Overview of Instructional Unit

Introduction
This unit is a thirteen-day unit on simplifying expressions in exponential form and radical form and identifying the relationship between
exponents and radicals. This unit of instruction will be given during an 8th grade remedial intervention period.

Goals and Objectives

The students in an 8th grade intervention class, without the use of notes, will be able to correctly simplify expressions with exponents and
radicals with at least 80 percent accuracy.

The following is a list of instructional objectives used in this unit plan:

 From memory, students will simplify expressions with exponents of power 2 correctly with at least 80 percent accuracy.
 Without the use of notes, students will apply exponent properties to simplify expressions correctly with at least 80 percent
accuracy.
 From memory, students will simplify expressions with square roots of perfect squares correctly simplify the expressions with at
least 80 percent accuracy.
 Without the use of notes, students will be able to change expressions from exponent form to radical form, and vice versa,
correctly with at least 80 percent accuracy.
 Without the aid of a calculator, students will simplify expressions with radicals using the prime factorization method correctly
with at least 80 percent accuracy.

Instructional Strategies
Throughout the instructional unit, there will be a variety of instructional strategies utilized. A majority of the lessons will begin with direct
instruction to introduce the new content to the learners. The introduction of new concepts will include demonstrations on how to simplify
the various expressions; the instructor will demonstrate various example problems on the SMART Board. Students will be given many
opportunities to demonstrate their understanding through practice problems completed individually and with small groups. Students will
complete practice problems in their notebooks, as well as, on individual whiteboards. Students will also be given the opportunity to use
the SMART Board to show their work to the class.

Schedule of Learning
In this unit of instruction, there will be thirteen lessons in total covering thirteen class periods. Each lesson will last forty-five minutes in
length. The formatting of each lesson includes a pre-instructional activity, content presentation, learner participation, assessment, and
follow-through activities. The following topics will be covered in the instructional unit:
 Introduction to Exponents (1 lesson)
 Exponent Properties (3 lessons)
 Review of Exponent Properties (1 lesson)
 Introduction to Radicals (1 lesson)
 Prime Factorization Method for Simplifying Radicals (1 lesson)
 Connection Between Exponents and Radicals (1 lesson)
 Properties of Radicals (2 lessons)
 Culminating Project (1 lesson)
 Review Game for Exam (1 lesson)
 Exam on Exponents and Radicals (1 lesson)

3
Assessment
During the instructional lessons, where new content is presented, the teacher will make informal observations to check for student
observations; in addition, at the end of each lesson the students will complete an exit ticket with a few questions. This will give the
student an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and for the teacher to check for misunderstandings.

At the end of the unit, students will work in pairs to complete a Prezi presentation project demonstrating their understanding from the unit.
The presentation will include two parts. The first part will contain all the rules of exponents and an example to accompany each rule. The
second part will contain all of the properties of radicals and an example to accompany each of the properties. The project will be graded
based on a rubric. The rubric will include listing all of the exponent and radical properties, providing correct examples for each property,
and creativity and presentation of poster.

In addition to the presentation project, the students will also have an end of the unit summative assessment. The assessment will be
completed individually without the use of notes. In order to score the assessments, I will use the answer key to check student
responses. For students to obtain mastery of the content in this unit, they must receive an 80% or above on the assessment. I will
score the assessment by the total number correct out of the total number of questions.

Materials
For this instruction unit, the instructor will need a copy of the instructional unit’s lesson plans. In addition, the teacher will need copies of
the worksheets, assessments, and answer keys.

For this instructional unit, the instructor will need a SMART Board to present the new content to the learners. Students will need supplies
for lesson activities, including copies of worksheets and materials that are particular to that supplemental activity. In addition, each
student in the classroom will need individual whiteboards, markers, and erasers that will be incorporated in practicing the new concepts.
Students will need access to a computer or iPad to utilize Quizlet and Prezi during particular lessons in the instructional unit.

Step 4: Assessment Appendix A)

Students will constantly be observed during class and tested with practice problems
to observe their understanding of the content. Time:
 45 minutes
Step 5: Follow-Through Activities
The students will then work in pairs on an exponent war activity. This activity will
be similar to the card game war, except the students will each put down two cards.
The first card will represent the base and the second card will represent the
exponent. The students will simplify the expression and the student with the
highest value wins that round and collects all the cards. The game continues until
one student collects the entire deck of cards. While completing this activity the
students will fill out a worksheet that has columns for the base, exponent, and the
simplified expression.

Lesson Plan Summary

To begin the lesson, the students will be introduced to what the components of an exponent are, the base and exponent, and what an
exponent truly represents, the definition. The entire lesson is to help the learners understand this important concept because it will be
extremely critical in the upcoming lessons. Additionally, the students demonstrate their understanding in the follow-through activity.
During the activity, the instructor is actively monitoring the groups to check for understanding and to be available if there are any
questions. The instructor will also provide feedback during this time; this includes encouragement and constructive feedback to help
further develop the skills. In order to demonstrate their understanding in the follow-through activity, students needed instruction prior to
the activity. This process reflects the cognitivist theory. The teacher builds the students understanding and then allows opportunities for
application while the teacher gives feedback to the learners.

the instructions questions. During the content presentation, learners will respond to
practice problems individually and then will discuss them with their table group.
Additionally, the students will be working on the “Cheese-It” activity in a pair or
small group.

Step 4: Assessment
Students will constantly be observed during class and tested with practice problems to observe their understanding of the content.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities

Explain to the students that they will be exploring how you simplify radical expressions. Tell the students that they are to look at the
radical and determine what the radicand is. This value of the radicand will be the number of cheese-its you will need for that
particular problem. The students will gather the correct amount of cheese-its. The instructor will then explain that you are to
construct a square out of the cheese-its. The dimension of the square is what the radical expression reduces to. Start the activity as a
class and complete the first two examples on the worksheet. By doing so, it will help clarify any questions that the students have.
The students work in pairs or small groups to complete the remainder of the worksheet.

Lesson Plan Summary

The instructor will begin the lesson by asking students whether or not they have seen radical expressions before. This strategy will
activate prior knowledge for those students who have seen radicals before and it will increase curiosity of students who have not been
exposed to the concept before. The teacher will introduce the content by explaining the different components of a radical. The students
will practice identifying the different components by using the examples from the introduction. The students will work on an activity to
explore how to simplify radicals. The instructor demonstrates with the students the first two examples then the students work in pairs or
small groups to complete the activity.

on the worksheet to explain how the prime factorization method works. Explain to the students that you make a factor tree of the radicand
and then substitute the prime factorization in the original expression. Show how you can simplify the expression by explaining how the
“squared” factors are similar to the dimensions in the cheese-it activity. Ask the students how they could simplify the expression realizing
that “squared” numbers are equivalent to a dimension of a square. Have the students revisit the problems utilized for the cheese-it activity
and use the prime factorization method. The students may work individually on the worksheet or with their groups. Once students
complete the worksheet, the instructor will review the solutions with the class. Students will volunteer answers and explain their work to
