PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM
Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development

6 Empowered by the Spirit Confirmation Human spirit

Overview

‘Empowered by the Spirit’ centres on preparing young students to undertake the Sacrament of Confirmation by developing the inner strength of their human spirit through several learning
activities. The unit begins with understanding the concept of the soul and the experiences in which the soul has. Students are immersed in discussion of right and wrong, and how inner
strength of the soul can guide one to make the correct decisions in life (A1). The students examine key religious figures and how their soul led them to do good in heroic ways (A2). Through
this, the students come to realise that it is God who empowers people to do good (A3). Students then move their focus to Jesus, and how he demonstrated great inner spiritual strength
(B1). The occasions Jesus promised to share the Holy Spirit to his followers in order to help them develop inner strength like his are explored. The Pentecost story is also examined in depth.
From these experiences the students draw connections between the Holy Spirit and the Sacrament of Confirmation (B2). Students then investigate the Christian response to the special
strength of the Holy Spirit. Learning activities involve: recalling stories of others who demonstrated how this strength helped them in their lives (C1); celebrating the Sacrament of
Confirmation (C2); identifying the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how they can be developed further through the Beatitudes (C3); continuing to wonder at their inner spiritual strength, and how
Confirmation will deepen the strengthen God has given to them (C4).

PLANNED ASSESSMENT

Saint/Blessed and the Holy Spirit Presentation

The presentation assesses the learning point: C1.1 Presents major stories of followers of Jesus being strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Students are to research, plan and
present how their Saint or Blessed person was strengthened by the Holy Spirit in a presentation form of their choice. The students must clearly identify and explain a
certain life-event and particular words said by their Saint or Blessed person. Students must make the presentation creative and engaging through images and graphics, as
well as speak in a clear and confident manner. This learning activity also attends to the English content descriptor: Plan, rehearse and deliver presentations, selecting and
sequencing appropriate content and multimodal elements for defined audiences and purposes, making appropriate choices for modality and emphasis (ACELY1710). The
presentation will be assessed using the rubric below.
