Abstract :
In coal mining there is a need for extensive disposal sites or waste dump, due to the
limited area of waste dump hence to fulfill area of waste dump, the swampy area
which lignite soft soil condition should be used . The sudden application of a load
to a saturated soil produces an immediate increase in porewater pressure. The
excess porewater pressure will dissipate, the effective stress in the soil and
settlement will increase. With this lignite soft soil conditions in its natural form is
not suitable to completely bear heavy load from embankment, it is necessary to
enhance, modificate, or increasing soil properties and its bearing capacity to
decrease the expected consolidation settlement with ground improvement. This will
increase the area and the capacity for waste dump and reduce the disturbance around
the waste dump. Two method of ground improvement which expected to be able to
increase soil properties and bearing capacity, that method is Deep Soil Mixing and
Geocell Soil Stabilization. This paper gives the overview and concept of these two
method of ground improvement and the influence of reinforcement over
consolidation settlement in lignite soft soil together with the capacity of the
expected waste dump is calculated in finite element method with RS2; Rocscience
Software. These two method of ground improvement is very applicable for waste
dump embankment which is very suitable for mining industry.
