Beam (structure)
A beam A beam, in Structural Engineering terms, is a member that can be comprised of a
number of materials.

there are many type of beams we will take about them

Classification of beams is basically based on:-

1. Classification of beams based on supports

2. Classification of beams based on geometry
3. Classification of beams based on the shape of cross section
4. Classification of beams based on equilibrium conditions
5. Classification of beams based on material

Background
In the past , beams were made of stone or wood but now ,they made of metal to carry heavy
load .

Beams can carry vertical forces but are primarily used to carry horizontal loads

aims of beams:
Beams are employed extensively in building construction and in machines. In building, any
beam built into a wall and with the free end projecting forms a cantilever. Longer cantilevers are
incorporated in a building when clear space is required below, with the cantilevers carrying a
gallery, roof, canopy, runway for an overhead travelling crane, or part of a building above.

Classification based on supports

In engineering, beams are of several types:

1. Simply supported – a beam supported on the ends which are free to rotate and have no
moment resistance.
2. Fixed – a beam supported on both ends and restrained from rotation.
3. Over hanging – a simple beam extending beyond its support on one end.
Simply Supported beam :- a beam supported on the ends which are free to
rotate and have no moment of resistance

 Fixed beam:- a beam supported on both ends and restrained from

rotation.

Overhanging beam :- a simple beam extending beyond its support on one
