Course Number: CHMG-131 Course Title: General Chemistry for Engineers
Undergraduate:  Credits: 3
Graduate: NA Effective Date: January 2017

Prerequisites: High-School Chemistry Co-requisites: None

 Course Description (Catalog Description):

This course is primarily for, but not limited to, engineering students. Topics include an introduction to
some basic concepts in chemistry, stoichiometry, First Law of Thermodynamics, thermochemistry,
electronic theory of composition and structure, and chemical bonding. The lectures are supported by in-
class workshop-style problem sessions.

 Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this course, a student will be able to:

 Use significant figures, units, and scientific notation properly

 Demonstrate skill in solving problems and presenting problem solutions
 Classify, differentiate, and describe the subatomic particles
 Write the electronic structure of an atom and hence predict chemical properties/reactivity based
on the periodic table
 Predict geometry based upon numbers and types of covalent bonds in molecules
 Write and balance chemical equations, to predict theoretical yields and calculate percentage yields
 Classify, differentiate, and describe various types of chemical reactions
 Know more about gases and their behaviors
 Predict the reaction behaviors based on thermochemistry

 Textbook:
* R. Petrucci, F. Herring, J. Madura, C. Bissonnette, General Chemistry: Principles and Modern
Applications

 Supplemental Material:
* J. Kotz, P. Treichel, G. Weaver, Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity
* S. Zumdahl, S. Zumdahl, Chemistry: the Central Science

 Student Evaluation:
The final grade for the course will be computed based on the areas of work as shown below:
