Using the checklist below, evaluate the student’s overall performance for the Quarter Marking Period.
Feel free to elaborate, and please share this evaluation with the student.

An “A” Student:
• Consistently contacts the Mentor and meets the required monthly hours.
• Consistently demonstrates initiative by asking questions and showing evidence of ongoing
research.
• Consistently perseveres in the face of setbacks; sees a task through.
• Consistently seeks experiences and resources
• Consistently shares assignments with the Mentor to gain feedback: Annotated Source List,
Research Project Proposal, Synthesis Paper, Abstract, and Assessments.

A “B” Student:
• Usually contacts the Mentor and meets the required monthly hours.
• Usually demonstrates initiative by asking questions and showing evidence of ongoing
research.
• Usually perseveres in the face of setbacks; sees a task through.
• Usually seeks experiences and resources.
• Usually shares assignments with the Mentor to gain feedback.

A “C” Student:
• Sometimes contacts the Mentor and meets the required monthly hours.
• Sometimes demonstrates initiative by asking questions and showing evidence of ongoing
research.
• Sometimes perseveres in the face of setbacks; sees task through.

Overall Evaluation: X A (Excellent Performance)

B (Good Performance)
C (Satisfactory Performance)
Less than Satisfactory Performance: Please explain below.

Additional Comments: Your comments provide valuable reflection for the student and teacher.
Clara has been making good progress towards defining a suitable challenge that will build both
her practical mathematical knowledge and her computing skills. She is now learning about a
body of MATLAB code used for military tactical modeling. She will then apply her skills to
create a more efficient alternative interpolation routine to the one in the MATLAB library that is
used by the code. A success in this work could lead to a significant improvement in the
efficiency of the overall system. I encourage Clara to stay engaged with me on her class progress
as well, particularly if I can provide review or additional resources (readings or other experts) to
support her research.

Quarter 1 Summary Journal

Throughout Quarter 1, I completed all of the introductory steps for starting my project,

and took advantage of some of the learning opportunities APL offers. Because we had to be in

class for the initial week, my first day on site was on the 26th. I then had my start-up conference

on the 28th with my mentor and my teacher in order to officially finish all of the paperwork. For

the first couple of weeks, I completed work for my intern-mentor class, such as finding and

annotating articles or planning when I would need to be on site in order to reach (or hopefully

exceed) my required hours for the month of October. I would also research topics in Applied

Mathematics that could interest me. I was able to agree with my mentor that I would start with a

smaller project and then possibly complete a larger project or another smaller project later in the

year. Throughout the quarter, I was able to attend a presentation that my mentor gave concerning

a use of one of APL’s modeling softwares. I was also able to attend one of the intern trainings for

the Vinyl Cutter in the Makerspace, and I have signed up for a 3D printer training for next

quarter.
