The old adage about beauty being
only skin deep couldn’t hold more
truth when it comes to lowriding and
classic cars. Many of us tend to focus
on the exterior (which shouldn’t come
as a surprise) and as the money gets
poured into the bodywork, followed
by the candy paints, flakes, and
pinstriping, we re-up on yet another
budget just to drop it all on the interior
of our dreams, followed by yet another
one with more budget that’s set aside
for the very necessary chrome and
suspension work. By the time the car
is done, we’re ready for our maiden
voyage and soon your huge smile and
joy is quickly replaced with worry and
anxiety as we fire it up. We wonder if
it’ll be reliable enough, pray that we
won’t have any hiccups, and this is
where we enter yet another chapter of
our lowriding experience.
You see, many of the engines that
power our classics are over 50 years
old. They need plenty of TLC and as
we go through a laundry list of the
upgrades we need, the first thing many
lowriders contemplate is pulling the
original engine out and swapping it
with a much larger engine or a more
modern motor. It’s a tough decision for
any car owner to do and in this annual
December LS issue, we’ll be taking a
look at lowriders fully equipped with
LS drivetrains while discussing the
pros (and a few cons) when it comes
to repowering a classic lowrider.
The beauty of a larger motor is
the fact that it’s a major upgrade
that does nothing to hinder the
look of the vehicle. With the hood
closed no one would know that
an LS3 has nestled its way into the
engine compartment of let’s just
say a ’62 Impala, and at the turn of
a key we know it’s going to fire up
and we’ve essentially converted a
once market-friendly grocery getter
into an absolutely reliable beast of a
machine.
While I consider myself a purist and
appreciate an automobile in factory-
original condition, it should come as
no surprise that I also enjoy a ride with
full amenities. Look, after decades in
the game, I’ll trade in a manual crank
for power windows, and while you’re at
it, I can attest to the luxuries of having
power seats, an electric moonroof, and
anything else you could throw in to
make my time cruising that much more
pleasurable. But imagine having all
those creature comforts just to have the
interior cabin of your lowrider getting
taken over by the odor of old oil and
crud being burnt from the motor that’s
been rebuilt a few times and sealed up
with a catalog of parts from Mr. Gasket?
It’s not a good thing and far too many
of us know the feeling of being on the
third lane of the highway and feeling
your motor straining, all the while
praying that it lives for just another
day—let alone another hour. It’s during
these times we contemplate even harder
about the motor swap, and it’s with good
reason—especially once you’ve been in a
car with a properly done swap.
Obviously the benefits of installing
an engine manufactured in this
decade are numerous. On the ignition
side of the equation, we get rid of
the old-fashioned distributor. This
means no more cap and rotor or
points and condensers to deal with.
Instead we now have individual coil
packs controlled by a DIS (Direct
Ignition System). Not only is the DIS
system virtually maintenance-free,
but it also provides a hotter spark
that supports complete combustion.
The modernized ignition system
also allows us to use platinum spark
plugs. This moves the spark plug
maintenance schedule from three
years or 30,000 miles, to roughly 10
years or 100,000 miles—basically
a lifetime on any lowrider. On the
fuel system side, we eliminate the
mechanical-style fuel pump that puts

out a miserable 6 psi of fuel pressure
and in addition this upgrade removes
all the carburetor problems from our
classic car. The modern-style electric
pump pressurizes the fuel rail up to
60 psi. At the end of the rail we'll now
have modern-style fuel injectors. And
just like the ignition system we reap
the benefits of modern technology.
Higher fuel pressure utilizing
individual injectors provides increased
control and better atomization of
the fuel charge. In return we receive
increased power output, lower tailpipe
emissions, and a boost in fuel economy
at the same time. When installing
an LS engine and a compatible 4L65
transmission, the value of your ride
increases about 25 percent.
In short, the positives are numerous
and the biggest problem to date
seems to be with vehicle value. Many
believe that a motor swap removes all
measurable value from the automobile
but again that’s to be left up for
discussion as you have to consider the
vehicle you’re working with as well as
the year/make/model of the vehicle you
plan to alter. A classic car in factory
condition with low miles and a big-
block engine can be a great investment
when the originality is maintained,
and as time marches on these vehicles
will become increasingly rare and
the values will rise. With that said,
installing a new-style engine doesn't
make the car worthless. It simply
removes a standard measurement of
the individual car's value. Instead the
car becomes worth what someone
is willing to pay, and on a well-done
conversion this can still equal a
substantial sum of money. Ride on!

Nowadays, $2,400 might afford
you a few upgrades for your low-
rider, but back 12 years ago it would
have landed you something a whole
lot more—like an entire project car.
Just ask San Diego native Alberto
Sotelo who picked up his Impala for
just $2,400.
He purchased the vehicle from
his brother-in-law as a rolling chas-
sis and it was the perfect project. In
part of envisioning his lowrider he
wanted every piece of the car to be
gone over with a fine-tooth comb,
but he also understood that it
would be a long-term project. The
car needed a full restoration, and
thankfully his dad, a retired welder,
contributed significantly to the
build. With little time to spare, they
did what they could when they had
the free time but they insisted that
the car be built properly. Instead of
patchworking the floor, they took

the time to cut it completely out
and replace it entirely. Every free
weekend was spent working on the
car, and annually Alberto would use
up his vacation time in order to put
in additional work with his father.
During the process, the
father-son team worked at doing
everything they possibly could, and
part of that was to hide the master
cylinder in the dash while incor-
porating a '59 dash into the build.

“My dad used to own a '59 Impala,
so we thought it would be a good
idea to incorporate that dash into
the build,” Alberto says. From there,
his father built the center console
and shaved the firewall. They did as
much as they possibly could with
the little time they had, but after 11
years they had finished everything
they could do themselves and that’s
when the car began going from
shop to shop until completion.
The first stop was the Riviera
Brothers. They finished up the
bodywork and laid the Candy
Tangerine paintjob with the pearl
white top. Afterward it was sent to
California Upholstery to have the
custom interior stitched together
while additional parts went to AP

in Anaheim to have everything
dipped in chrome. Jose Martinez
and Luis Garcia made a house call
to install the Pioneer system while
the LS1 powerplant was left to
Miggz, the San Diego LS man, to do
the install. In addition to dropping
in the heart of the beast, Miggz ran
master cylinder hard lines from
under the dash and then performed

a wire tuck to keep the pristine LS1
distraction free.
The 12-year build required
plenty of patience, and although
his mom insisted that “he get rid
of the junk,” the feelings definitely
changed upon its completion. Now
the neighbors come by, they sit in
it and take pictures, and it went
from being an eyesore to a prized

possession for not only his family
but his neighbors as well. In the
end, the 12 years spent making this
masterpiece were well worth the
wait and it sports the old-school
look and new-school technology he
had always hoped for.

and shows and I was always in

have my own car to take I must say
it’s a lot more fun.” Yet as he looks
back at his build, the one thing he
can definitely share is that the car
represents more than just a clean
show car. It serves as a monument to
all the memories it helped created. If
you were to ask him which memories
were best he’d be quick to tell you that
“the best part of building this car was
all the time I was able to spend with
my dad.”

Growing up in a household
of 10 forces you to be unique. It
pushes you to find your identity
and carve your own path; and for
Paulino Garcia, it did just that.
Growing up, Paulino knew that
he wanted to stand out. He didn’t
want to just fit in, he wanted to
make his mark and it drove him to
push—especially when it came to
academics and sports.
But that drive and ambition
was further fueled after seeing his

lowriding history. He found a '63
Chevy Impala convertible that fit
everything he was looking for. The
catalyst for the purchase was the
original owner had done all the
major work, molding, as well as the
installation of an LS motor, which
was completely chromed with a
touch of teal paint.

his local hydraulic guy so he could
go through the setup and make

younger kids to embrace and join
the Lowrider culture.

heaven. In an attempt to bring more
custom lowriders to the scene, we
decided to work together to bring
the Lowrider Nation installment
to exclusive shows in Houston, Salt
Lake, Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas,
and, of course, Omaha.
Since 1956, the Omaha World of
Wheels became a central hub where
exhibitors displayed and sold their
wares, while each show has boasted
over 300 competitive cars, bikes, and
trucks ranging from sport compacts,
full-blown customs, and lowriders.
Just like years past, the 62nd Annual
World of Wheels in Omaha had
plenty of award-winning show cars,
along with it special celebrity guest
appearances who were on hand for
pictures and autographs.

A broken promise impacts the

future, but a lie usually involves the
past. And while some see both as
the same, there is a difference. After
promising to not turn this truck
into a lowrider, he did the complete
opposite and in turn created yet an-
other amazing lowrider. So how did
it go down? Read up and find out.
As the owner of an '85 Monte
Carlo, Pinky took pride in his ride
but deep down inside what he re-
ally wanted was a Chevy Stepside.
He had wanted that truck ever

his wish, he was told to save up half
the money, and his father would put
in the rest.
Eager to take his father up on the
offer, he sold the Monte for $4,000
and began his search. Shortly there-
after is when he realized that both
he and his father were looking for
two entirely different trucks. Pinky
was looking for a project he could
build and call his own while his
father was looking for a truck that
was complete and ready to enjoy.
Looking to convince his father
otherwise, Pinky says, “I showed
him a ton of trucks but he would
always say no because they needed
too much work.” With no luck
convincing his father, it wasn’t until
a few months later that he found a
truck they both agreed upon. The
only problem was Pinky had al-
ready blown his share of the money.
With the perfect truck in hand, but
no money to contribute, his father
stepped up to the plate and decided
to buy the truck outright as a gift
for his son.
They called the seller who had On the ground 1951

Growing up, Joel’s entry into
the lowrider game began with a
'79 Monte Carlo. As years passed,
he wanted to get into something
classic, something with a bit more
soul, so he was determined to get
a '61 Impala—but also knew he
would settle on just about anything
in the ’60s so long as it was a ragtop.
As most stories go, he started
scouring the ’net to find his next
project and stumbled across a '61
convertible that was so rusted
even he wouldn’t go for it. Soon
after, he spotted a '62 Impala rag

but the only dilemma was the car
was located some 17 hours away.
Needless to say, it looked good, the
deal was right, and he was able to
convince his brother, Edgar, to take
the trip with him to Minnesota to
pick it up.
Upon their arrival, he was
amazed at the size of the property.
“The property was a few acres and
it was full of classic cars scattered
all throughout,” Joel says. As they
began to trek through the property
to locate the '62, the tension and
excitement began to build, but
once he saw the vehicle his heart
dropped. The car had rust damage
that wasn’t addressed or pictured
in the ad—and it was bad. Not
wanting to go back home empty-
handed he bit the bullet, did a little
negotiating, and took the chance
and purchased the car.
During the trek home, Joel’s
disappointment soon turned into
excitement. He began a mental
checklist as to what he wanted to
do and as soon as they pulled up to
his dad’s shop they began tearing it
apart, which is when he realized the

full extent of the rust damage. “The
floors needed to be replaced from
the front to the back. The quarter-
panels, front clip, and door were
rusted; the interior had no seats; and
to top it off the back of the frame had
been chopped off.” The car ended up
being a nightmare, to say the least,
but Joel had a vision and nothing
was going to stop him until he could
make it come to fruition.
Joel was only 21 when he
purchased his convertible and like
many 21-year-olds, he didn’t have
a lot of income coming in, so he
took matters into his own hands
and began working on it. At times
he was too busy to work on it, and
between a lack of time, lack of
motivation, and lack of money the

car would sit for months. “I spent
weekends at the shop working on
it while everyone my age was out
partying,” Joel says. At one point
in time, he began to wonder if
the car would take so long that
he’d die before it was completed,
and that woke him up. He didn’t
want his life to be wasted without
completing what he set out to do.
After becoming more financially
stable, he began dedicating more
time to the build.
Six years later, his drive,
ambition, and resilience brought
his dreams to life and while he
still has more things to do, he’s
glad that he can run the streets
knowing that the past few years
weren’t a waste.

Sometimes life throws you a
curveball to test your conviction.
For Bryan Loconto of Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, that curveball
came by accident—literally.
Bryan grew up on a quiet street
in Pembroke Pines, Florida, and
remembers the first time he saw a
Buick Regal three-wheeling down
the street. “It was like something
out of a movie,” Bryan tells LRM.
“It just mesmerized me.” It wasn’t
until he was 19 that he was able

friends, Lisa and Marisa, jumped

in to cruise it for the first time. As
they were cruising a lady clearly
not paying attention slammed
into the new Impala on a busy
street, crushing the front end and
sending his wife face first into the
dashboard.
With physical scrapes and
bruises, the Locontos were
healing quickly but Bryan’s dream
car was in shambles. The next
nine months were spent hunting

the entire car put back together
piece by piece. Once the Chevy
finally made it back to normal,
Bryan added disc brakes for safety
as well as upgraded the suspension
by having Keith’s Rod & Custom
help with that process. The next step
was putting in a reliable motor that
could have the power and durability
that the stock 348 big-block lacked.
He purchased an LS2 out of a
Pontiac G8 and Infamous Customs
did the work of installing it.

In high school many of us search
for our identity. We look for what
completes us and what makes us
feel good, and for Jeremy Hanes of
Jeffersonville, Indiana, that sense of
belonging and completion came by
way of joining a car club.
At 17 Jeremy became a member
of a club called Lowered Reality. He
joined the club along with friends;
his entry came by way of his Monte
Carlo, which he altered drastically.
His first modification was a hydraulic
setup and then he got into heavy body
mods that included removing the top.
Shortly thereafter, he was set to enjoy
his ride when the rear end of the car
fell off, a minor setback that did little
to stop him.
As his dreams of having a
classic car grew, his wallet may not
have matched his taste but he still
purchased what he could afford
one car at a time. With each car, his
customizing abilities grew and it
wasn’t up until he found a diamond
in the rough. He located a '68 Buick
La Sabre in Shepherdsville, Kentucky,
and the car was perfect. It was what
he was looking for and Jeremy tells
LRM, “It has big, sexy body lines and
it’s not a Chevy Impala like everyone
else has.”
The condition of the car wasn’t
too bad. It came with a beat-up
Chevy small-block, some oversized
wheels, and a ripped factory interior.
Given Jeremy’s reputation for
customization, he knew his plan for
the Buick and went to work. At first
he added an airbag system, tossed the
wheels, and threw some Supremes on
it, but that initial makeover wouldn’t
last long. Soon he brought the La
Sabre to a body shop and had the car
brought down to primer, sanding
down the body and removing all the
rust. At that point the door handles

Indiana. To give his new classic a special
touch, Jeremy purchased an '08
Pontiac G8 and removed the entire
drivetrain. The LS6 six-speed
automatic transmission was added
to replace the stock motor. Of course
it wasn’t an easy task as he had to
weld new motor mounts, cut out the
firewall and floorboard. The next
step was to re-tunnel the floor for the
driveshaft. Once the computer was
flashed and the Buick was rewired to
handle the new power, it was time to
work on the body.
At a loss as to what he wanted
to achieve, he began searching for
painters to add a custom flare to his
Buick. One particular painter who
stood out was Sal Manzano who did
unique and creative paintwork. The
problem was he lived in California
and Jeremy was in Indiana. That

wasn’t a big issue for Jeremy since he
flew Sal down to him, and seven days
later a multi-colored blend was laid
out using 54 rolls of tape and four
rolls of paper.
His next step was altering the
suspension and bringing the La
Sabre down to the ground. Based
on his reputation, Jeremy enlisted
Jason Caranto to add a full
custom hydraulic setup, including
hand-bent hardlines. Once that
was complete, he brought the
Buick to Hyrum at Bingham
Designs in his hometown. Hyrum
as a one-man show was able
to complete an entire custom
interior, including replacing the
seats with Ford Explorer chairs in
less than a week.
The entire build of "Wet Dreams"
took one full year and was built to
absolute perfection. Jeremy wishes
to thank everyone who had a hand

After spending well over a decade

with Nokturnal Car Club, Mike has
not only rep’d the club, but rep’d it
well. Entry into the club all began
with a tricked-out Candy Apple
Red Escalade with enough bells and
whistles that we actually featured it
years back. From there he felt a need
for change, so he sold the hulky SUV
to get a new platform to work on. This
time around he went with a Lexus
sedan, and he’s since given the once
family sedan a makeover worthy of
yet another feature.
In 2007, Mike paid a visit to a local
dealership and rolled out with an '07
Lexus GS 350. With absolutely no time
wasted, he began by dropping it off in
Arizona at Chofy’s Airbrushing. Once
there, the Lexus was taken down and
prepped and that’s when Rene Alonso
laid down an intricate paintjob that
sported a multitude of colors, starting
with a Candy Passion Purple paint.
From there he followed it up with pink,
blue, and light purple patterns flowing

When a friend needed a ride to
pick up his newly purchased bike at
the local Harley-Davidson dealership,
Rolando Caudillo was quick to oblige.
Rolando himself had always been a fan
of HDs so it sounded like a fun trip.
Without hesitation, Rolando did so
with pleasure but little did he know that
the trip—and an innocent joke—would
lead him down an unexpected path.
After dropping his friend off,
Rolando was about to pull off when he
leaned over to his wife, Michelle, and
jokingly asked her if she would buy

her eyes, the seemingly innocent joke
escalated to entirely different proportions
and literally landed him in the hot seat.
But this is where the story gets better. Yep,
the very next day Rolando found himself
on the driver seat of a brand-new Harley-
Davidson Road King Classic.
But the bike was much more than
a work of art. The bike represented
Stretched fenders, a throwback in time and served as a

custom Torch reminder of not only his youth, but his
Industries exhaust father. As a child, Rolando’s father used
influenced by the
lowrider style. to take him to local car shows and it was

there he took an affinity to the culture
that had grown ever since. Now with a
newly acquired HD, Rolando already
knew exactly what he wanted to do. He
started the complete overhaul, taking
cues from his lowriding roots and
creating the incredible machine you
see here.
First on the list was an upgraded
exhaust courtesy of Torch Industries in
Phoenix. The bike would then receive
stretched fenders, saddlebags, and a
custom air-ride suspension. To up the
overall appeal, the entire bike was cov-
ered in House of Kolor Kandy Cobalt
Blue and then accented with gold leaf
pinstriping lines and scrolls. Tons of
new chrome was bolted on, as well as
the American Wire wheel with white-
wall tires. With an Alpine audio system
now blaring out his favorite tunes, it
was time to finally hit the boulevard.
“One day, I hope my kids have the op-

Working on a lowrider, or any classic
car for that matter, comes with its fair
share of surprises. From what you find
nudged between the seats to what you
may find in the trunk, a classic car is an
anomaly waiting to be discovered.

on what we can see when we do a
visual walk around. We look at the
lines, gauge the condition of the body,

When you’re idling at the light, or
stuck in a traffic jam of cars waiting
to exit a car show, the one thing you
have to do is keep it cool. Now, we’re
not talking about your temper or
your patience, we’re talking about the
cooling system in your car, and in
specific the water pump. The water
pump of your car is an impeller that
pushes the coolant through the block
and to the radiator where forced air (by
way of a fan) brings the temperature
down; and while it may be the smallest
part of your cooling system, it plays a
vital role in keeping the temps down.

So how do headers help create
more power? Well, those familiar
with engine dynamics understand
that there are four strokes (intake,
compression, power, exhaust)
required to create power, but the two
most commonly discussed are the
power stroke and the exhaust stroke.
During the exhaust stroke, the
exhaust valve opens at the beginning
of the exhaust stroke, and then the
piston will exert all exhaust gases
out of the cylinder. This is where
the headers come into play. Factory
exhaust manifolds are typically
smaller in diameter, creating
unwanted backpressure. They are
typically constructed out of one
common outlet that is directed to
one pipe, whereas headers have
individual pipes (of equal length)
for each cylinder—thus limiting
backpressure and creating more
horsepower. By having equal-
length tubes it guarantees that
the cylinder’s exhaust gases arrive

to the collector at the same time,
thus making a more efficient
and turbulent exit. In short, less
pressure plus more flow equal a
more efficient running engine and
additional horsepower.

something that just can’t erase the
memories of your first love. Long
after it ends, we still can’t seem to
forget the first time we touched. We
can recall the first time we laid eyes
on her and who can ever forget the
first time sliding it in–the key, that

with a '58, '60, and '64 Impala there
was nothing that could keep Jim’s
mind from his first true love. At one
point he even took a stab at a '58

Building lowrider bikes is what
Rene Valdez knows best. What started
off as a hobby has now become a life-
style that he’s fully immersed in. For
the past decade Rene has been honing
his craft and elevating the playing
field, but this time around he wanted
to push the boundaries of a lowrider
bike and create a stunning showpiece
in collaboration with his brother.
To begin, they started with a '69
Sting-Ray frame. The frame was
taken down to bare metal and once
that was accomplished the brothers
sat back and discussed ideas and con-
cepts. In reality, this meeting of the
minds was no simple task. Each had
their own opinion and vision, and
this is where a creative class began.
While no easy task, the two wound
up ironing out their differences and
eventually all things worked out.
With the frame complete, it
was prepped for paint and doused

with a silver flake, followed up with
hues of paint from House of Kolor.
With pink, purple, and red patterns
elegantly gracing the frame, one can
also find a host of ’striping that is
done in lavender and pink. Accenting
the frame is a barrage of two-tone
chrome and gold plating and upon
close inspection you’ll find a slew of BIKE MODEL

are happy with the outcome, but their
realistic outlook on the build also has
them understanding that there was
still more to do and a lot left on the
table that could’ve been done.
In light of that, we know that the
boys’ll be back at the drawing table
sometime soon so we’re in high
anticipation about their next build,
because there’s no stopping them.

When you drive a restored '51 Chevy
DeLuxe Fleetline there’s a certain amount
of pride in knowing that you’ve endured
the trials and tribulations of not only
owning but driving a complete, ready-
to-run lowrider. But sit down with Angie
Flores, the owner of this Fleetline, and
you may just find yourself more intrigued
about her life story than her car.
Born in Nayarit, Mexico, Angie was
raised in an adobe dwelling prior to
arriving in the United States at just 2 years
old. With no memories of ever being
raised in Mexico, she does remember the
later years when they migrated to the Le
Grand farming community in Merced.
With the intent of keeping their children
in school, her parents and their entire
family worked as seasonal workers in
the fields and at just 12 years old (and
in sixth grade), she found her summers

occupied for the next two years. But the
hard work created a discipline and work
ethic that was unmatched. The one thing
that was ingrained in their heads was that
if they wanted something they’d have to
earn their keep—and that included their
school clothes.
In eighth grade she was selected for a
program in which she went to school for
four hours and worked another four. At
the time she was categorized as an “at-risk
youth” and she found the label troubling,
as she viewed herself as the polar
opposite. Not one to back down from
a challenge, the label became Angie’s
driving force to excel in school and she
eventually graduated from Sacramento
State University with a degree in criminal
justice. Upon completion, she decided to
join law enforcement, wanting to work
with troubled kids, so she landed a job at

juvenile hall for a year before leaving to
go back to school where she obtained her
credentials in teaching. Since then, she’s
been a kindergarten teacher (for the past
17 years) and has found solace in being
able to identify and assist low-income
immigrants.
When asked about the most satisfying
parts of her job, she believes that it’s the
ever-expanding challenges she faces each
year. In part of helping these children she
understands all too well that you must
acknowledge their background and
expose them to positive feedback and
counseling during their formative years.
She also understands that their percep-
tions are molded by what they see and
learn and realizes that at the end of the
day it is the adults they are surrounded
by who act as their role models, which is
why displaying a sense of care, concern,
and acknowledging their achievements
is a pivotal part in building them up as
young adults.
As a one-time “at-risk youth” she vows
to never have any of her students labeled
in that manner, and while she proved
otherwise, it has now become her life
mission to make sure that none of her
students ever have to experience what
she went through. In addition to break-
ing the mold in the education industry,
she also loves the fact that she dispels the
myths about women and lowriding. As
this Lowrider Roll Model, presented
by Quaker State and Shell Lubricants,
hits the corner of the block, the heads
turn and the cameras snap as she brings
school back into session, letting the fellas
know that lowriding is an equal-oppor-
tunity lifestyle that she’s proud to school
the naysayers about.
