Texes Competencies

Competency 001:

The teacher understands human development processes and applies this knowledge to plan

instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive to their

developmental characteristics and needs.

 A teacher must be mindful of the human development process. It helps to better

plan lessons around a student’s capabilities at that age. Being knowledgeable in

the human development process helps teachers have a better grasp on what

lessons are suitable for that age.

Competency 002:

The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning experiences and

design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that promote all

students’ learning.

 An instructor must be aware that all students learn differently. Some students

need more help or various learning styles to meet their objective. There needs to

be lessons that are not targeted to a specific student. Lessons need to be able to be

adaptable to all different kinds of students.

Competency 003:

The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent instruction and

assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.

 An educator must understand how to design specific lessons for appropriate

learning objectives. Each student needs to be exposed to different lessons that are

appropriate to master a specific objective. It needs to be a constant reminder that

every child has their own learning style.

Competency 004:

The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student learning and

demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and appropriate

assessments

 A teacher must understand learning differences students may have. They must

also be knowledgeable in other factors that may affect a student’s learning. It is

also important to have engaging lesson plans and to take steps to asses each

child’s learning style and needs in the classroom.

Competency 005:

The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning, equity and

excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment that is safe

and productive.

 A teacher must understand how to accommodate all students in their classroom.

Teachers need to provide a safe place for learning and growth. They also need to

provide the classroom with an emotionally stable space. All students are equal

and need to have a teacher and class that enables productivity.

Competency 006:

The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive learning

environment and for managing student behavior.

 A teacher must understand how to properly manage student’s behavior. They also

must be able to provide organization in their class and lessons to produce

effective learning. All of these are important for growth emotionally and help

with efficiency.

Competency 007:

The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for communicating effectively in

varied teaching and learning contexts.

 You must understand how to properly communicate to effectively deliver lessons.

A teacher must also know how to communicate in various ways because of

diversity and different levels of comprehension. Communication is an important

aspect of being a successful teacher.

Competency 008:

The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in the learning

process.

 A teacher must successfully provide guidance when teaching. For a student to be

able to master a lesson there needs to be clear and precise instruction. You also

must engage students so that they will remain focused on the task at hand.

Competency 009:

The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver and evaluate

instruction for all students.

 An educator needs to know current technology to incorporate it into their teaching

and lesson plans. You also need to know current technology to use to evaluate

students through different testing and applications. A teacher needs to know

different formats of technology like slide shows, presentations internet news

articles to use in educating students.

Competency 010:

The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides students with timely, high-

quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all students.

 You must be able to monitor a student’s progress to see where they are making

progress or falling behind in. Feedback will help a student or parent to see where

the student is at. An educator needs to be able to help students of all learning

levels.

Competency 011:

The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s education and

knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families

 It is important to be able to understand that a parent’s involvement is detrimental

to a student. A teacher must be able to effectively communicate to parents or

guardians. You need to be able to maintain interaction with parents to provide

information and concerns to best help a student.

Competency 012:

The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively interacting with other

members of the educational community and participating in various types of professional

activities.

 It is important to stay up to date in training and information in education.

Workshops and interacting with the educational community helps a teacher to

stay up to date to better serve their class. Education is always changing and to be

a successful educator you need to evolve with it.

Competency 013:

The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for educators and is

knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas.

 As a person serving and teaching the community it is important to adhere to

ethical and legal requirements. A teacher must understand the way an educator is

expected to be in that state of Texas. Its is important to know the laws and

requirements so that there are no repercussions or situations you might get into

that would reflect poorly as an educator in Texas.
