questions. In type I found new idea and more information also perfect resolution for my

research.

4.2.3 Sampling

My sample included 10 people. There people included 5 for student in my class and 5 for my

family and friends. The questionnaire that l distributed to student, 5 questions were simplified

and the other 5 questions difficult questions. The questionnaire was distributed. To both male

and female in the class and other place. I chose this simple because they were different idea

different opinion.

4.3 Anticipated Problems

I had some problems while collected the data for my project:

1. First problem is difficulty in giving the interview and questionnaire for students because of

lack of time.

2.The second problem is not all people knew the English language, so I had to translate

questions in Arabic.

7
3. Finally, the students weren't interesting to make interviews and do the questionnaires.

4.3.1 Proposed solution

I had some solution while collected the data for my project:

1. Even with the lack of time I still give it to them.

2. Translate questions in Arabic.

3. Clarify to students that this subject is very important and needs their views.

4.4 Data Interpretation and Analysis

Question 1

How can we deal with the issue of violent TV programs?

In this question, I was trying to identify of the how we can deal with the issue of violent TV

programs. And through that question, I got different opinions, one of those opinions is to away

with the programs, create awareness and guidance from our parents to control what we watch

on TV.

Question 2

Does violence on TV have an impact on society?

8
In this question, I was trying to find out the ratio of violence on TV programs that have an

impact on society. The graph below shows the different responses from the people I asked.

It was very clear form the graph that violence on TV have an impact on society. 90% of the

respondents said that they agree with the view that violence on TV have an impact on society.

Only 10% of the respondents disagree. They said violence on TV have an impact on society.

Question 3

Do you think most of TV programs have violent contents?

9
In this question, I was trying to find out which TV programs have violent contents. Out of 10

respondents, 6 said TV shows contain violent content because most programs that we watch

have some violent effects and this increases as followers. There are a few who said that the TV

shows do not contain any violent contents. This is because they support their vision or

knowledge of all television programs.
