Content and structure

Structure: introduction, body, conclusion

 Introduction: attention-grabbing e.g. a warm-up task, a joke, a question, a brainstorming) and must provide
an overview of the talk
 Body: elaborate on the main points – may assign a task to maintain interest; logically built-up
 Conclusion: summarize the talk, check task given beforehand, or assign a follow -up task/discussion task

Content: relevance ( of info to topic)

 well- explained; use special terminology sparingly, and explain them


 use reliable sources and list then for others so they can follow up
 research your topic thoroughly
 use data, facts to support what you are saying

 show interest and enthusiasm in the topic


 arouse and maintain interest
 involve the audience ( assign tasks, ask questions, ask for opinion, initiate discussion etc.)
 keep eye-contact with the audience
 use body language ( but sparingly )
 speak loudly enough and comprehensibly
 do not read your talk out
 show self-confidence
 use discourse markers to help the audience to follow you
 presenters should cooperate smoothly

Visuals:

 visuals (handout, PPT, poster) should not be crammed with information – should contain only main points
 visuals should back up what you are saying, help the audience to follow you (not to distract or merely
entertain audience)
 should be visually attractive, written in large enough letters and error free
 should help you to maintain interest

Language:

 the talk should be grammatically accurate


 the vocabulary and style should be adjusted to the audience
 a good range of vocabulary should be used correctly and with correct pronunciation
 use appropriate terminology but with explanations and sparingly
 use appropriate intonation patterns and chunking to be comprehensible to your audience
