ABSTRACT

The use of truss system as a beam moment bearer is often done on buildings using steel
structures. There are two purposes for using this truss system as a beam on a steel
structure, to carry the gravity load and functionate as a horizontal rod from a lateral
load-bearing system. Economically there are several advantages that can be obtained
from this truss beam, when compared with solid beam. However, in some cases that
have been studied by some enginer, the use of blocks with a truss system like this, on
steel structures, will cause inelastic behavior in the column and remain elastic on the
truss if there is a strong earthquake. This one because usually in the design will
produced a large frame height, so that the beam is more rigid than the column, and if
exposed to the earthquake load, resulting in collapsed columns before the beam. In
order to improve the performance of the truss system as a strong momentum beam, a
research has been done on the modified form. Some Vierendeel panels are added around
the middle-spans as ductile segments (Basha and Goel, 1996). Such a structural system
is known as SRBPMK (Special Moment Frame Time Frame System) or STMF (Special
Truss Moment Frames). To know more in the use of this STMF this Final Project will
do steel building planning with this system. Referring to the above experimental and
some regulations, and that is UBC 1997, AISC-LRFD 1999, and Steel Structure
Planning for Buildings Using LRFD Method (PSBUBG 2000) and ATC 40 as a
reference for planning, how the inelastic behavior on the Special Moment Frame Beam
Frame System with the Vierendeel panel as a ductile segment by Pushover. For
structural analysis methods and ductility evaluation Push Over used software tools
ETABS version 8.00. Thus, the effectiveness of the building, especially on the lateral
load is the earthquake load
