Young Abolitionist 2016 Project Reflection

Name: Pedro Cux

This Reflection is an assessment on what you know and learned through the project. Please make sure
you complete each question in paragraph form. It is worth 25 points.

1. How did your group make social change in your community through this project (design for
social change)? What did you learn about your role as a Young Abolitionist?
-Our group made social change in our community by informing our community about a serious matter,
that being human trafficking. We informed people by saying the different types of Human Trafficking
and who is affected. Our main goal was to let people know about this huge problem going on and that
anyone could be a victim of this. Something I learned about being a Young Abolitionist is that we play a
major role in our community to inform others about problems we may face and how to handle it and we
wanted to inform people about events occurring that stand against something bad.
2. Describe in detail what your group was asked to do for this project.
-What our team was asked to do was to create a prezi and infographic that will inform and raise
awareness to our community about human trafficking. We had to describe the 5 types of human
trafficking and give facts about it those five being child soldiers, bonded labor, forced labor, sex
trafficking, and involuntary domestic servitude. The prezi having most of the information since we had
to present it to a group that was out of school. And a infographic holding the most important parts of
information and having a hotline number which people can call, also to be presented to a group out of
school.

3. Describe in detail your own contribution for your team on this project. Describe the steps your
team used to complete the project including how you dispersed the workload among your team
members (who did what)?
-Throughout the project just two people put most of the work for the infographic and the prezi. And
those two being Jose and I, Jose focused mainly on the infographic since I don't know how to use
illustrator so well. And I focused on the prezi we had, and so that was my contribution to the team.
Creating the prezi, adding all information, arranging our information to make it professional and I helped
Jose with the infographic by giving my opinions and ideas on what things should change just like he did
to me. Tais and Rachel, they would both be absent at times or come late but they both did put a part for
the infographic and prezi. Tais helped Jose with the infographic by sharing her ideas on what the
infographic should look like and she helped me with putting our information from slides to the prezi. And
Rachel she mainly helped me rather than Jose by coming up with some images we can use in our
prezi. Overall my main contribution was to create and finish our groups prezi so we can present it to
both a group outside and our class.

4. What is an infographic?
-An infographic is like this one paged type of thing where some facts and the most important
information of a certain topic are added. Also containing visuals such as charts or diagrams used to
represent information or data.

5. Describe minimum 3 Illustrator techniques (tools) you used to create your infographic. Include
the development of your ideas at each of the 3 design phases of your final infographic. (include
design principles)
A tool that was used to create our background for the infographic was the gradient tool, used to pick a
certain color and set it as our background. We used the colors black and white so we clicked and
dragged from bottom to top to have the colors transition from one to the other. Another tool used would
be the shape tool, this would be used to create all the little figures we made (people) to represent every
type of human trafficking. And lastly the most used tool we used was the text tool to type down all of our
information. Used to share out what we thought was important for our community to know.

6. How did the feedback process (from your peers, your teacher, advisors, etc) influence your final
product. Highlight some of the feedback you received (see feedback forms) and explain how it
affected your project toward improvement.
The feedback helped us greatly in improving the way we presented for the final. The main piece of
feedback that we got was to stop reading off the slides we had since we would turn our backs to the
audience making it unprofessional since we should be ready to present. And the way in which our team
got over this problem was to simply make a separate document with the information we were each
going to say and so we have a paper to look at rather than turning back to look at the screen. Over all
the changes weren't so big since everyone liked the way things looked, just that they suggested a
change of colors or to move one thing from one certain place.

7. How would you evaluate or critique your own work? What was successful about the design of
your Infographic/prezi and what evidence is there to demonstrate it? What do you feel was
unsuccessful and why? Provide details and explain.
-I would say that overall our work came out pretty good since we were able to finish and present it to a
group and our class. Things that were successful was that our infographic and prezi were finished and
looked good also that everyone in our team was able to get together and present as one, I feel the
infographic and prezi were good since the feedback given to us was mainly to change colors of text, or
move something to some other place and everyone did say that they liked how both looked. And for our
team being gathered up it worked well since everyone was present and everyone had a part to play,
equally divided so no one would have to say more than another. Something I felt was unsuccessful was
team contribution during the time of creating our infographic and prezi since two people will either be
absent or come late to class. And so it affected us since only two people were here to finish both
required assignments and the other two would be behind or stuck on what is happening.
8. What could you do better in both your infographic and prezi in order for CAST LA to deliver it to
the community?
I feel that we could've had all our team members participate equally that way we have more ideas to put
down and everyone plays a part. Another thing will be to not rush our information later resulting in typos
or a sentence not making sense. This would help since it will show that our work was done with
everyone's effort and that it was well organized.

9. Describe your experience in raising awareness to your community groups presentations. How
do you feel you did overall? What were the challenges and what went well? How did you feel
after raising awareness about Human Trafficking?
I feel that we did pretty good overall for our presentation and I feel the experience of informing others
was great. The challenges we faced were looking for a community group to present to and also having
team members ready on what they will be saying since some didn't really practice and looked over what
they were going to say. Although these things were a problem we still managed to find a group to
present to and our team members may have struggled a little bit but they managed to know what to say
and said it clearly. I felt great after having to inform my community about this topic because I felt it was
a really good thing to let people know about what is happening around and to be aware. It was all for a
good cause and hopefully the people we presented to will keep on spreading even more the
awareness.

10. What aspects of this project were challenging and why?

For me the part that was challenging was having to use illustrator, since i'm not used to using that
program and get stuck really fast. And so it was a challenge since only one person in our team really
knew how to use it. We basically had to rely on him and the way to help him was by giving our ideas on
how certain things should look.

11. What recommendations or changes would you make for next year’s Young Abolitionist project?
Would you recommend this project for next year’s juniors? why or why not?
One thing I would recommend is to give students more time to search for a community group they can
present to. And to also allow groups to present to the same community group as long as the people
they are presenting to are different. Overall I would recommend this project for next years juniors since
its a serious topic and it's for a good cause.
12. Which of the 3 projects in this semester was your favorite and describe why.
My top 3 projects in this semester would have to be Parking Day LA, Voter’s Guide, and Human
Trafficking. Parking Day LA was a fun one since we were able to be as creative as we wanted to and
we were able to present outside rather than inside as always. The Voter’s Guide as well because again
we were able to be creative on how we wanted it to look and it helps us to build trust and friendships
with those who are seniors. LAstly this project we just had was a fun one because it's something done
for the better good of our community. It’s a serious matter that informs our community and overall it
helps us students to go out and share our work with other groups that aren't within school grounds.
