Design Process Management 2
A process needs to be followed when designing a
network to avoid the following problems.

 Failure to meet requirements.

 Creeping requirement.

 Missed deadlines & Budget overruns.

 Dissatisfied end users.

 Dissatisfied management.

Design Process Management 5
Phase 1: Requirement Gathering
 Most crucial phase.
 Means talking to users, managers, and
other network personnel.
 Time consuming.

Chapter 1 - The Network ITT550 - Network Design &

Design Process Management 6
Phase 1: Requirement Gathering
Provide :
 Better view of current network.
 Objective decision-making.
 Ability to plan for network migration.
 Ability to deliver appropriate resources to all
users.

Chapter 1 - The Network

Design Process
Phase 1: Requirement Gathering
Qualities of good requirements.
 Detailed requirements.
 Specific requirements.
 Good requirements techniques.
 Consider both current & future needs.

Chapter 1 - The Network ITT550 - Network Design &

Design Process Management 10
Phase 1: Requirement Gathering
Deliverables:
 Requirements Specification Documents (RSD).
 Record requirements in RSD.
 Validate RSD.
 Once accepted go to next phase.

Chapter 1 - The Network ITT550 - Network Design &

Design Process Management 11
Phase 2: Analysis of the Existing Network
 Analyze existing network architecture &
performance.

 Complements Requirements Gathering phase.

 Requirements show where you need to be.

 Analysis tells where you currently are.

Chapter 1 - The Network ITT550 - Network Design &

Design Process Management 12
Phase 2: Analysis of the Existing Network
Process involved
 Design team must thoroughly analyze existing
network.
 Gather quantitative information (estimation of
storage & network) and quantitative data (traffic
measurements & network management statistics).
 Create traffic specification document.
 Proceed to Logical Design Phase.

Chapter 1 - The Network ITT550 - Network Design &

Design Process Management 13
Phase 2: Analysis of the Existing Network

Deliverables: Traffic Specification Document

 Logical diagram of current topology.
 Estimated traffic volumes and topology.
 Detailed statistics, baseline measurements.
 Report on QOS provided by WAN links.
 List of design constraints.

Design Process Management 14
Phase 3: Logical Design
 Describe what network must do & how it must
perform.
 Specifies how data flows through a network.
 Designer creates logical network structure
based on the requirement specification &
network analysis results.
 Upgrade if current h/w & s/w cannot meet the
needs of new network.
 Integrate if current systems can be reused.
 If not find new system.

Phase 3: Logical Design
Deliverables: Logical Design
 Logical network diagram.
 Addressing strategy.
 Security scheme.
 H/w & s/w component, WAN links
specification.
 Network staff training & hires specification.
 Initial cost estimation for h/w, s/w, services,
personnel, and training.

Phase 4: Physical Design
- Shows how to make logical design work in real
world.
- Creates detailed specification of h/w, s/w, link,
services & cabling.

Deliverables: Physical Design

 Physical network diagram.
 Detailed lists of equipment and parts.
 Cost estimation (h/w, s/w, installation).
 Installation schedule.
 Post-installation testing plan.
 User training plan.

Phase 5: Installation & Maintenance
Installation
 H/w & s/w must be purchased & tested before
installation.
 Any resources for network installation should be
arranged before deployment.
 Designer should participate in network installation.
Maintenance
