Abstract

Home needs always increases with the population growth rate. The number of families who
do not have a house (backlog) is still quite large. In 2003 alone, an estimated 6 (six) million
units on the basis of the BPS 2000 is 4.3 million units. The growth of a new family home to
reach 800,000 units per year. The ability of the local economy is still very limited, so that
approximately 70% of urban households in the category of low-income with income of less
than 1.5 million dollars per month. This low public welfare impact on the emergence of
slums in almost all cities in Indonesia. The main factors of housing slums is due to high
urbanization. Currently, due to the rapid urbanization and the spread of occupation
occupation explosion uneven become a crucial issue that attracted worldwide attention.
According to UN predictions, the next 50 years there are approximately 2/3 of the world
community that will live in cities each - individual countries, including Indonesia. Increased
urbanization causing a domino effect that ultimately lead to huge losses for humanity and the
environment. Population explosion and uneven population distribution is also a factor of the
imbalance between urban and rural area so the meningkatkanya urbanization. The rapid
increase in urban urbanization raises many problems, one of which is the proliferation of
slums in urban areas. Urbanization is influenced by three factors, namely the natural
population growth of urban areas, migration from rural areas to urban areas, and the
reclassification of rural village into an urban village. Projected population of urban areas in
this projection is not done by making assumptions for these three factors, but based on the
difference in the rate of population growth in urban areas and rural areas (Urban Rural
Growth Difference / URGD). However, by making the assumption URGD for the future,
means that this projection indirectly also has to consider three factors. For Indonesia, the level
of urbanization is projected to have reached 68% in 2025. The phenomenon of urban
development that is evident is that the rapid urban growth and widespread impressed, pushed
by the needs of the community. The method used in this research is survey research methods,
ie methods of research conducted by collecting data through in-depth interviews to the
population who live in the suburb of the Musi River in particular citizens lived in the village
5 Ulu. Selection is done by research area purposive.
