WHAT IS THE COST OF HOMOSEXUALITY?

The invasion of the gay way


of life is what many
Singaporeans are concerned
with. Is this concern
justified? What impact would
the legitimatizing of the gay
life have on the society of
tiny Singapore? As
Christians we cannot afford
to turn our backs on an issue
such as homosexuality. This
is an important issue not
because we are
Singaporeans and it affects
our society, although these
are valid reasons. I believe
that the greater reason why Christians must take a strong stand on this is because of
the clear teaching from God’s Word on homosexuality.

A Mind-set of Relativism

Homosexuality as an alternate lifestyle is one of the symptoms of relativism. Today,


there are few moral absolutes, if any, that our children can cling onto to live their lives.
With this latest attack on the bastion of our society, namely the family, Singapore may
soon join the ranks of many nations and fall by the way side if she does not take a
strong unyielding stand against homosexuality as an alternate lifestyle. If the price of
economic prosperity is moral decay then do you not think that it is too costly?

The moral foundations that this country is built upon all these decades can be eroded by
one fell stroke if we let down our guard and allow this trend of relativism to enter in our
society. Situational ethics will replace right and wrong. It is right only when you say it is
right and likewise the issue of wrong! Our children will tell lies when it suits them
because expediency and self-preservation dictate their moral conduct!

As Christians, the absolutes we cling onto to are not negotiable for they are given to us
by God. They are embedded in the very Word of God. The Ten Commandments
succinctly summarize for all Christians what God expects of us as we conduct ourselves
in this world. If we break His apodictic laws, then we sin and we are condemned by

Him. We will stand and be judged by Him one day. There is no escape. “And as it is
appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Hebrews 9:27.

Marriage under Siege

Marriage was ordained by God before sin came into this world. Marriage was meant to
be sacred and beautiful between a man and a woman whom God had created. Within
the confines of this relationship, children are brought up to become upright and
balanced citizens. But when man turned Holy Matrimony into sin, he undermines the
very foundation of his home and his society begins to die. Immorality, sexual perversion,
fornication, and adultery are sins that have already destroyed many homes.
Innumerable number of children has become half orphans by a rise in divorce.

To legalize the gay lifestyle in our small country would be causing families to self-
destruct. Children will soon have two same sex parents, if you can call them parents at
all! Who is the father or who is the mother? The entire family structure would be turned
upside down. A society is only as strong as the family unit. Families must be protected
at all costs. To put the family ties and bonds in jeopardy is a legacy we cannot afford to
pass on to our children.

God Condemns Homosexuality

The strongest argument against


the homosexual life style is the
condemnation by God of this sin
as revealed to us in Holy
Scripture.

The judgment of God to every


born again Christian on this issue
is very real and clear. The Bible
says in 1 Corinthians 6:9, "Know
ye not that the unrighteous
shall not inherit the kingdom of
God? Be not deceived: neither
fornicators, nor idolaters, nor
adulterers, nor effeminate, nor
abusers of themselves with
mankind." The person’s
salvation is put into doubt if he
says he is a Christian and
remains as a homosexual. Some misguided pastors and theologians have tried to water
down the Word of God by saying that you can be a homosexual and a Christian at the
same time so long as you do not practice the act of homosexuality. Such kind of man
pleasing teaching is not helpful or truthful. It is like telling someone that it is alright to
lust after a person in his heart and mind so long as you do not commit the actual act of
adultery or fornication. You have not sinned against God, so they argue! But Jesus
states very clearly and uncompromisingly in Matthew 5:28, “But I say unto you, That
whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her

already in his heart.” From God’s perspective sin is sin. If you lust in the heart it is as
good as sin in God’s eyes. To tell a person that he can be a homosexual at heart but do
not do the act is to deny the truth and live a lie.

God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because from the youngest to the oldest and the
richest to the poorest, they committed the sin of fornication and homosexuality. "Even
as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving
themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an
example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." Jude 1:7. The sin of
homosexuality has permeated throughout the entire cities of that region that God had to
destroy all of them. The evidence is the present Dead Sea in Israel. This is a warning to
all of us. Homosexuality is a sin that infects and affect across the whole spectrum of
society. It does not remain indoors or within one family.

As obedient Christians to God’s Holy Word, we have no choice but to stand against the
life style of homosexuality. This is not an alternate lifestyle for our children to choose
from. It is a lifestyle condemned by God in the Bible. It is sin! God calls this lifestyle an
abomination. "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is
abomination." Leviticus 18:22.

Like all sinners homosexuals need the truth of God. Homosexuals need God’s love and
help, not our misguided condoning of their lifestyle. The Bible teaches us to love all
sinners including homosexuals. But the Bible also teaches us to condemn sin, because
sin destroys lives. The Christian’s love must always be in truth. Is it love, when I keep
silent and allow you to walk into a hole knowing that you might break your leg or die? Is
it love, when I see a house on fire and keep silent? Is it love, to keep silent and allow
the SARS virus to spread all over the world and destroy lives? Our government knows
this well when extremely stringent measure involving millions of dollars were spent in
preventing this deadly virus from spreading. The stringent measures were not popular
but necessary. Many in hospital died lonely deaths because of these measures! Is it not
out of genuine love for her citizens that our Government has taken such a strong
stance? Likewise it is out of genuine love that Christians take a biblical stand against
the sin of homosexuality. To keep silent and allow this deviant and sinful lifestyle to
become an acceptable lifestyle would not be love but hate. Amen.

“Pray Against the Gay Agenda”
We have been told that Singaporeans should be more tolerant to gays
(homosexuals) because we don’t want creative-bohemian-gay foreign talents to by-pass
us. They are the relatively mobile foreign talents that Singapore desperately needs to
boost its talent pool to ensure success in the creative services sector e.g. biotechnology
and biomedical sciences. It’s all about Singapore’s economic survival – but at the
expense of a serious threat in bringing down the walls of our traditional family values,
which form the building blocks of Singapore’s society. More importantly, this move has
challenged the practice of biblical principles. If we do not stand firm, Singapore will soon
become a city of sin and gay – Sin-gay-pore! Be warned that “for this cause God gave
them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use
into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural
use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men
working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of
their error which was meet.” (Romans 1:26-27) God is still on the throne and He will
punish!
The resurrection of the Sodom (Gay) agenda in recent history can be traced back
to the Wolfenden Report published in the UK in 1957. The Committee was chaired by
John Wolfenden (1906-1985), previously headmaster of Uppingham and Shrewsbury
schools, who subsequently become the Vice Chancellor of Reading University in 1950
and later, Director of the British Museum. Other members of the
Committee included a consultant psychiatrist, the chairman of
Uxbridge magistrates court, the vice-president of the City of Glasgow
Girl Guides, a Scottish Presbyterian minister, a professor of moral
theology, a High Court judge, a Foreign Office minister, and the
Conservative MP for Putney. The Committee met for the first time on
15 September 1954. Three years later, their work – “Report of the
Departmental Committee on Homosexual Offences and Prostitution”
(or The Wolfenden Report) was published on 3 September, 1957. Of
the 13 members of the Committee who had served for the full three years, 12
recommended that homosexual behaviour between consenting adults in private should
no longer be a criminal offence. Amid strong public debates over the years, the gay
community grew uncontrollably – infesting families and churches. Since then society
has spiralled downwards spiritually. The UK has committed a grave sin by pulling down
the fences of traditional family values and supported the gay movement. Singapore
should take note, be warned and not repeat this grave error – otherwise, the
consequences can be most devastating.
America has also given approval to the gay movement. Read this and I quote –
“Now, therefore, I, William J. Clinton, President of the United States of America, by
virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do
hereby proclaim June 2000 as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. I encourage all
Americans to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities
that celebrate our diversity and recognize the gay and lesbian Americans whose many
and varied contributions have enriched our national life.” President George Bush (said
to be relatively traditional) cannot stop this because he needs the support of the gay
community in the next elections. Sadly, the gay agenda has become intertwined with
politics.
Many research findings are biased in favour of the gay movement. The fact is
that even homosexual activists in the USA are abandoning the ‘genetic’ argument

because extensive research does not conclusively support the theory of biological
causation. The gay movement has a strong agenda to push for gay acceptance to
ensure that their alternate lifestyle be allowed to continue which is sin against God. The
world needs an absolute yardstick for morality which must be God’s inspired, inerrant
and infallible Word, and not man’s human perception of relativity.
However, like it or not, Singapore has been embracing almost everything
American – McDonalds, Hollywood, the University system and even the gay movement.
We must pray for God’s mercies. FCMers – the time has come for us to pray hard, to
pray for our nation, to pray for our families and to pray for the church. “Be sober, be
vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about,
seeking whom he may devour:” 1 Peter 5:8
Remember how God dealt with Sodom and Gomorrah. The wickedness of their
inhabitants brought down upon them fire and brimstone from heaven, by which they
were destroyed. These cities and their awful destruction are recorded in the Scriptures
for our learning. (Deuteronomy 29:23; 32:32; Isaiah 1:9,10; 3:9; 13:19; 2 Peter 2:6) No
trace of them or of the other cities of the plain has been discovered; so complete was
their destruction!
We must pray therefore for our nation – for God’s mercy and a government with
high standard of morality as laid down in God’s Word. Pray for the gays that they
may repent of their sins and be saved in the Lord. Christ is their only hope as is
ours. We must not surrender to the gay agenda but rather pray against it that God
in mercy may intervene!

FCM COMBINED MEETING


SEPTEMBER 2003
Greetings in the blessed name of
the Lord. We thank God for the blessed
FCM combined meeting on 5th
September at Calvary BP Church
(Pandan). By the grace of God, besides
the regular FCMers who came, there
were many new faces and several
alumni members who joined us.
O what joy it was to spend an
evening away from school. We were
actually looking forward to fellowshipping
with like-minded brethren at this FCM
combine meeting. Prayers answered, we
even got to know a few new brethren
over lighthearted conversations during
dinner. It was a meaningful time of
fellowship, encouraging and edifying one
another. Indeed how good and how
pleasant it is for brethren to dwell

together in unity!
After having a wonderful meal graciously prepared by the poly FCMers, we
gathered at the conference room for a time of spiritual refreshment. The message for
the evening was “Genesis of the FCM and its Outlook,” by Dr Tow Siang Hwa. Dr Tow
began by sharing the history of the FCM (Fundamental Christian Ministry). FCM was
formally known as VCF (Varsity Christian Fellowship). It was founded by Dr Tow and
team during his university days, back in the 1950s. It was his burden for a fellowship
group where university students like himself can grow spiritually in the Word of God.
However in the span of twenty years, VCF fell away due to its unbiblical compromise.
“Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye
withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the
tradition which he received of us.”- 2 Thessalonians 3:16. Therefore, as it has always
been the will of God to withdraw from a fellowship that has departed from sound
doctrine and practice, Dr Tow took a crucial step and set up FCM. Till today, it has been
the Lord’s working and preserving hand that FCM has grown beyond NUS to other
tertiary institutions.
“Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been
taught, whether by word, or our epistle.” -2 Thessalonians 3:15. It is important that
we continue to study and meditate upon the Word of God. As Dr Tow ended off by
mentioning the song “Maybe today”, it caused us to reflect on our faithfulness in service
for the Lord. The Lord’s return is nearer than we think. May the Lord find us faithful till
He comes!
Following the message was a time for prayer and sharing within our individual
FCM groups. Thank God for this opportunity where we can bear the burdens of our
fellow brothers and sisters in Christ by praying for them. “Bear ye one another’s
burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”- Galatians 6:2 Even as we seek the Lord
humbly in prayers, the Lord is in the midst, hearing us.
Indeed, we have
gained many precious truths
from the message and have
been much blessed by this
combined meeting. God
willing, we look forward to
the next combined meeting.
Till then, may we continue to
be steadfast in His Word,
“That ye might walk
worthy of the Lord unto all
pleasing, being fruitful in
every good work, and
increasing in the
knowledge of God”-

Individual groups
1. Problems: Bringing people into FCM. Setting a prayer list? FCM bible study

2. Improvements/solutions: Organizing informal outing to orientate newcomers. Date


for FCM retreat has set at 25-27th December. Poly FCM be in charge of the

3. Timing: Suggestions for breaking fellowship into smaller groups during prayer time

NUS/SMU FCM Gospel Rally 2003
Blind faith or Saving faith? That
was the question that was posed to
both the FCMers as well as the
friends that had joined us for the
gospel rally. This year, the gospel
rally organized by NUS/SMU was
held on 19th September with Rev
Jack Sin (Pastor of Maranatha BP
Church) as the speaker.

“The fruit of the righteous is a


tree of life; and he that winneth
souls is wise.” Proverbs 11:30 As
William Arnot said, “To win an
immortal from sin and wrath to
hope and holiness – this is honourable work, and difficult. It is work for wise men and
we lack wisdom.” Indeed we lack wisdom, from seeking the courage to invite non-
believing friends to striving to always maintain a good testimony at school. But God has
promised that if any of us lack wisdom, and if we ask from him, he shall give it to us
(James 1:5). How comforting! We met on two occasions, once on a Wednesday
morning and the other on the day itself to pray for the friends that were coming that
night. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6

Rev Jack started by asking if we believe that Sir Stamford Raffles founded Singapore
and we having studied the history of Singapore, all nodded our heads. Following that he
questioned why we did when we had never seen him before – is it not by faith?
Subsequently, he presented to us the discoveries of men in the scientific and historic
realm and compared them with the Bible. For
example, it was only in 1522 that men
realized that the earth was round which was a
few hundred years ago but in Isaiah 40:22 “It
is he that sitteth upon the circle of the
earth…” was written in the B.C (Before
Christ) period which was thousands of years
ago! Personally, it was just remarkable to see
the links between Science and Christianity
and it revealed to me once again how
awesome our God is. One cannot help but
marvel at the wisdom and power of God
which makes me ashamed of myself when I
think of the numerous times I placed my trust
in men rather than God, our Creator.

I’m sure many of us FCMers present that


night have heard the gospel message
preached umpteen times before but I am sure
just like any message, we walk away feeling

blessed. Gospel messages like these are not just meant for our non-believing friends,
it’s for us too. They help to rekindle the relationship with our first love, provide an
assurance that our God neither changes nor fails. “For I am the LORD, I change not;”
(Malachi 3:6) and most importantly, having being so blessed by God’s goodness,
reminds us to share this good news with others. This baton is meant to be passed.

It was only by the grace of God that everything went on smoothly - from the provision of
the Creation Magazines at low costs to the preparation of food. Although we cannot be
certain if any seeds were sown or any seeds sown were reaped that night but we do
know that God in his own time will bring it to pass according to his will. “To every thing
there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” Ecclesiates 3:1

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift
of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 The Christian
Faith, as this verse clearly spells out, is one that does not require us to do anything,
instead it has already been do(ne) for us. One just needs faith. The summary of the
gospel message can be literally found in the word gospel itself: God’s Offer of Saving
Power unto Everlasting Life. And the steps to being a Christian are easy as ABCD:
Accept Christ, Believe what the Bible says, Confess and repent of sins and Devote your
life to follow him.

Are we willing to devote our lives to him? Are we able to respond the same way Simon
and Andrew did when Jesus said, “Come ye after me, and I will make you to become
fishers of men. And straightway they
forsook their nets and followed him.”
Mark 1:17-18

May we armed with these little interesting


acronyms shared by Rev Jack, together
with experiences where we had a taste of
God’s goodness and grace and with His
word pass this baton on. Delay It Not!

FCM Retreat 2003
I greet all of you in the blessed name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. How have
all of you been keeping?

Firstly, allow me to share a personal testimony. I first joined FCM about a year ago. I
was still a young believer then and was having problems with my prayer life. I thank
God that the theme of the previous FCM retreat was on “Prayer”. Through the hearing
of God’s Word preached by Rev. Quek Suan Yew, I was able to gain many valuable
lessons on prayer. I was also blessed by the sweet fellowship at the retreat. Through
the retreat, I got to know many of the FCMers better and a few of them have become
close spiritual friends. One of them was Patrick, whom I know I can always depend on
to discuss about spiritual things. I am sure others who attended the last retreat were
also similarly blessed by it. ☺

Having testified of the wonderful time we had at the previous retreat, it is now my
pleasure, on behalf of the retreat committee, to bring you a short introduction on what
we will be doing for the upcoming FCM retreat.

Theme and Objectives

The theme of the upcoming retreat is “Biblical


Courtship”. In a time of mass communications
and entertainment, we are easily buffeted by a
myriad of movies, newspapers, magazines and
other forms of media. These sources often
purport various ideas about love, dating,
relationships, marriages and sex. However, we
as Christians should not allow such ideas to
influence us. Rather, our only rule of faith and life
ought to be the Scriptures (cf. Westminster
Confession of Faith Chapter 1). But what does
the Bible say on such a topic? In times of moral
declension such as this, knowing how to handle
courtship biblically becomes extremely urgent
and important. Some may feel that it may be too
early to consider such a topic. However, it is
better to know earlier than to know later, when it
might be too late and find ourselves falling into
the pitfalls laid for us by the world. It is hoped
that through this retreat, participants will be more informed on how we ought to
approach and handle such an issue.

We will be approaching this topic from a few major thrusts, namely:

(1) What is love?

(2) What is courtship?

(3) What is the biblical purpose of entering into a courtship?

(4) What are the qualities of a good life partner?

(5) How do I know if it is God’s will for me to be single?

(6) When should I begin courtship?

(7) How should I conduct myself during courtship?

(8) How should I maintain and ensure that a relationship/ courtship will last?

Of course, these are but few of the questions that will be dealt with during the retreat. A
frank and open approach will be adopted for this retreat. If any of you have any

various FCM coordinators.

It is the hoped that through this retreat, participants will be more confident, assured and
aware of the Biblical principles underpinning this issue. More importantly, it is our prayer
that the retreat will be a time of spiritual refreshment and sweet fellowship, just like its
predecessor. Indeed, I hope that all of you will continue to strive in prayer with us for
this retreat, so that it may be glorifying to God’s name. May all the saints who attend the
retreat be edified for Christ’s sake.

In the meantime, let us continue to be a witness for Christ wherever we go, to be the
salt and light of this world. Let us not lose the vision of God in our lives. Rather, let Him
be the center of all things in our lives and maintain a close communion with Him each
day. ☺ At this point, allow me to leave you with these few words:

I will remember You are my God.

endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the
throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners
against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.” ~ Hebrews 12:1-3.
