Skin diseases can be caused by infection, an infection that is the most common diseases suffered by

people in the country of Indonesia. One of the causes of infection is bacteria (Radjie, 2011). The term
infections describes the growth or replication of microorganisms in the host's body. Disease arises when
infection produces a change in the normal physiology of the body (Pratiwi, 2008).

Staphylococcus aureus bacteria is a normal bacterial flora of the skin, respiratory tract, and food
digestive tract in humans. Pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus will be invasive causing haemolysis,
forming coagulase, and capable of dispensing mannitol (Jawetz et al., 2008). Toxins produced from
Staphylococcus aureus (staphilotoksin, staphylococcal enterotoxin, and exfoliatin) allow these organisms
to sneak in the tissues and can stay for long periods in the area of infection, causing minor skin
infections (Bowersox, 2007). Staphylococcus aureus causes extensive infection syndrome. Skin infections
can occur in warm humid conditions or when the skin is exposed due to diseases such as eczema,
surgical wounds, or due to intravenous devices (Gillespie, & Bamford, 2008)

Plants are a source of natural products as an alternative medicine for the treatment of infectious
diseases. Plants have an almost unlimited ability to synthesize aromatic compounds. One of the plants
used for treatment is kedondong (Spondias pinnata Kurz). Plant kedondong (Spondias pinnata Kurz) has
the potential as an antibacterial substance. Plant kedondong including Anacardeaceae family which is a
fruit crop or garden plant that is found in almost the entire tropics. In addition to edible fruit, young
leaves are boiled made fresh vegetables by the people of Indonesia. The fiber content is good enough,
so it can be used to maintain health (MOH, 2007).

In young leaves, bark, and root bark of the kedondong plant (Spondias pinnata Kurz) contain
phytochemical compounds such as flavonoids, tannins and saponins (Gupta et al., 2010). Flavonoids can
act as antioxidants that work to ward off free radicals that minimize the effects of damage to cells and
molecules of the body such as DNA, protein, and fat because it is a class of polyphenols that are
chemical components that act as antioxidants (Dungir et al., 2012; , 2013). Saponins and tannins are
suspected as antibacterial compounds in the leaf kedondong (Inayati, 2007). Based on the above
description, the researcher will conduct research on antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of leaf
kedondong (Spondias pinnata Kurz) on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with concentration
of 5% w / v, 10% w / v and 15% w / v.
