INTRODUCTION
1.1. Rationale
Part-time jobs are often tough, hard-earned money can be painful to be part with.
According to the statistics of the student union, more than 80% of Vietnamese students
have at least one part-time job while attending university. There is a plenty of different
kinds of part-time jobs include jobs in the fast food or restaurant industry, jobs as
waiter/receptionist, staffing agencies, teaching assistant, etc. Like many university
students, HUFLIT IBA seniors take on a part-time job during the senior year of
university as the desire for independence. Particularly, their decision to work not simply
for financial reason to contribute to family expense that they more likely to be happy with
the money they got, with many aspects of their lives, their work. HUFLIT IBA seniors
who earn their own money tend to spend it wisely. Moreover, they believed that the early
valuable experience gained through the part-time jobs would help them obtain advantage
employment prospects and develop skills in the future than those who did not have part-
time jobs. In general, the part-time job brings many advantages and reinforces what
students are learning in university.
1.2. Objectives
Besides the obvious advantages of going to work, HUFLIT IBA seniors face many other
difficulties as well. These are direct impacts on students include lacking of time to study,
being stressful, no job security and insurance benefit, less chance of receiving promotion,
not having time for relations. The converse theorem of students "work ahead, study later"
seems unreasonable, but when part-time job has caused students cannot attend classes
because of too many debts or excessive absenteeism, and then must consider this
theorem. Students are more attracted to the jobs than learning. Students have been swept
into the spinning wheel of making money. The higher the work intensity, the lower the
quality of learning, the learning becomes secondary when the demand for money is too
large. Another problem is that the intensity of work is inversely proportional to student
health. The more students work, their healthy is more likely leads to get worse, going to
work and therefore they often skip meals. Consequently, they do not ensure their health
condition while going to the lecture hall. This scientific research will point out how those
aspects affect HUFLIT IBA seniors and the solutions. What is more, an interpretation of
the facts indicates that HUFLIT IBA seniors love to work in active, friendly, creative,
wild, challenge working environments. As a result, this paper will look for categorizing
some companies providing useful part-time jobs for HUFLIT IBA seniors, appropriate
for their majors.
1.3. Scope
This scientific research will concentrate on analyzing the difficulties of part-time jobs
while attending university of HUFLIT IBA seniors, then giving some solutions for each
difficulty. After that is a list of ten companies which provide part-time jobs and
internships suitable for HUFLIT IBA seniors’ major. The limit of the number of
respondents are 300 HUFLIT IBA seniors and the place to conduct the survey is HUFLIT
IBA at 302 Cao Thang Street, Ward 12, District 10, Ho Chi Minh City.
1.4. Structure
This scientific research is divided into five main parts. First of all, it is the introduction of
the research. Next, literature review will bring a look back of previous studies concerning
with the difficulties of part-time jobs and solutions. Part three concludes the overview
about part-time jobs. After that, this research will have analysis of actual situations of
HUFLIT IBA seniors when having a part-time job based on data from the survey. Lately,
from the information analyzed in part three, the research authors will address the issues
existing and some recommendations for HUFLIT IBA seniors.
LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1. Concepts
2.1.1. Part-time job
According to Alison Doyle (2017), it is not necessary to set up the number of weekly
working hours for part-time workers that are considered temporary workers compared to
permanent workers, which called the scheduled of part-time jobs. Moreover, the job
positions will be depended on the decision of part-time workers.
A part-time jobs will be one of the best decisions to improve the personality and develop
the position in the future job, which will teach us about the teamwork responsibility, time
management and so on (Greenberger Steinberg, 2010)
Part-time jobs are the best option and wonderful experience for university students. On
the other hand, an excessive workload will bring the negative effect not only on the
study’s performance but also the relationships and physically. In the research of Lyn
Robinson in Australian Council for Educational Research, Lyn Robinson was found the
negative effects from having part-time jobs (Robinson Lyn, “The effects of part-time
work on school students”, 2010)
Alice Rolfe (2010) reported that the UK students believe working part-time jobs
sometimes lead them in trouble to finding time to study and distraction. They are being
exhausted and tired of running between the workplace and the course. Furthermore, they
are going to skipped classes to have a sleep after a long day of hard-working. The lacking
of time for preparing the new lessons before the classes during the semester is nearly
impossible to complete the tasks and may discourage them from coming to university.
The homework can be overloaded. Moreover, they are stressed with many difficult
aspects of their life. The balancing between work and study is too much for them. As a
result, the decrease and drop in their GPA will happen.
Research done by Scravani (2015) on the Content.wise step website, many companies
prefer hiring part-time workers because the part-timers are not provided the
compensations such as sick leave, annual leave, vacation, health insurance and medical
treatment which are cost too much.
A number of researchers, for example, Polina Pollykorotkykh found that the working
hours of the part-time worker as per their own free and convenient time, but they rarely
concentrate to other important areas of their lives. Particularly, they may not take time for
family and friends or chat with them and spend the free time to enjoy personal hobbies
instead of working (Advantages and Disadvantages of part-time jobs for students, 2012).
Patrick Brown (2014) also stated “The university students will have their own decision
and the right to determine that which position they will to apply for and environment of
part-time jobs they would like to work at. They will decide the part-time environments
jobs which are involved to their main major in university or not.”
The findings of the essay “The impact of having part-time jobs on students learning
results in Can Tho University” published in the Can Tho University Journal of Science
on August 14th, 2014 of authors Nguyen Pham Tuyet Anh, Chau Thi Le Duyen, Hoang
Minh Tri showed that the students’ learning results represented by grade point average
(GPA) were different in these two groups of students. Moreover, the study also found
that there was a difference in terms of GPA of students having part-time jobs before and
after getting the jobs. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that there is an impact
of having part-time jobs on students’ learning outcomes. The research also found out
specific factors that negatively influenced the students’ learning results and that led to the
decrease of the GPA of students with part-time jobs. From the research findings, the
researchers propose solutions and recommendations to help students having part-time
jobs improve their GPA and learning outcomes.
From analyzes and evaluations in the research “Students and part-time jobs, reality and
solutions” (2015), the author Nguyen Thi Cam Tu might draw out the positive as well as
the negative that the part-time job brings to the students. There were some positive sides,
include making extra income, improving living experience and work experience,
improving communication skills, mature style, helping students to limit their time, having
new relationship, applying knowledge into practice. On the other hand, there were some
negative sides, include not enough time for learning; affecting health, encountering trick.
From the positive and negative aspects that part-time jobs bring to students as well as
from the trend forecasting in the coming time, the readers can see that in order to
encourage and manage the problem of part-time jobs for students, the school, society,
business and organizations should enter. The problem of part-time jobs for students
nowadays from the perspective of insiders has been widely supported and agreed. The
majority of students think that part-time job has many positive impacts. Most students are
keen on getting a chance to get a job because they think that when they go to work, they
can feel the value of themselves, develop and apply available knowledge. Students
receive money and achievement from their effort. From then on, they will have better
ways of looking at the true value of life. The results of the study, however, also showed
that there are not a small number of students who are unable to work because of reasons
that can easily be overcome.
In May 2010, the essay “Students and part-time jobs” which was written by Phan Thanh
Liem, Trinh Thi My Linh, Pham Thi Quyen, Nguyen Duy Khuong, Tran Minh Hoang,
Mai Hoang Loc, Phan Le Trung, Tran Huu Hong, Pham Thi Sang, Nguyen Dinh Khoi
showed the purpose and the reality of the student's part-time jobs, examined the part-time
jobs that students do and the problems of students with part-time jobs. From there, the
study gave students some reliable job sites in Ho Chi Minh City. Furthermore, in the
extension, the essay also shared some useful experiences for students when looking for
part-time jobs such as: what major you study, search the website of the companies,
organizations that are concerned because they are often update recruiting information that
somehow you can find good opportunities; organizing a club for community with friends;
participating in contests is also a way for you to introduce yourself to recruiters; joining
forums, and human resources clubs of universities.
2.3. Suggestions
According to the essay "The impact of having part-time jobs on students’ learning results
in Can Tho University", the authors listed various suggestions to help students balance
between their study and part-time job. More time for self-study, especially for male
students, is due to the fact that male students spend less time and focus on learning than
female students. In addition, it is necessary to arrange self-study time that is reasonably
balanced with other activities such as recreation and extra work. Moreover, students must
minimize the time to drop out of school. Students need to attend class regularly and pay
attention to lectures to be able to absorb the maximum information and knowledge that
lecturers provide. Students also need to actively learn and practice, improve their
professional knowledge, as well as the skills and knowledge needed for further study
and work.
In the essay "Students and part-time jobs, reality and solutions", the author offered
solutions for two specific subjects, the school and the student. All colleges and
universities in our country now have more supportive measures. However, the support is
too small, but the number of students is quite large. It is evident that with the increase in
tuition fees at a reasonable level, the education and training sector needs to take into
account the adjustment of student support policies in favor of poor students and priorities
in general and special scholarships for students with excellent academic performance. For
students, they need a reasonable schedule. If they can balance between going to school
and work, the time arrangement is not too difficult. On the other hand, students need to
make the effort when applying to work to ensure good health and complete their study.
The most important solution is the academic effort to get scholarships supported
by universities.
Through the essay “Students and part-time jobs”, the authors said that finding a part-time
job is quite positive for students because anyone can recognize the good influences of
this, especially for the students in the difficult condition. However, students need to keep
in mind that their main job is still learning. Part-time job that is just one of the conditions
to get closer to students’ future does not help them reach the goal that they want to
achieve. Only studying in the lecture hall and the diploma are the best preparations for
students. In addition, students have to arrange a reasonable time, although it is not easy. It
is difficult to reconcile both work and study, but students must prioritize their study and
rest periods in their timetable. Students should also stop working when the exam is
coming because they should consider between the works which are not their career with a
salary of several hundred thousand VND and the exams that have direct impact to
their future.
2.4. Overview
Part-time jobs are often tough and hard-earned money and there are some good and bad
views about having part-time jobs while attending school. Furthermore, also according to
Aurelio Locsin, university students think that they can have the income when getting
part-time jobs. By contrast, when they are not working, they earn no income
and experience.
According to Jobstreet, which is the biggest website provides available jobs; there were
many companies offering part-time jobs in Vietnam such as KFC, Lotteria, BHD Star
Cineplex, CJ CGV and so on.
2.4.2. Seven awesome companies outside Vietnam that offer health insurance for
part-time workers
Kat Tretina (2016) stated that “During the period of Trumps stepping into the office, you
can rest easier knowing that there are many retailers and companies that offer health
insurance for part-time workers. If you’re worried about your health insurance access or
rising premium costs, getting a part-time job with a retailer that offers coverage to its
workers may be a good option for you. Not only will you get much-needed medical
coverage, but you will also earn extra income to help build up your savings or pay down
debt faster.” Kat Tretnia listed the following company such as Costco, Lowe’s, Caribou
Coffee, REI, Starbucks, UPS and Whole Foods.

Part-time employment of HUFLIT IBA seniors in the education sector accounted for
about a quarter. This was the second highest percentage of students to choose from
because it helps students to develop their language skills (especially English skill) in their
teaching assistant positions at foreign language centers.
The ratios of 18.1% and 11.2% were appropriate to hospitality and other areas. These
were the two options that were least chosen because they may not be relevant to HUFLIT
IBA seniors' majors or may require high qualifications.
According to the survey, more than half of students who are working part-time did not
consider the current jobs will become their major occupations in the future. The main
reason (64.9%) was that the current job does not match the specialty they are studying.

were interested in the active and friendly working environments, there were two more
options including the solemn and competitive working environments. Particularly, there
were 208 students (approximately 69.3%) selected to work in the active working
environment with the fresh young people that may help them feel free to express their
confidence to complete the tasks and also find the comfort and responsibility on duty.

networks, job fair, relatives, acquaintances and friends recommendations. It is easy to see
that job fair; an event in which employers, recruiters, and schools give information to
potential students is not the priority of students (22%). In contrast, similar percentage of
students (59.7%) chose relatives, friends and job search sites as channels provide jobs
compatible with their majors; they are also the two most popular and reliable channels in
which students find part-time jobs. However, the number of students look for job via

The chart illustrates necessary things HUFLIT IBA seniors do to work at their
relationships if they are working while going to school. Overall, almost HUFLIT IBA
seniors reported that they would build up more relationships in work and study. In
addition, there were two more answers include taking part in family and friends
gatherings. In particular, there are 191 respondents (approximately 63.7%) informed that
they would create new relationships in working and university environment. The second
most popular solution was participating in family and friends’ meetings with the number
of 154 students picked this. Keeping up with friends and relatives was selected by 136
students; for example, making phone call, video calls, video-messaging, etc.
Figure 17. Solutions for balancing work and study from having part-time jobs
The chart shows the selection of HUFLIT IBA seniors to the ways that balance between
work and study from having a part-time jobs. Overall, almost HUFLIT IBA seniors
reported that they are looking for a job with the flexible working schedule. Evident in the
chart here, the majority of 217 students filling out survey forms are they looking for jobs
that have flexibility in working schedule (approximately 72%). It can be a logical choice
to increase the efficiency in work, to save the fee of transportation that the company of
the part-time workers will evaluate them through the efficiency and the final result in
work instead of the working hours in the company. Moreover, the HUFLIT IBA seniors
have to face and deal with some family problems or the random test in school that they
can’t predict about in sometime, so the flexible working schedule is always the best
option. In contrast, the small choice of 124 students was using up the free time to study
(approximately 41.3%). That is always a great method to do and fight for their goal of
life, minimize the negative thinking to save the time. Finally, the importance of weekly
planning was chosen by 122 respondents of HUFLIT IBA seniors (approximately
40.7%), which is essential to set up enough time to work while still studying in school.
To do list is the list of things they have to write down and complete the task. Next step
they need to decide which are the most important things or study they need to focus on.
Moreover, the long-term objective or plan will remind them to use the time under their
good control.
The graph responds to questions about the ways to use time effectively of HUFLIT IBA
seniors from having a part-time job. Overall, many of HUFLIT IBA seniors do in fact
perceived that they chose the workplace near school. In addition, there were two more
answers consist of reducing a wasting time in bad habits and the fit of working and
studying rooster. In particularly, 195 students most frequently reported that the top choice
is the location of their workplace is not far from school (approximately 65%). Their
choice will be the best plan to save time of moving and lead to decrease the heavy traffic
jam which is one of the huge problems in social aspects. Other common ways to solve
that problem include reducing and breaking a wasting time for suffering on the internet,
Facebook and reading the gossip online newspaper was the second best choice with the
number of 125 respondents of HUFLIT IBA seniors (approximately 41.7%), and the
working rooster fit their studying schedules (approximately 41%). There are some
advantages of reducing the wasting time that are the best achievement in the final
examination result, the experience in the life objectives. The overload suffering on the
Internet was addicted to social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
Therefore, the students try to reduce to wasting time and breaking those bad habits and
replace it with a good one such as reading books, making new friends and building good
relationships in workplace, communicating with the professor. Moreover, arranging and
maintaining to attend the class after five or six working hours that were selected by 123
students (approximately 41%). That solution requires the strong effort to develop the
managing the timetable skill with the good purpose that shows how to use the time
effectively, what the priority on their success in study while going to work is. It could
seem appropriate to state that people who can balance between working and studying
were well-planned people and could be satisfied in many aspects of their lives.
Figure 19. The ways to reduce stress from having part-time jobs
while attending universities
This graph illustrates solutions to minimize stress when HUFLIT IBA seniors have part-
time job. Overall, a majority of respondents of HUFLIT IBA seniors reported that they
spent their time on their personal activities and their hobbies, there are two more
solutions include doing exercises and joining the outside activities. Particularly, there
were 229 students (approximately 76.3%) chose enjoying personal hobbies as the answer
to the problem of stress. In addition, the option of doing gymnastic and exercises took
40.3% with 121 students; it includes healthy activities such as swimming, playing tennis,
running, etc. Taking part in outside class activities was also a solution to get out of stress;
a quarter of students selected this.
CONCLUSION
The searching of the negative effects of part-time jobs on HUFLIT IBA seniors has a
variety of lesson learned, which has shown that the difficulties of HUFLIT IBA seniors
from having part-time jobs are specific. Additionally, these consequences of part-time
jobs mentioned through the scientific research that may outweigh the positive effects of
part-time jobs. Actually, becoming part-timers is the hardest decision that students have
to make; while some of the HUFLIT IBA seniors dedicated to sleep or hang out with
friends in their free time after school as the part-time jobs are simply a desire, but for
others they decided to spend eight hours in part-time jobs and it is a necessity.
First of all, the results represented that most of participants had worked as part-time
workers. There were 90 selections of working environment in the Food and Beverage
industry. Additionally, there were 122 respondents of not relating to the major in school
as the reasons for considering the part-time jobs will not be their future jobs. Two other
reasons included low salary and less of chance for promotion. Besides that, 146 surveyed
students chose stress problem that was one of the difficulties from having part-time jobs.
As the reason for getting part-time jobs, most of 208 participants wanted to work in the
active working environment.
The study provided some recommendations based on collected data. It is important for
HUFLIT IBA seniors to consider on the flexible working schedule and the balance
between work and study once jobs begin. However, gaining the experiences, skills and
knowledge from part-time works will help DIBA seniors to get jobs later while the labor
market is developing. This scientific research suggested ten reliable companies that
provide the part-time jobs and also offer the intern programs which are related to the
majors of HUFLIT IBA seniors.
By conducting online surveys, the result represents the HUFLIT IBA seniors’ difficulties
from having part-time jobs while attending university. However, due to time limitation,
the solutions offered are not thorough. Further studies are necessary to find out the
specific solutions for students to minimize negative effects from having part-time jobs
and guide them in the right way for their future jobs.

PROPOSAL
Part-time jobs are the best option and wonderful experience for university students.
There are a plenty of different kinds of part-time jobs include: jobs in the fast food or
restaurant industry, jobs as waiter/receptionist, staffing agencies, teaching assistant, etc.
Like many university students, HUFLIT IBA seniors having a part-time job during the
senior year of university as the desire for independence. Moreover, HUFLIT IBA seniors
who earn their own money tend to spend it wisely.
However, when they are not working, they earn no income and experience. Part-time jobs
are often tough, hard-earned money can be painful to be part with which has two sides, so
here are some of the most common negative effects of HUFLIT IBA seniors from having
a part-time job
The senior year of HUFLIT IBA can be extremely a challenge and stressful stage. There
are just so many things to complete and HUFLIT IBA senior do not have enough time for
them.
The HUFLIT IBA seniors are in trouble to finding time to study which can lead to the
distraction. They are being exhausted and tired of running between the working place and
the course in HUFLIT IBA. Furthermore, HUFLIT IBA seniors are going to skipped
classes to have a sleep after a long day of hard working. The lacking of time for
preparing the new lesson before class during the semester is nearly impossible to
complete the tasks and may discourage HUFLIT IBA seniors from coming to university.
The homework can be overloaded. Moreover, they are stressed with many difficult
aspects of their lives. The balancing between work and study is too much for HUFLIT
IBA seniors. As a result, the decrease and drop in their GPAs will happen.
The time management
Have you ever asked yourself like: “How can you get a part-time job if you do not know
about what the schedule is going to be’’. The schedule of studying is different each week
and semester that HUFLIT IBA senior has to select new classes; therefore, it is difficult
to getting a part-time job while attending in university
Many companies prefer hiring part-time workers because the part-timer jobs are not
provided the compensations such as sick leave, annual leave, vacation, health insurance
or medical treatment which cost so much.
The working hours of HUFLIT IBA seniors as per their own free and convenient time but
HUFLIT IBA seniors rarely concentrate to other important areas of their life.
