GMR’s water injection system is similar in principle to the ones used

And let’s be honest, it’s not exactly
the most glamorous car, is it? Back
in January of last year, we ran a story
on the upcoming replacement and
in it there was a telling quote from a
factory insider on how the C-class is
perceived by Mercedes. “We want to
make it no longer a car driven by your
grandad,” they told us. Harsh, but fair.
As with the Mini and Qashqai, we
know what’s in store for the upcoming
C-class. A stylish exterior for starters,
and, just for good measure, a truly
exquisite interior that would not look
out of place in an S-class.
On the dynamic front, a multitude
of chassis set-up choices will be
offered in order to tackle complaints
about the ride, including a segment-
first air suspension option.
So if I’ve got this right the new
C-class will be a car for grandad and

grandson alike to enjoy, and one
that Mercedes hopes – and expects –
will finally give a bloody nose to the

most interesting feature is its high-pressure common-rail i-ART
injection system, supplied and developed in collaboration with Denso.
The ‘i-ART’ stands for intelligent accuracy refinement technology.
Most similar injection systems are moderated, via the ECU, using
pressure sensors located in the injection rails, but i-ART has
individual pressure sensors for each cylinder. It’s therefore capable of
much wider and more subtle combustion control than rival systems,
injecting fuel at up to 2500bar, through up to nine individual
injections per cycle, when necessary — but normally operating
with just three or four.
The upshot is that the ECU can keep much more precise and

What to look out for

Any misfiring or hesitation in acceleration with the petrol
engines can be a result of coking up of the valves — usually
caused by cheap fuel. It can be cleaned, although it requires the
manifolds to be removed to do so.
Steering racks can fail. If the steering is heavy or inconsistent in
its weighting, have it checked out. If it fails, every warning light
on the dashboard will light up, too.
Listen for any hissing or siren-like sounds when driving the 2.0

flaps in the manifold. Any excess boost will cause it to shut down
