 What is Asthma?
• Chronic condition that causes the air ways to become
tightened
• Causes the production of extra mucus making it difficult to
breath (lungs cannot receive correct amount of air)
• Airway becomes sensitive and reacts easily to “triggers”

 What are Triggers?
• Anything that makes the inflammation of the airway worse

➢ Exposure to allergens (dust, pollen)

 Diagnosis
• 50-80% of children diagnosed with asthma experience
symptoms before the age of 5

Diagnostic Tests

➢ Medical History- look at pattern of symptoms, family history

and response to medications

➢ Spirometry Test (lung functioning test)- measures amount of

air you can breath in & out as well as how fast you can blow
out (only works well with children over 5)
 Treatments
Long-Term Control (daily,
controls)
• Inhaled/Oral corticosteroids-
reduces inflammation, and
mucus production (primary
medication for swelling)
• Long-acting beta agonist-
inhaled medication that can be
added to an inhaled
corticosteroid which relaxes
the muscles of the airway,
doesn’t reduce inflammation
Short-Acting Control (as needed,
prevents)
• Short-acting beta agonist-
inhaled medication which
acts faster at relaxing the
muscle of the airway,
doesn’t reduce inflammation
(should already be taking a
corticosteroid)

 Complications caused by Asthma
• Many children experience symptoms of an attack at night
which can lead to sleep deprivation
• Because asthmatic children may avoid exercise, they have
a higher risk of developing things like diabetes and high
blood pressure
• Has even been associated with growth delay mainly
because of the long-term use of oral corticosteroids, but
since the use of inhalation steroids it hasn’t been a
problem

 Prevalence of Asthma
• Leading chronic disease in children
• 8.4% of children have asthma in America (<18)
• 1 in 12 children have asthma
• In 2015 219 children passed away from an asthma
related death

 Prevention
• Asthma cannot be prevented however, children can prevent
asthma attacks
• Use medications as prescribed by doctor
• Track symptoms
• Follow the asthma action plan provided by doctor

 Conclusion
• By researching and completing my project, I have learned
many things about asthma that I had not known before. I
was also able to see many cases of asthma at my
mentorship site which allowed become more familiar with
the condition, and see first hand how it is treated.

I would like to thank Mrs. Click, my parents, and my mentor
Angelica. These amazing people helped me strive and become
successful in this class. Mrs. Click was there to help me when I
had troubles with anything, and my parents were overall very
supportive. My mentor Angelica is a great nurse and I would
like to thank her for allowing me to shadow and learn new
things from her. Lastly I would like to thank Mrs. Pena and
Mrs. Lynch, for taking time out of their day to view and
evaluate my presentation.
