1.Show Up! To succeed in this course, you must choose to attend every scheduled class period in its entirety.
If you must miss class you need to provide a written medical excuse, jury duty form, copy of the obituary (death
of an immediate family member only) per student handbook.
2.Your Responsibility: Each student is required to Portal, Email or Call if you plan to be late or absent from
class prior to class. Please include your reason for the absence/tardiness, return date and contact information.
3.Do your work! To succeed in class, you must choose to do your very best work in preparing for each class
session and on all assignments.

4.Be Honest! Your instructors and fellow students expect you to choose to act with integrity in all your classes,
including this one. Please review the student handbook for Virginia Colleges Student Code of Conduct for
more clarification.
5.Cell phones, laptops, iPad, etc. should be turned off and out of sight while in class. (Electronics out during
class time will result in a zero for class participation, and may require student to leave the classroom if s/he
does not comply with classroom rules). Earbuds are NOT allowed during class.
6.Bell ringer activities, quizzes, and in-class assignments CANNOT be made up, unless the student has
appropriate documentation of the absence.
7.Digital work will be completed by the stated “Due Date”. Late submissions will have 40 percent deduction in
grade.
8.Use spell-check for every typed submission. This catches most spelling and grammatical errors.

Course Information
Course Description
In this course, students learn about law and ethics related to health care, pharmacology, infection
control, vital signs, and complementary and alternative medicine. This course is also designed to
develop professional skills and proactive career management. This course includes both classroom
and digital activities such as video, tests/quizzes, simulations, and discussion boards. This course will
include out-of-class work such as reading and writing assignments, practice and practical application
assignments, and projects. A minimum of two and a half hours of out-of-class work will be assigned
per week.

Course Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

 Recognize the impact of ethical behavior in health care


 Explain federal and state health care legislation and regulations
 Demonstrate proper laboratory and office procedures
 Describe the interactions, mechanisms of action, and routes of administration for prescription
and non-prescription drugs
 Explain the impact of complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine
 Demonstrate professional skills that enhance success

Assessment and Requirements


Students will be assessed by a variety of methods including in-class activities,
out-of-class homework assignments, quizzes, exams, projects, or other appropriate methods.

Instructional Methods
Instructional strategies may include lectures, board work, demonstrations, lab activities, classroom
exercises, discussions, practice questions, examinations, reading assignments, field trips, guest
lectures, group projects, and oral presentations. This course may include both classroom and digital
activities such as video, tests/quizzes, simulations, and discussion boards.
