Powtoon Usability Test Findings 3

Introduction
This white paper analyzes the findings of a usability test on Powtoon, a cloud-based website that
allows users to create animated video presentations. Powtoon shares similarities with competing
presentation software, however, it stands out for some of its unique video prensentation features,
including the animation and video tools in the software. The usability test includes twenty tasks
performed on the website’s free version. The tasks are a reflection of versatile tasks users would
encounter when creating their own video presentations through the website. These tasks are
designed to grasp a well-rounded understanding of the website’s software usability.

Test Environment and Equipment

The usability test was conducted in two-hour intervals from March 26, 2018 to March 29, 2018.
The test environment was a quiet, well-lit area with a desk and desk chair. This test environment
allowed for focus on the usability test and also mimicked a similar environment to one daily and
new users would likely use when accessing the website.
The usability test was conducted with the web browser Chrome, version 65.0.3325.181. The
computer used for the test was a 15 inch Windows 10 HP Pavilion laptop. The findings in this
white paper are based on the latest version of Powtoon, updated December 11, 2016.
The usability test was conducted with a Powtoon account specifically created for the test. All
usability tasks related to template features were completed on a single sample template on my
Powtoon user account.

Evaluating Criteria
The twenty tasks completed in this usability test were tested on the following criteria:

Effective: I successfully completed the task.

Powtoon Usability Test Findings 5

Efficient: I completed this task in the most economical amount of clicks, and it took little
time to complete the task.
Engaging: The tools associated with the task were engaging.
Error Tolerant: I was able to undo or correct errors without restarting the task.
Easy to Learn: Software associated with completing the task was intuitive or easy to
learn.

Rating Scale
The five evaluative criteria were rated on the following four-point Likert scale:
Strongly Agree Agree Disagree Strongly Disagree
4 3 2 1

A four-point Likert scale was used to omit neutrality when completing tasks for the usability test.
Based on this scale and the five criteria used for testing the website’s usability, each task can
receive between 5 – 20 points.
Powtoon Usability Test Findings 6

Results
Task 1: Sign up for Powtoon with a free account
To begin the usability test, I had to create my own Powtoon
account. Powtoon’s software cannot be accessed without a
login account. The website homepage has a Start Now and Sign
Up button that are highlighted so users intuitively understand
this is where to create an account. When logging in, the website
offered me the option to sign in with an existing social media
account or create a personal account with my email. After I
signed up, the webpage directed me to my user homepage. The
process of creating an account met the five testing criteria and
received 20 points on the Likert scale.

Figure 1: Sign up page

Task 2: Choose a template theme from Powtoon’s
template gallery
At the top of the user homepage was a ribbon that displayed possible theme choices and a
Templates button. Because the account was new, most of the homepage was blank, allowing for
the ribbon to more quickly gain my attention.

Figure 2: Display ribbon and template button on user homepage

After I clicked the templates link, I was directed to a list of available templates. There was a
variety of themes to choose from
and they were organized by
categories and subcategories,
allowing me to quickly narrow
down choices that interested me.
When I clicked a theme, the
website redirected me to the
editing page with my chosen Figure 3: Template categories and subcategories
theme prepared.
Powtoon Usability Test Findings 7

I encountered difficulty changing a theme choice, and the website forced me to begin a new
presentation if I wanted to select a new theme. Because I could not easily change the theme of
the current presentation I was working on, the task received a 17 on the Likert scale.

Figure 4: Tips & Lists template themes

Task 3: Add a background image to a slide

I chose a blank template to begin testing usability features.
The presentation editing screen showed the currently selected
slide with a dropdown menu of slides on the left and the
editing menu on the right side of the screen. The editing
menu included a template icon and, when clicked, it opened a
gallery for me to view backgrounds by category. Video
backgrounds often lagged, while the image backgrounds
produced more quickly onto my template. I chose an image
background and had no issues loading it to my template. The
time lag from the video backgrounds negatively affected the
testing criteria, and the task received 19 points on the Likert
scale.

and videos gallery

Task 4: Add text boxes and edit content

I clicked the text box icon on the editing menu, and
the text box icon opened a menu with a gallery of
text boxes to choose from. Once I chose a text box
theme, the text box appeared in the center of my
slide. The text box was already highlighted so I could
begin typing a title without additional clicks.
Whenever I wanted to change the content, I only
needed to double click on the text box. The task
successfully met the five testing criteria and received
20 points on the Likert scale.

Figure 6: Text box gallery

Task 5: Change content font size and color
When I selected the text box, the content highlighted and a separate text box menu appeared.
This allowed for a wide array of editing options, including color, size, animation, and embedding
links. Familiar icons associated with the text box,
such as dashed lines and arrows that adjust box
size, allowed me to intuitively learn how to adjust
the text boxes’ width, location, and angle. Because
the text box tool was similar to text box tools in
other software, the task was user friendly, and it
received 20 points on the Likert scale.

Figure 7: Text box editing tools

Task 6: Add a new slide to the presentation

The menu on the left side of the editing screen provided a gallery of
my slides. Beneath the slide was a plus sign icon that allowed me to
add another slide to my presentation with one click. A new slide
instantly became visible, and the plus sign icon moved below the new
slide. The gallery provided a visual representation of how many slides
I had added, and the website was designed to keep users’ slides in an
organized, sequential pattern for more efficient usability. This task
met the testing criteria and received 20 points on the Likert scale.

Figure 8: Add Slide button

Figure 9: Current slide with slide gallery displaying my slides and Add Slide
button

Task 7: Adjust slide length of each slide

The editing page include a timeline beneath the selected slide that allowed me to visualize how
long the slides were automatically set to. The timeline included plus and minus icons that reduce
or increase the slide length. I could click these icons and lengthen or shorten my slides. The
timeline bar offered a unique visual, and the Play button was above the timeline so I could
review my length and adjust it as necessary. Though the tool was unfamiliar, it was intuitive,
engaging, and efficiently helped me complete the task. It received 20 points on the Likert scale.

Figure 10: Timeline beneath the selected slide with icons that adjust slide length

Task 8: Delete a slide from presentation

I moved my mouse over a slide from my gallery of
slides and a garbage icon appeared in the corner of the
slide, representing the option to delete the slide. I could
also right-click the slide from the gallery slides and a
menu would appear with the option to delete it. The
variety of methods available to delete a slide reflects
the website’s flexibility for user preference. The task
met the testing criteria and received 20 points on the
Likert scale.

Figure 11: Two options shown for

removing a slide from a presentation
Task 9: Save a slide to “My scenes”
When I hovered my mouse over a slide in my slides gallery, a three dot icon appeared in the
bottom right corner. When clicked, a small ribbon of five icons appeared. From here, I found the
“My scenes” icon and saved the scene in one click.
The icon associated with the task was
unfamiliar and I couldn’t associate with other
software tools, but it was easy to learn. The
tool itself could be very convenient for
people who need to reuse the same slide for
multiple presentations. This task received 19
points on the Likert scale.

Figure 12: My slides gallery with “My scenes” icon

Task 10: Edit transitions between slides

I found the tool to add transitions conveniently located
between slides in my slide gallery. When I clicked on the
tool, a separate gallery appeared with transition options
organized by category. Each transition included a title of the
transition and an image that represented what the transition
looked like. When I hovered my mouse over a transition
choice, it played a preview of the transition.

Figure 13: Add transition tool

Powtoon Usability Test Findings 11

The transition gallery reflects

the website’s organizational
pattern and attention to user
needs. The website provided
me with a label, image, and
preview of what the transition
was. The task met the testing
criteria and earned a score of
20 on the Likert scale.

Figure 14: Slide transition gallery

Task 11: Add an image from Powtoon’s gallery

The editing menu had no button labeled Images, but instead had four
different types of images to choose from: Characters, Props, Shapes,
and Media. When I clicked an image, it appeared on the selected
slide. The task received 20 points on the Likert scale.

Task 12: Edit image animation

In the editing menu, I navigated to an image from Powtoon’s image
gallery that came with an animation. When my mouse hovered over
the image in the gallery, a separate menu would open that showed Figure 15: Props gallery in
all the available animations of that image. I chose a character image the editing menu
with an animated pose and placed it on my slide. From there, I
could review other poses for that character and change the pose or
create a new character with a different pose. The task met the
testing criteria and earned 20 points on the Likert scale.

Figure 16: Character gallery with a

Task 13: Add a video from Powtoon’s video gallery

I navigated to the media icon in the editing menu and found
two separate media categories: images and videos. The
video category had a variety of short video clips that could
be previewed when I hovered my mouse over the image.
When I began scrolling through the video gallery, my
computer began to lag. This lag time persisted when I added
a video and tried to play it. The video didn't play smoothly
when I previewed it, and it took a noticeable amount of time
to click from the video slide to another slide in my
presentation. The lag time negatively affected task-
usability, and this task received a 17 on the Likert scale.

Figure 17: Media gallery with

Task 14: Adjust the time when content and images and videos
images will appear in presentation
The timeline at the bottom of the selected slide showed me when each image and content box
would appear on the screen. I was able to interact with the timeline by clicking and dragging
each element along the timeline to the second that I wanted the element to appear in my
presentation. The timeline tool
allowed me to complete the task in
quickest, most organized method
possible, and the task received 20
points on the Likert scale.

Figure 18: Timeline with slide elements

Task 15: Create voice-over narration for a slide

The narration tool was appropriately located in the sound icon on the editing menu. When I
clicked on the icon, a separate menu appeared with the options to add music and narration. The
task took little time to complete because of the helpful labels and icons Powtoon used to direct
me to the recording tool. I was able to preview or delete my recording. Unlike the content boxes
and images, I could not choose when I wanted my voice-over narration to begin on a given slide.
Powtoon Usability Test Findings 13

The narration would start automatically from the beginning of

the slide. The narration software in Powtoon was easy to
complete because of the labels, icons, and intuitive buttons
associated with the task. The task earned 20 points on the Likert
scale.

Task 16: Add music to presentation

The sound icon in the editing menu took me to the same gallery
where I completed task 15. When I clicked on the Add Music
button, it provided a gallery of songs provided by Powtoon as
well as the option to import my own music. I could preview Figure 19: Sound menu in the
each song before adding it to my presentation, and it included editing menu
the same tools in task 15 to delete or change the music. The task
received 20 points on the Likert scale.

Figure 20: Music categories Figure 21: Song gallery in “Happy” category

Task 17: Title and save presentation

Near the top of the editing page is the title of the document. I clicked on the default title
“Untitled” and remained it. Beside the title was the Save button that automatically saved my
presentation every five minutes as it progressed. The task met each of the criteria and received
20 points on the Likert scale.

Figure 22: Editing page with cursor over presentation title

Task 18: Return to user homepage and

navigate to saved presentation
After I saved the presentation, I returned to my
homepage by clicking the Powtoon button in the top left
corner of the editing screen. The website opened a new
tab to my homepage. From there, I found my saved
presentation directly beneath the template ribbon under
the header “My Powtoons.” I could edit, duplicate,
delete, or export my Powtoon. The task successfully
fulfilled the five criteria and received 20 points on the
Likert scale. Figure 23: Powtoon button that opens
a new tab to user’s homepage

Powtoon Usability Test Findings 15

Task 19: Export Powtoon presentation to computer as a PowerPoint

From the user homepage, I clicked on the export option and was presented with a list of possible
methods of exporting. After I clicked on the PowerPoint option, it prompted me with a message
saying I’d receive an email with a link to download the presentation as a PowerPoint. Because
PowerPoint and Powtoon don’t share the same tools, some elements of the presentation didn’t
copy over, including animation, music, video, slide transitions, and narration.

Figure 24: Powtoon presentation export options

It was inconvenient and inefficient to pull up my email and download the PowerPoint file from
there. The task required me to step away from the website and to my email. Because of these
qualities, the task received 16 points on the Likert scale.

Task 20: Begin a new presentation with the

storyboard tool
I navigated to the top of my user homepage to the
Storyboard button. The website redirected to the
Storyboard page where I could build a new
presentation design by choosing individual themes
for each slide. I clicked on each blank slide and
added a theme to the slide. Once I completed this
task and hit the Next button, the website redirected
me to the presentation editing page with all of my
themed slides. Figure 25: My user homepage with
Storyboard button selected
Powtoon Usability Test Findings 16

Figure 26: Storyboard page

Unlike the template gallery that requires users to choose a template with a consistent theme, the
storyboard feature let me mix and match themes. This reflects the website’s interest in appealing
to user preference. The task met the five criteria and received 20 points on the Likert scale.

Conclusion
Powtoon is a unique website users can access to create stunning and professional presentations
for a multitude of occasions. The website is flexible with user-preferences and offers multiple
ways tasks can be completed and in multiple orders. Powtoon’s overall score was 388/400, or
97%. The results of this usability test reflect how user friendly, versatile, and technically-enabled
the website is. Below are recommendations that could be made to improve the website’s overall
quality.
Video Lag Time
The most undesirable feature I encountered while conducting the usability test was the video lag
time. Not only did the videos themselves lag, but the video gallery and editing page both lagged
in response to selecting a video for a slide. A video with glitches can damper the credibility of
the presentation, reduce professionalism, and aggravate users when the lag time begins to affect
other elements of the editing page. Though this feature is one of the many unique aspects of
Powtoon, the video gallery should be omitted until the website develops software capable of
supporting videos.
Other elements could also affect the lag time of the videos and effects it has on other elements in
the editing page. This includes aspects in the user’s control, such as web browser and internet. If
the website functions better with a particular browser, it should be stated on the website. While
this may inconvenience users who prefer a specific browser, it could yield higher rates of user
satisfaction if users are aware of the browser preference and heed to it.
Exporting the Presentation
Exporting a presentation on Powtoon requires users to access their email and download the video
from a message sent by Powtoon. This adds an unnecessary step in the presentation process.
Powtoon should re-design its software so it can omit this tedious step and allow immediate
downloading from the website.

allowed me to view all of the templates by category. Once I chose a template, I
was given a visual load time so I knew the website was loading my template
theme. The website would not allow me to navigate back to the template
selection if I chose the wrong template. If I wanted a new template, I would have
to go back to the homepage and navigate to the template themes. My previous
selection would be saved as its own presentation. The load took a while and

Notes
The slide transition tool was easy to find in my slide gallery between slides. The
transition menu had slides organized by category. Each trantision had an image to
associate with the transition as well as a label. When I hovered my mouse over
transition choice, it offered a preview of what the transition would look like. The tool
was well-organized, easy to use, and easy to change.

Some types of images were in the form of animation, such as the character images.
When my mouse hovered over the image in the gallery, a separate menu would
open that showed all the available poses of that character. Animated choices were
limited to less than 10 poses per image.

Notes
The video gallery was easy to navigate to, and the editing tools associated with the
videos were similar to the editing tools for the images. However, when I began
scrolling through the video gallery, my computer began to lag. This lag time
persisted when I added a video and tried to play it. The video didn't play smoothly
when I previewed it.

Notes
The task took little time to complete because of the helpful labels and icons
Powtoon used to direct me to the recording tool. Powtoon provided tools I could use
to preview or delete my recording. Unlike other recording software, Powtoon's does
not have the option to trim audio content. Also, unlike content boxes and images, I
could not choose when I wanted my voice-over narration to begin on a given slide. It
would start automatically from the beginning of the slide.

able to delete and change the song once it was added. When I played through the
entire video, the music combined with the video lagged at the beginning.

browser. This could be confusing to some users or just annoying, as it was for me.

Notes
There were many ways to export the Powtoon presentation. I chose PowerPoint so I
could see which Powtoon features wouldn't copy over. When I exported it, it
prompted me with a message saying I'd receive an email with a link to download the
presentation as PowerPoint. It was inconvenient and requried more time and more
clicks. Because PowerPoint doesn't have animation, the images lost their animation.
The sound did not copy over. The video would not play. The transitions were gone.

Notes
This feature only allowed me to select a template for each slide and add or remove
slides. Whereas choosing from a template gave me a completed presentation where I
only needed to add a few images and content, the story board feature allowed me to
add professionally designed templates to each slide from a variety of scenes. This
gave me the ability to create my own theme from professional scenes. After choosing
all my scenes, I clicked continue and it directed me to the editing page.
