Ms. Norris’s Mathematics Classroom Norms

Every student can master mathematics objectives to the greatest level.

This is more than a belief, I know ever student in this room can master the highest level of mathematics
offered in this school. Mathematics is an approachable subject to all and I will do my best to make it
approachable to all my students. To obtain this norm, I ask all my students to have an open growth
mindset in my classroom.

There is beauty in the struggle, mistakes are a necessary part of the learning process.
To learn mathematics students must make mistakes. When students make mistakes their brains grow,
and I will value all these mistakes. To obtain this norm, I ask that my students explore mathematics in a
way that allows and celebrates mistakes.

Have patience, we are all people first.

For there to be a safe learning environment we all must have patience with one another. I want every
student to feel like they matter, and they are safe. To obtain this norm, I expect every student to treat
one another with respect and patience.

Be a skeptic, investigate to make sense of mathematics.

In this classroom I want every student to be creative and curious. I expect students to challenge
mathematics ideas and investigate them until they feel confident they understand the meaning and
answers.

Communication is key to a healthy environment.

Good communication skills are something every person needs during every stage of their life. I expect
students to practice these communication skills and improve upon them throughout the course. My
classroom will always have an open-door policy, please speak with me whenever you need/want. To
obtain a healthy learning environment we all must learn to express our thoughts and feelings in a safe,
healthy, and appropriate way.

Late/Missing Work

Students may submit late work at any time, the amount of credit given will depend on how late the
assignment is turned in. The minimum amount of credit given will be 50%. I encourage all students to
complete their late work for partial credit and practice of their mathematics skills.

Academic Dishonesty

Cheating is not allowed and will not be tolerated. If a student is suspected of cheating their test will be
throw out immediately and they will be forced to make the test up after school by appointment or on a
Tuesday. Further action may be taken by administration.

Consequences

As stated in the above norms, I want to create a safe and successful learning environment. If any student
is inhibiting on another’s potential to succeed there will be consequences. First, I will remind a student
to behave as expected. If my first action does not improve the students’ behavior, we will have an after-
class discussion about the persisting inappropriate behavior. Third, I will contact the student’s parents
about the behavior(s) or they will be referred to the dean’s office if the behavior is severe.

WCPSS Policies

This class will follow all WCPSS’s policies, please refer to your handbook or their website for further
information about those policies.

Thank you for reading my syllabus, I greatly look forward to spending this semester with you all!
