Wisam Saad Abdulameer ALjabbari 24" Jan 2013 CE1 Real Time Well Test Operation in Libyan Deep Water CE1.1 Introduction The following setion describes my experience and involvement in one of my projects in Schlumberger. During this project, 1 was appointed as Well Test Engineer (Data Acquisition) and my main tasks were to organize successful real time data transmission and real time data interpretation during this well test operation, My client was Hess and the project located in Libyan Ofishore water - Sirt area. Project Started in Oct 2009 and completed by end of Jan 2010. CE1.2Background Real time well testing is one of the fast growing services in the well testing operations, real time well testing services help clients remotely monitor, model, and manage testing operations as they happen. From acquisition to interpretation, these services can help our clients (cilfield operators) make better informed decisions and meet their well test operation objectives. Having all data delivered to expert in their offices saves time and money required to group all experts at the well test area, instead they can see the well test operation data in real time and use it to minimize the ‘operation time (reduce operation cost ) and validate acquired well test data in real time. In 2009 Hess, one of the main operators in the oil and gas industry was approved to drill exploration wells, in Libyan offshore (Sirt Area). ‘Schlumberger was hired to do the well test operation on board Stena forth drilling ship; this was the first Arilling of deep water well in Libya Hess requested schlumberger to do the well test operations in real time on both Hess two wells in Libya during the initial and main flow after well perforation ‘The well test project consist of some sub segment as Subsea control equipments (ST7), downhole control equipments (DST), surface temporary testing equipment (SWT ) and testing data acquisition (TDA). | was part of well test operation team reporting to the project overall supervisor and leading testing data acquisition (TDA) team in this project. T was in charge of the preparation and the operation of data acquisition in real time in the well test operation on board Stena forth drilling ship, My role as the Iead data acquisition was to address the following challenges: CE 1.2.1 — Organize and coordinate between Schlumberger reservoir engineering and client reservoir engineering department CE 1.2.2 — lead real time well test equipments installation on board Stena forth. ‘CE 1.2.3 - Setup operation support center in schlumberger operation base, (real time well test equipment to be used by testing reservoir engineer for real time monitoring). CE 1.2.4- Supervising and managing team of five people during the well test operation. CE 1.2.5 - Coordinate between all involved schlumberger testing sub segments to have clear work plan. CE 1.2.6 — Report project progress to well test operation project overall supervisor during all Operation stages. CE1.3 Personal engineering activity ‘The project life is represented in three main parts stages show how all DART (Schlumberger Data Acquisition and Reporting Transmission Software) and InterACT (schlumberger real time data exchange software) is prepared together with data acquisition operators in Schlumberger Tripoli base. Ax Pre-job (preparation Phase): This is the most crucial step towards a flawless real time well test operation execution. CE 1.3.1- My first task was initially, an introductory presentation is provided to the client reservoir department team to familiarize them with the service and its applications, Client need to be aware of all ‘components in the real time well test operation prior to the operation. All client enquires need to be explained and answered prior to the operation, Real time data transmission setup presented in (Fig, 1) (CE 1.3.2 ~ My second task was using my acquired knowledge and experience acquired during two years of field work as data acquisition engineer, 1 conducted real time data acquisition and transmission theoretical training together with hands on practice to raise my team competency and confident level , ng has been conducted in schlumberger base in Tripoli / Libya. CE 1.3.3 ~ My third task in preparation phase was assigning specific tasks to all my team according to their expertise, capabilities and knowledge. ‘Their roles has been communicated clearly with specific work instruction, two members were assigned per shift with me as overall data acquisition supervisor CE 1.3.4 - Eventually well test program, Down Stem Test (DST) string and Pressure Volume ‘Temperature (PVT) properties are obtained from client to cary out preparations for interpretation applications as: + KAPPA (software setup for test interpretation): Job setup with net interval thickness, porosity, wellbore diameter as well as fluid properties is prepared. + Pipesim (software setup for nodal analysis): Reservoir properties to model the inflow to the node as well as tubing and perforation specifications to model the outflow from the node are entered. Rest Teas GASCatan B28 Bene Fig One So Caner “esineRuneicEnissr FIG 1 ( Real time well test Process Digram) B- During the Job (Operation ) CE 1.3.5 Just before the operation start , a dummy run has been conducted with schlumberger operation support center in Tripoli operation base , real time transmitted data has been streamed through satellite ‘communication, During this dummy run client access to real time streamed data has been tested, client reservoir ability to access well acquired data has been checked and communication between Client reservoir department office & schlumberger operation support center has been established and maintained. CE 1.3.6 ~ By acquiting both electronic transmitters data from surface well test equipments, downhole equipments and by measuring well flow Pressure Volume Temperature (PVT) properties. Please note that surface flow rate data quality check must be done before any interpretation or analysis ccan be performed. CE 1.3.7 - Flow correlation matching was performed to select flow correlation that describes the upward flow in this real time well test job, data from a cleaned up wellbore was available for interpretation and productivity analysis, CE 1.3.8 - Productivity index calculations has been conducted based on downhole flowing pressure against surface flow rates acquired during the flow period after well is cleaned up. CE 1.3.9 — Vertical flow performance curves generation was performed with reservoir tables functionality of Pipesim software, CE 1.3.10 - Nodal analysis has been conducted, that helped us to optimize the flow performance given reservoir and tubing parameters. If reservoir pressure and wellhead or separator pressure values are known, then flow rate ean be calculated based on this differential pressure owing to the pressure gradient correlations and to the reservoir inflow from porous medium across perforations. Fig. 2 shows the preliminary nodal analysis performed with given values in the well test program prior to the test, while Fig. 3 shows the nodal analysis performed after productivity index was re calculated in real time, ‘These two figures show that flow potential of the well in the beginning was underestimated by 9 times while the well could flow at higher rates with significant change in wellhead pressure between choke sizes. Having established actual well deliverability enabled to re calibrate the expected flow rate against wellhead and downhole pressure during test and confitm that the new estimated rates and choke sizes are in Tine with test CE 1.3.11 - Following initial buildup period, quality check of downhole pressure and temperature data has been performed and the continuous flow rate history was synchronized with downhole pressure data. Upon extraction of pressure derivative and interpretation of basic reservoir parameters together with well deliverability calculations From nodal analysis, results were published to client interface using real time Interact software. Eventually, those preliminary data processing results lead to the adjustment of the remaining test sequence and the upcoming production log operation. C- Post Job (close out) CE 1.3.8~ After the end of the well test operation, QA/QC of entire well test acquisition including tenks, separator, wellhead, downhole data, well test interpretation was finalized by both me and testing reservoir ‘engineer, data validation report, which was comprised of QA/QC of all downhole gauges and the results of well test basic interpretation, was added into the annex of the well test report This report was prepared to ensure the integrity and quality of well test results based on continuous flow rate history and downhole gauge pressure data acquired by well testing services CE 1.4 Summary ‘Thanks to team work and excellence in execution attitude by all involved sub segments (DST, ST7, SWT and TDA) Job done safely and successfully with no lost time, client had achieved all his well test operation objectives with minimized operation time especially when we know that Stena forth rig cost more than 100K USD/day, using real time well test helped client to reduce the well test operation by ‘more than 7 hours allowing a saving 300K USD [ was happy to see that my contribution helped client to achieve his goals and promote my company as industry leader with great record of excellence jobs, As this part of the well test operation project was assigned to me, on the end of Feb 2010 as recognition for my contribution in this project, I was promoted to senior well test field engineer position, CE2 Rumaila Field Multi phase well test campaign CE2.1 Introduction: ‘The following section deseribes my experience and involvement in one of my projects in Schlumberger. During this project, I was appointed as Multi Phase metering Well Test Ficld Supervisor in charge of one of the four schlumberger multi phase metering mobile units and my main tasks were to organize successful well test campaign, My client was Rumaila Operations Organization (ROO) and the project ocated in South city of Iraq— Basra, Project Started in Mar 2011 and completed by end of Jun 2011 CE2.2 Background Rumaila field is 3" largest oil field in the world, itis located in the south part of Irag, and after end of the second gulf war Iraq government awarded this field to BP (50%) and CNPC (25%) under service contract, to develop this giant field This joint bidding by BP and CNPC formed Rumaila Operation Organization (ROO) to run the development operation. ‘The conventional method for handling multiphase flow uses systems that separate the gas, which is seat through a dedicated gas line, from which are pumped out through a separate line. More efficient systems use multiphase pumps that allow the gas, water, and oil to be pumped from the well site to the processing facility without separation. ‘New technology has been introduced by schlumberger that accurately measures rapid variations in three hase fluids, including slug flow, foams, and stable emulsions that were previously difficult to measure. The capability to meter multiphase flow in real time increases operational efficiency, saving both time and money. ROO had asked Schlumberger testing services to perform Multiphase Metering campaign in Rumaila field using schlumberger multiphase technology to measure those wells flow rates (Oil, Gas and Water) schlumberger customized and assigned for mobile multi phase metering units for this operation. {was the field supervisor for one of those four units with total four personnel under my supervision, T report to schlumberger Field Service Manage (FSM) in Schlumberger Basra operations base, My duties include:~ CE 2.2.1 - Perform Well Testing engineering and supervisory works required for successful, cost effective and safe implementation of production well testing activities. son with client test engineer. CE 2.2.2 - Perform Well Testing operations surveillance duties in elose li CE 2.2.3 - Monitor and report all Well Testing activities and results. CE 2.2.4 - Ensure compliance with Schlumberger and Rumaila Operation Organization (ROO) health, safety and environmental requirements, CE 2.2.5 - Participate in risk assessment activities, including HAZIDs and HAZOPs at designing stage, CE 2.2.6 —Post processes acquired multi phase meter date and prepare final well test report. (CE 2.2.7 - Reviews and appraises the performance of my crew, consistent with performance management objectives in a fair and consistent manner. CE 2.2.8 ~ Attend and represent schlumberger well test service in client meetings and during post job assessment, CE 2.3 Personal engineering acti Project started when ROO requested Schlumberger to do the job, Schlumberger Field Service Manager asked me to be part of this project by leading one of our four assigned land mobile multi phase metering units, ‘Through Project preparation stage meetings with client, we managed to got client scope of work and his. operation objectives and expectations; the use of mobile units was selected as best option to achieve client needs as using these mobile units will minimize the mobilization — demobilization time with more flexibility to do more than one well per day. CE 2.3.1 - I started by reviewing technical data sheets and drawing with client test engineer (for the area ‘where my unit will work), reviewing possible hazards during the operation with all involved parties (Sub- contractors, suppliers) and coordinate with all departments to get the best possible outcome, HAZID and HAZOP meetings has been conducted to discuss the operation potential risks, I was Schlumberger testing representative during those meetings. CE 2.3.2 - The operation simulation has been conducted to see the potential flow rates expected, identify equipments and pipe required work pressure rate, this hes been done by me using schlumberger simulation design software (Archtiest and Vx advisor. CE 2.3.3 ~The wells were cleaned up and tested through the permanent completion and Xmas Tree, the pressure from the downhole geuges in each well was transmitted directly to the well test cabin using permanent gauge installed in the well. ‘The bottom hole pressure data was used not only for transient interpretation, but also to control the testing operation. The well clean-up was performed by incrementing the drawdown on the sand face in steps of 2 103 bars maximum to decrease the risk of damaging the sand control completion. Should the cake or formation collapse onto the sand contro! hardware, the well productivity index (PN) would degrade, and possibly the sand sereens would erode, which would require an intervention. ‘The pressure steps were designed to last between 4 to 8 hours, depending on the duration required to get stability. The time required to reach plateau production, between 3,000 and 8,000 bopd, was about four hours. The complete control of this process was important for the wells completed with gravel-pack, Data validation during the test operation has been conducted at the well site prior to send well test data to client. CE 2.3.4 ~ by supervising, monitoring and recording of the flow rates and parameters during the operation, Full record of the flow periods throughout the clean up and mainflow period CE 2.3.5 - Continues monitoring of well flow is critical as change in well condition can be safety issue especially if sand production is expected. CE 2.346 - Real time metering of schlumberger multiphase meter data and real time data validation ‘conducted during all the well test operation, each well metering period can range between 3hts 10 10 hrs depending on client well test objectives. CE 2.3.7 Collect representative surface oil , water and gas samples has been conducted , samples has been sent tothe client lab for analysis , useful fluid properties can be measured using those samples. CE 2.3.8 — Well problem diagnosis. On well102 Production Log Test (PLT) and well test were performed to validate the well completion. This well was expected to be a very high potential producer. It was critical to obtain a proper clean up and evaluation ofits performance, At the start of the clean up downhole completion valve did not fully open. ‘The first part of the test confirmed the problem although the completion fluid had been fully produced, the Production Index (PI) remained below client expected value. Slick line and coil tubing operations were performed to open the down hole valve fully and to perform the Production Log Test . the flow showed an increased productivity of the well. The real time data from the Multi phase Flow Meter combined with the down hole gauges helped to identify the problem and helped the decision process on the well site CE 2.3.9 ~ By working together with my team and the field service manager in Basra , I was able to define the well site preparation needed and plan logistie scope as input to the basis for preparation document at early planning stages , as all well site location needed to be cleared for test purposes. (CE 2.3.10 - As Irag considered a high security risk country , American army was in charge of the security in Rumalia oil field area during this project time, local security teams escort were required for personel safety. Due to those facts, Specific procedures have been communicated during pre-operation meetings, each well site need to be certified as explosion risk free area with specific marks showing area borders. One of my main tasks was to make sure that we work in safe environment by coordination between our security team and our client security officer, Certification should be issued for each well site prior to any ‘mobilization with our security team risk daily update, this made it easy for us to decide if itis safe to do the job. CE 2.3.11 - Specific emergency planed had been in place, plan has been issued and revised by our security team in Basra operation base, I was responsible of communicating this emergency plan to my team and make sure itis understood by all of them, weekly and monthly drill conducted to make sure all personnel are trained properly to follow the emergency plan in case of emergency. CE2.4 Summary During this project, me and my team did 37 well test in Rumaila field with no operation lost time and no safety incident. Client objectives of those well tests were all achieved as client knows those wells (cil-gas-water flow rates, flowing pressure, flowing temperature, water cut, produced solid rate and type if any, produced oil properties and produced gas properties. Plans have been made depending on our validated data to develop those well productions in order to optimize their production. ‘Thanks to team work sprit in my team and their commitment toward safety and excellence service qui ‘we managed to complete the project with good safety and quality record. 1 was transferred to Malaysia to be part of schlumberger multi phase metering support team in south east asia supporting operations in (Malaysia, Brunei and Philippine). CE 3 Use of Lean methodology to reduce non productive time CE 3.1 Introduction: ‘The following section describes my experience and involvement in one of my projects in Schlumberger. During this project my position was project supervisor. Project objectives were identifying and eliminate / reduce any waste in the multi phase metering operation process, The main targeted areas were Job preparation phase and post job maintenance phase. The use of Lean approach as tool to improve this process was one of my service quality suggestions that have been approved by my line management. ‘My client in this project is my company and the target is to save any wasted (time, money) during this process, Project implemented in Malaysia ~ Labuan operation base early Mar 2012 and completed in Oct 2012, CE 3.2 Background In schlumberger we are encouraged to improve and develop our process all the time in order to increase ‘our operations efficiency and continuously improve our service quality. have noticed that we are going through allot of waiting lost time in our multi phase well test operation in Preparation & post operation stages, I suggested and initiative to reduce this wasted time during this process. AS Multi Phase Flow Metering (MPFM) service demand increasing in south east asia with more ‘opportunities in the future, the competitive business environment in which Schlumberger operates makes quality of our service (excellence in executions) a proven key differentiator , To mainiain this edge we must continue to evaluate and enhance our internal systems, procedures and processes. One of the key factors in the delivery of quality service is by ensuring proper pre job preparation, post job ‘maintenance and accessories / spares control procedures. Applying LEAN tools to enhance our daily activities efficiency will help us deliver better MPFM service to our clients. The Lean Initiative is a change management initiative designed to transform our existing processes into @ future state processes that fully utilizes Lean methodology for achieving a step change in efficiency and quality. Lean focus on improving process by eliminating waste , while the use Six sigma approach focus ‘on process precision and accuracy by reducing the variation. We can start with Lean to eliminate the waste and use six sigma to sustain and reduce the variation in the products - services in the future, Waste examples Training not tied to competency and activity Equipment op-check bottle neck, Red tagged assets not promptly repaired. Multiple data entries. Poor idle asset visibility Defects/ Rework Poor workflow in base. Poor use of utilization of personne! talent 9. Engineers waiting for work shop availability to check the equipment, 10. Stand by equipments: wait to get the spare parts- Unplanned maintenance, 1. Poor design of work shop or non efficient process. 12. Equipment stored in the location that has no job plan In order to improve MPFM service quality, I proposed a project that apply LEAN methodologies (VSM, $8) allowing Labuan base to improve and optimize MPFM resources usage to maintain excellent ser quality and reduce non productive time as one of waste types. Lean tools used during this project are: ‘VSM: Value stream mapping is one of the traditional Lean tools that allow us to see both the process flow of a product or service. Value stream map is the primary assessment tool of Lean practitioners and it is used to identify waste in and between processes. A value stream is all of the actions and process steps, both value add and non-value add are required to create a product or service. 58: it is @ systematic method to improve and sustain workplace organization. 5S is not only about housekeeping, itis about process productivity, efficiency, effectiveness, and waste removal as itis about housekeeping. 5S is one of the foundation principles of Lean thinking and is a prerequisite or first step for further continuous improvement. The 58's refer to Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain, ‘The scope of this project will help to improve the efficiency in current job preparation, Post Job maintenance, and accessories tracking and storage process in Labuan base. ‘As I suggested this improvement, I was assigned to be in charge of this project. My duties CE 3.2.1 —Map the current process using Lean tool (VSM). CE 3.2.2 — Identify waste (time, inventory ...ete) in the current process. CE 3.2.3 ~ Assess the current provess stage by stage to identify waste type and sources. CE 3.2.4~Come up with solution to eliminate the waste and develop new process. CE 3.2.5 - Sustain and monitor the new process use lean tool (59). CE 3.3 Personal engineering activity ‘This project will highlights the importance of understanding Schlumberger working environment and the rule of SLB personnel in achieving and maintaining high service quality CE 3.3.1 - Use of Lean approach to represent and improve current process. ‘When creating a value stream map, the map is a means to an end and not the end itself. The end is to improve or mect a business objective. I started with the business objective that we are trying to improve and then developed the value stream map of the processes that support this business objective. Our business objective is improve our personnel and equipments utilization , that mean more revenue as the equipment can do more job while our professional people spend less time in the base and more time in the field generating revenue. ‘The VSM should align with customer expectations in terms of cost, quality, delivery, ete, for the products and services that we deliver. Important factor in the successful VSM mapping is the management support, my project was sponsored by east asia quality manager, as the process can be affected by area business polices. CE 3.3.2 - Sort, organize and group our current MPFM accessories in to Instrumentation Kit sets, to ‘minimize the risk of damage during transportation, preparation waste time, professional presentation of accessories and assigned specific storage area. CE 3.3.2.1 - The first S is (Sort), This is where I started to sort what is not needed and remove it from the workshop. Most people save everything for fear that there is a small possibility that they may need the future. I stored those items in specific store near by our workshop. I kept only items that have been use daily at the workshop properly stored in lacked tool boxes. ‘That helped to improve the space use in the work shop and reduce wasted time fo locate or move tools in the workshop. i =Give, sell oF throw away “Stora — XX Nouneedemiomene | tikes — | gy lt, ‘CE 3.3.2.2 - The second $s (Set in order), Here are some of the tasks that have been implemented based ‘on my plan with the help of my team in the base. 1. Plan an optimum layout for the workshop area. 2. Physically reconfigure the area to match the planned layout by repositioning some racks in the work shop to match the new planned layout. 3. Determined the best locations for tools, Ik sets, work aids, and other small items, we marked and labeled these locations to be more visibility 4. Putting plan to move the items close to their points of use, and ensure that heavily used items are placed near primary work locations while less used items are placed further away. CE 3.3.2.3 - The third $ is (shine or clean the equipment and work spaces). Cleaning is not only about having nice work environment, itis about being able to determine when a non-standard condition exist such as missing equipment, poor quality connections, excess wear, cracks, and leaks. ‘While doing that two tool storage racks have been fixed to the work shop wall based on the observations made through the cleaning process as potential rack fall risk has been noticed. CE 3.3.2.4 ~ The fourth $ is (Standardize), In standardization, we decided what needs to be done on a regular basis to maintain the results obtained fiom the $8 effort, Making “Standardize” checklist that details all of the 5S results in each of the first three S's and decide who should be responsible for each checklist and when. CE 3.3.2.5 ~The fifth S is (Sustain). Standardization S is important to ensure that the gains from the 5S effort are sustained. It is also important to internalize the results until they become habitual. CE 3.3.3 - Implementation of MPFM Min-Max concept in Labuan testing store to reduce “waiting on spares “time. By reviewing our operation manuals and our maintenance guidelines with the help of Labuan operation base store man , I came up with list of most frequent used / ordered spares and their annual consumption average, Consulting our operation manager of the allowed store value cost limit , spares quantities and types has been decided. This will allow availability of needed spares which will reduce wasted time while waiting for spares, still high value spares which can’t be stored in the store due to high cost, spares order need to be planned and ordered by each job supervisor / coordinator in the job preparation phase. CE 3.3.4 - Implement MPFM maintenance tool set with assigned specific storage area. CE 3.3.5 - Implementing local calibration check set in Labuan, this set will save minimum 15 days / transmitters set/ Year (shipping and waiting on calibration time which is done by contractor calibration lab), CE 3.3.6 - Implement local MPFM job preparation check list to cover all our local jobs specific requirements, this list will help junior team members to perform job preparation tasks in more convenient professional way. CE 3.3.7 - Implement Pre job — Post job Process map to sustain this new process and make it standard practice for Labuan MPFM crew. CE 3.3.8 - Increase testing lab technician and Labuan MPFM junior team members’ proficiency by conducting training on the use of MPEM transmitter’s calibration check kit tool and checking process. CE 3.3.9 - shared our project experience with other location as part of schlumberger knowledge sharing program, PRHUNT OFLE Fig 4 (Current Process Map) - Potential Improvement aress identified > Pepe Teapatten se > Propo alban Eguiects. > iatonanttn Set Coe > La Posorrl exirg > acossces Manas Pose, > Span Aa. Through constructive feedback and continuous training results were achieved, the non produetive time hhas been decreased by 81.6 % with total saving of 96K USD. Procedures has been put in place to maintain improvement made using Lean (5S) tool (Sort, Set in order, shine, standardize, sustain). The ideal result is zero non productive time; so there is stil room for future improvement to reduce our non productive time and enhance client service delivery quality variation using Six sigma approach. {I'm proud with my achievement and we already shared our project experience with other location as part of schlumberger knowledge sharing program.
