of the movement’s characters: the first affectionately agitated, the second fluent
enough, oscillating between fleetness and cantabile, the third not an exercise in Alfred Brendel
top-speed velocity but a measured, joyous dance.
Not the least remarkable feature of Brahms’s work is that it maintains the
symmetrical sixteen-bar shape of Handel’s theme throughout its twenty-five
variations, and that only on one occasion — the dramatic ninth variation — do
es it allow itself the luxury of a varied, rather than literal, repeat of the theme’s
second half. (Three further variations — Nos.13, 19 and 20 — have a written-out
repeat, but the change affects little other than the music’s register.) Moreover,
even the single variation — No.21 — which forsakes the tonality of B flat in favour
of the key of G minor contains a “hidden” layer in its grace-notes, which trace the
outline of the theme at its original pitch.
Variations 5 and 6 form a linked pair in the minor, the first of them present-
ing a smooth melody over a flowing accompaniment, and the second treating
the same melody as an ingenious canon, given out in subdued octaves. The only
remaining variation in the minor is No.13 — not so much a funeral march, despite
the drum-like “rolled” chords in the bass, as a manifestation of the darker side of
Brahms’s gipsy persona.
