Department/Team: Communications

Background:
The Communications (C-Team) contributes to the development and
implementation of media strategies using appropriate political
awareness and sensitivity. Our team is responsible for using effective,
pro-active skills to communicate the Mayor's decisions, policies,
stances and strategies to print radio and television mediums.

The Communications team also uses pro-activeness to generate news


coverage, by writing press releases and articles, as well as providing
background to the media. In addition, our department monitors and
evaluates print, radio and television media coverage of the Mayor, and,
respond to media inquiries quickly and efficiently in order to sustain
positive coverage of the Mayor's activities.

The Communications team monitors news, relevant to the Mayor, and


provides rebuttal and amplification where necessary. As a whole, it is
our department’s/group’s/team’s responsibility to understand the
benefits of Los Angeles' diversity. We do so by promoting and enabling
equality of opportunities and promoting the diverse needs and
aspirations of Los Angeles communities.

Position:
While working under the supervision of the press deputy and reporting
to the press aide, the Communications team intern will assist in media
research and media monitoring of the Mayor’s day-to-day media
activities.

The intern will also assist in media material distribution at all press
conferences and be responsible for press conference image capturing
(picture taking).

The intern will gain hands-on political communication experience, and


also gain exposure to areas such as: media relations, website and
press material development, special event and press conference
planning and internal strategy session planning.

Junior or Senior (3rd or 4th year) academic standing, pursuing a
Bachelor's degree in any of the following disciplines: journalism,
communication, political science, public relations, english, history,
literature, composition, comparative literature, sociology, social
sciences, business, business administration, marketing or photography.

The Communications team intern should be a strategic thinker with


excellent oral and written communication skills, intellectual curiosity,
and a firm commitment to the program. Proficiency in Microsoft Word
and Excel is a must.
