INTRODUCTION

Leadership is defined as the process of influencing and supporting others to work

enthusiastically toward achieving objectives.1 When you think of a leader you think of someone

who motivates and pushes you in a positive direction. You think of someone you can trust;

someone who is dedicated to meeting their goals and obligations. You think of a charismatic

individual that exudes self confidence; an individual with an insurmountable amount of energy

and personal drive. You think of someone with intelligence and compassion. No leader can lead

effectively without having the above traits and qualities listed. Although there are more traits

that exist, we feel we have listed to most important. Every leader should possess qualities that

would make them effective and great in the eyes of their followers. A great leader should

possess qualities that would motivate his/her followers to go above and beyond in times of

disaster or when it seems that there is no hope or promise for going on to meet a particular goal.

LEADERSHIP QUALITIES

1. FOLLOWERSHIP: There is an old saying that says before one can lead they must be

able to follow. It can be interpreted as you cannot expect to lead someone if you yourself

do not know how to follow in someone else’s footsteps; how to take an order; be loyal

and supportive or not act as the devil’s advocate. A leader who is able to follow can

sympathize more with his/her subordinates because they themselves know the issues they

may face as a follower.

2. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: A good leader should have somewhat mastered the

art of communication so that he/she can effectively get their vision across to their

followers. No follower can follow their leader if they do not understand the goals and or

objectives set out for them.

3. DEDICATION: Dedication to a goal is a very important quality in a leader. It’s the

quality that shows a willingness and ability to give whatever time or energy needed to

complete the goals or objective at hand. By doing this, a leader can inspire followers to

go above and beyond the call of duty of a nine to five job.

4. SELF AWARENESS: This is the ability to recognize and understand ones emotions,

moods and motivations. This ability also allows the leader to know his or her limits to

what they can do. This quality is vital in a leader so that he/she can understand the

moods, motivation and emotions of his/her followers because what may trigger an

alternative outcome with themselves may also do the same for others.

5. SELF CONFIDENCE: A good leader should always have high confidence in his or

herself when dealing with team members and leadership role. If they cannot believe in

themselves how can they expect their followers to believe in them or even trust them?
6. PERSONAL DRIVE AND ENERGY: A leader should possess

7. HUMAN SKILL: This is the ability to work effectively with people and to build teamwork.

This quality allows followers to express themselves without fear and encourages

participation from followers. Followers must like you in order to trust you and therefore

follow you lead.

8. INTELLIGENCE: No leader should ever appear to be daft in the eyes of his or her

followers. They should always come off as being keen and insightful. This is because no

one will follow anyone whom they believe do not know the direction they are headed in

themselves. If you don’t know which way is right from left but you want me your

follower to go right how would you know when I’m going in the right direction?
