Technical drilling issues in a borewell in

Virajpet,Karnataka Need solutions to dig further
Posted By : sojankalappa (/dashboard/sojankalappa) Posted Date : Tue, 2011-03-01 15:16

I had a problem when drilling borewell for irrigation purpose and the drillers say that the air is
passing and would not be able to drill any further. This happened 2 years back in Kodagu, Virajpet,
Karnataka in South India and even the geologist report says between 60- 80 feet the rig operator will
face the problem of air passing.

Tried to get the borewell done with 6inch diameter rig and the 1st time at 60 feet there was air
passing and could not proceed any further. The rig operator stopped proceeding further as he said
that the drilling cannot be done.  There was no casing installed.

Geologist report also says that there is a possibility of air pass but that is only a minor problem
which the riggers would take care of as mentioned earlier. But the drillers are unable to proceed
further.

Need to know how we can proceed in drilling further. Is there any technique that will help resolve
the situation ?

Regards

Sojan Kalappa

Dear Sir,

You think for alternagte type of drilling.  Use Calliz type of drilling machine.  Go with
normal drilling with water is drilling fluid.  When you reach somewheere near 55 or 56 feet
ask the driller to mix thick clay or Bendonite mud and negotiate drilling.  May be after one
hour or two hours of  rotation "Mud Cake" will form and you can proceed further.  As soon
as you reach further down about 5 more feet you can insert appropriate casing.

For the remaining recommended depth you can use normal DTH rigs. The so call void may
not be more than 12 inches of 20 inches wide.  Normally about 6 inches voilds are heard off.

With best wishes,

Dear Sojan Kalappa,

It seems that you have a large cavity or lateral zone through which there is loss of drilling
fluid ( air in your case)

What you could try is what is normally done while drilling for oil. We too have done it to
seal of zones at depth through which water was flowing out of the borewell.

You could drill to this depth, and then try to seal the horizontal joint system by pouring in
cement slurry. naturally this should be quick setting cement slurry that you will use.

There is no gurantee how much of cement you may have to pump in, but definately after
some itme say 15 minutes or so the cement starts setting and becomes more viscous and
tends to seal of the zone near and around the borewell at that depth.

After the cement is hardened you could always redrill through it with out any problem
using the same dth drillign rig.

To be sure please take advice of some civil enginer to get the right kind of fast setting
cement slurry and the pumping equipment to carry out this job.

It would not be cheap, but definately it will solve the problem of loss of drilling fluid, if this
situation again occurs at depth, the same excercise coudl be repeated.

Best of Luck
