Section – A

a) What are the elements of a satellite communication? Explain each of them with
suitable block diagram

b) Differentiate between geosynchronous and geostationary orbit.

c) A satellite is in an elliptical orbit with a perigee of 1000 km and an


apogee of 4000 km. Using a mean earth radius of 6378.14 km, find the period of
the orbit in hours, minutes, and second, and the eccentricity of the orbit.

d) What is orbit. Derive an expression for the equation of satellite orbit.

e) The apogee and perigee of an elliptical satellite orbits are 3000 km .Determine
the eccentricity , semi-major axis and semi-minor axis.

f) What is mean by look angles. Explain them with reference to a geostationary


satellite and earth station

a) Explain transponders and explain the double conversion transponder of Satellite.

b) Drive general link equation. Find out the expression for C/N and G/T ratio.

c) Describe the telemetry, tracking and command facilities of a satellite


communication system.

d) A satellite at a distance of 40,000 km from a point on the earth’s


surface radiates a power of 10w from an antenna with a gain of 17db
in the direction of the observer. find the flux density at the receiving point, and the
power received by an antenna at this point with an effective area of 10 m2.
e) Explain the noise temperature with expression for equivalent noise temperature.

f) Explain attitude and orbit control system(AOCS).

a) Briefly discuss the FM pri-emphasis and de-emphasis circuit.

b) Explain the DA-TDMA burst structure. In what way it is different from a simple
TDMA burst structure.

c) Define TDMA, FDMA and CDMA. Discuss their receiver merit and demerit.

d) A satellite transponder has a bandwidth of 36 MHz. Earth station use RRC filters
with α=04. What is the maximum bit rate that can be sent through this
transponder with
a) BPSK
b) QPSK.

a) Compare linear block codes, cycles and convolution codes by giving their
advantages.

b) What do you meant by error detection and correction.

c) What is channel capacity? Derive an expression of channel.

d) The generator polynomial of a (7,4) cyclic codes is G(P)=P3+P+1.obtain all the


code vectors for the code in nonsystematic and systematic form.

a) Discuss the various application areas of VSAT and data broadest satellite.

b) List the various application of satellite and explain each of them in briefly.

c) Discuss the working of global positioning system. List their various application
also.
d) Draw the block diagram of outdoor unit of a DBS home receiver. Explain the
function of each briefly.
