My Experiences as a Pre service Teacher

I have been a student at Islamic State University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau for 6 semesters, and over the

course of my study, it was my first time I had a teaching assignment and literally became my first challenge (at

4th semester).

I taught 10th grade students at Al- Izhar Vocational High School and spent about 30 minutes in teaching. A few

minutes before teaching I had some conversations with an English teacher that usually teach them. I had to

combine my teaching material with the students’ lesson that I had no idea before.

I had prepared the lesson plan and the learning materials to teach my students. All I have should in a written

form. Usually I make a list about what I am going to do while teaching and it based on the lesson plan. There

were some challenges when I preparing my teaching. It could be about the choosing an appropriate materials

and of course the choosing of media. That is a the things that we should take into account before teaching our

students and the advantage of course we can be more prepared and have a well performed.

When the time came for me to begin my student teaching, all I could do was to hope and pray that things would

go smoothly. I soon found out that any worries I had were no longer an issue. I assumed that the student would

be noisy. However, during the class, almost all of the students listened very closely to every word that I said.

This was one assumption that I was very pleased to be proved wrong on. The students saw a young college

student, which was something that excited them. I would to say that my teaching wasn’t always run well

because there was any contradiction with what I was setting out to do.

First of all I introduced myself before started to teach. I taught them about daily products that they use every

day and asked them to write 15 daily products on a piece of paper, then asked them to tell their personal reason

of using the products. My challenge was to combine their lesson with the “daily products”. Their lesson was

about “telling the time”. I gave their time about 15 minutes to make it.

I used full English during the class. Some of the students looked enthusiastic and some didn’t. I gave them a

simple example in front of the class before they wrote further. I realized that I spoke badly. Then I asked them
whether they understand or not and they said no. I felt totally had messed it up. Finally, I gave them further

explanation by face to face talk. I expected they could understand me well.

A few minutes went by and I asked the student to do a presentation in front of the class. I just asked three

students to do a presentation because the time was limited. I waited for them but no one of them wanted to do a

presentation because they had not finished yet. I assumed that the student would be nervous to do a

presentation.

Finally, there was a volunteer to do a presentation. I gave a present to him and it motivated the other student to

do a presentation as well. The first student did a presentation by looking at his note and he did not tell about

their personal reasons of using the products and just telling the time instead. It happened until the last student

and the thing was I forgot to clear it up. It means that my planning and the actual teaching condition didn’t go

smoothly. I just kept it going. Honestly I had no idea about plan B. I didn’t change any plan anyway. It was a

biggest challenge when taught them to speak in front of the class, teaching speaking to be exact. It is a

productive skill and taught them to produce something it’s a challenge because I as a teacher should have a

better understanding, a better performance than my students. The most advantage that I got while teaching was

that a new experience.

That was my first time in teaching and I had a bad way to convey my idea. I had a problem about how to share

my knowledge with students who may have no idea what I talked about. Not all of the students could

understand me well. Some students are high-knowledge and some may not. My job made them understand was

not like I expected but, as Phill Collins says in the Son of Man lyrics “In learning you will teach, and in

teaching you will learn” is really motivate me. I honestly have to say that I felt a little overwhelmed and not

that satisfied with my teaching experience. I hope to learn more about how teachers share their knowledge in

teaching as part of my study and I should improve my skill in teaching productive skill and anything that

related to pedagogy. I should know and master.
