This term in Year 4 is a very special time for our students as for many,

they will be receiving the Eucharist for the first time through Holy
Communion. A series of steps will be undertaken in the lead up towards
the First Holy Communion. Students will be provided with an insight into
how this special celebration in their lives derived from life of Jesus is one
that can impact their spiritually on a more personal level. I hope this

said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still,

to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the

we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these

who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had

prophets have spoken!

Theology of the Sacrament of Eucharist

 The Sacrament of Eucharist is also known as Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper.
 The purpose of the Eucharist is to receive the Body and Blood, or Bread and Wine, of Jesus Christ. This is a
physical re-enactment of the Last Supper.
 Receiving Jesus through Holy Communion was a means to gradually unite more as a boy.
 The Eucharist symbolises the new covenant which was given by God to his followers. This new sacrament
symbolises freedom from the slavery and sin, with the promise of eternal life.
 According to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, the Eucharist was established by Jesus when he said
the following words
“Take, eat, this is my body. Take, drink, this is my blood. Do this in memory of me”
Unit of Work
Students will undertake a series of lessons over a five-week period from the Coming to
your table unit of work. Each of these lessons are designed to encourage in depth
thinking, thorough understanding and hands on experiences to assist with this. Section
A and B will be taught over a one week period, with Section C being taught over the
remaining three weeks.
Section A: A focus on “Wondering at our bodies which are different” through physical
appearance, differences between people of different countries and races, through
senses, physical skills, different bodies for different ages and God’s own personal love
for us on a personal level.
Section B: A focus on “The Promise of Christian Salvation” through the understanding
that Jesus loves everyone regardless of physical and cultural differences and how
receiving the Eucharist draws people to become closer to Jesus.
Section C: A focus on “Christian Response” through celebrating the Eucharist with reference to the Last Supper,
Eucharistic Symbols of the Bread and Wine, the tow component to Eucharist – Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of
Eucharist, the Consecration and how to receive Holy Communion properly and ways in which those have failed to
behave as Jesus taught.
These three sections provide preparation in the lead up to the Sacrament of Eucharist.

2. Encourage saying grace before or after meals.
3. Open discuss the First Holy Communion and what has been learnt at school.
4. Discussing how God loves us no matter of our differences (physical, cultural)

Concluding Prayer:
Lord Jesus, you showed your love for children by saying ‘Let the children come to me’. Assist us as parents and
teachers to prepare our children for this special meeting with you in the Sacrament of Eucharist. We ask your
blessing of peace and love on us all.

60 minutes with no break.

Seating Arrangements: Please see the notice board displayed in the classroom with all seating
arrangements. All students will be seated at the front in alphabetical order with families sitting behind,

Dress Requirements:
Girls:
- White or ivory dress below the knee or calf height
- White or ivory shoes
- White stockings (exposed legs are not permitted)
- Veil or headpiece
- Gloves are optional
- Jacket or cardigan is optional
- Minimal jewellery
Boys:
- Light or dark coloured suits with jacket
- Enclosed polished shoes in a dark colour
- White, long sleeved, buttoned up shirt with a collar
- Tie in a solid colour
Family Members:
- Smart Dress
- Jeans not permitted
- Appropriate clothing showing little skin

Photographic Arrangements: A photographer will be provided by the school

taking pictures on the day. These can be purchased. Photography is permitted before and after
the ceremony, no flash photography is permitted during the ceremony.

Extra Procedures: Children are welcome but please be mindful of the importance of the ceremony, the
length of time being seated and of any behaviour that may disrupt the ceremony.
All mobile phones must be turned off – do not leave on vibrate.
Wheelchair access is provided. For any inquiries in regards to seating of wheelchairs please find a time after school
to discuss this with me.
