Schools
hit the

AFTER months
of tinkering and
training, hundreds
of school students
from across Bendigo
got the chance to
hit the streets on
Saturday with their
human-powered
vehicles. They flew
through parts of the
Golden Square circuit
at high speed during
the nine-hour race –
and there was a fair
share of bumps and
spills along the way.

Getting to a competitive level a costly business for schools
WHILE some schools in Ben-

are only just getting started.

School Noticeboard
VR4212389
When you would normally walk into a primary school, you’d expect to see a playground, basketball courts, bubble taps
and maybe even a soccer field or garden. At Camp Hill Primary School the story is different, we have a unique play-
space that is known by teachers and students as the Cubby Corner. The Cubby Corner is a perfect place for students to
interact with different age groups and express their creativity in the things they make and build. Students use gumnuts
as currency to bargain and trade for resources in order to design their very own cubby. On the rare occasions, there are
incidents of theft, but they are dealt with quickly and with maturity in an understanding manner from students, which
helps students learn the key area of problem solving.
Thanks to a generous parent donation and through the Big Give Campaign held in 2016, we now have a sustainable water
tank for students to use in general activities such as making ochre which is used as a natural paint. Our school also held
fundraisers such as a casual clothes day where students could wear casual clothes to school as long as they brought a
gold coin donation. The proceeds were added with the campaign funds to cover the costs of the tank installation.
We asked four students how they feel about having such a unique play space in their school.
Jimmy, age 10: “I feel good because we are the only school that has the Cubby Corner and I like how you get to make your
own huts out of different materials and design it yourself”.
VR4133118
Cullum, Age 9: “I like to build and create, also hang out with friends; I think it is amazing to be privileged with the
Cubby Corner”.
Eleanor, Age 8: “I like to make dust paint and slime, it is really good to have a Cubby Corner but sometimes other people
do steal from people’s shops”
Aaliyah, age 5: “I love making mud cupcakes, we are very lucky to be the only school with the Cubby Corner, and I really
like playing with my friends there”
Mrs Leonie Roberts, the principal of Camp Hill P.S commented, “We created the Cubby Corner as a space where students
can play in a creative, unstructured but safe manner, allowing students to build cubbies, and use gumnuts as a currency
for trading desired items such as, wood, crates, turf and sheets; all-important learning skills for students to experience
and learn. It’s also showing students that you can have a terrific time playing with items that many people would have
usually been thrown away”.
We hope our school has inspired others to create a play-space which supports children to play in a way that expresses
their imagination.
