School: Boltz Middle School Grade Level: 7th Content Area: English Title: Introduction to Gothic Literature
Lesson Idea/Topic and This will be the very first lesson of a 6-week unit about Gothic literature. The intent it to spark the students’ interest, and to
Rationale/Relevance: give them a chance to explore a genre that is not typically studied. Gothic literature is important because it shows all sides of
humanity, even the darker sides which are not typically studied.
The room will be arranged in group stations, the lights will be off, and string lights will take their place. This will hopefully set
the tone for students to get excited about Gothic Literature.
Student Profile:
Standard class of 30 students, class meets every day for one hour.
- 7.2.1.B.ii: Analyze how a drama’s or poem’s form or structure contributes to its meaning.
- 7.4.1: Answering a research question logically begins with obtaining and analyzing information from a variety of sources.
Inquiry Questions:
- What makes Gothic literature different from other genre’s that are typically studied?
- Every student will be able to learn about Gothic literature, this means that students will participate in a Gothic Literature Tasting in order to immerse
themselves in the genre.
- Every student will be able to identify Gothic literature, this means that students will understand the aspects of Gothic literature and how they are
different from other genres of literature.
List of Assessments:
- Students will complete a pre-assessment in the form of a Google form. They will do this after watching a short-animated clip. This assessment will not be
graded for correctness, it will be graded for completion. It will help me to see where they students started, and major holes that I need to fill in. This will
also help me determine if the Gothic Literature Tasting was successful in broadening their understanding of Gothic literature. (7.4.1)
- While completing the Gothic Literature Tasting, the students will be filling out a worksheet. This worksheet will help the students stay on task, and it will
also help them decipher the important information that they are supposed to learning. This sheet will also be used as a study guide for the unit
assessment quiz. This quiz will take place in week 6, so it is important that the students update this worksheet frequently, and with as much detail as they
can. Students may not be able to complete the whole worksheet in class; the rest would be assigned for homework. This worksheet will help me to
determine whether or not more time needs to be spent introducing Gothic literature before fully immersing the students in the genre. (7.4.1)
