Three Phase Circuits

1. Calculate the line currents in the three wire Y-Y system shown below:

An: 𝐼𝑎 = 6.81∠ − 21.8° 𝐴, 𝐼𝑏 = 6.81∠ − 141.8° 𝐴; 𝐼𝑐 = 6.81∠98.2° 𝐴

2. A balanced abc-sequence Y-connected source with 𝑉𝑎𝑛 = 100∠10° is

connected to a ∆-connected load (8+j4)Ω per phase. Calculate the phase and
line currents.
Ans: 33.54 ∠ − 16.57° 𝐴, 33.54 ∠ − 136.57° 𝐴, 33.54 ∠ − 256.57° 𝐴

3. A balanced ∆-connected load having an impedance 20-j15 Ω is connected to a

∆-connected positive sequence generator having Vab = 330 ∠0° V. Calculate
the phase currents of the load and the line currents.
Ans: 𝐼𝐴𝐵 = 13.2∠ 36.87° 𝐴, 𝐼𝐵𝐶 = 13.2∠ − 81.13° 𝐴; 𝐼𝐶𝐴 = 13.2∠156.87° 𝐴
𝐼𝑎 = 22.86∠ 6.87° 𝐴, 𝐼𝑏 = 22.86∠ − 113.13° 𝐴; 𝐼𝑐 = 22.86∠126.87° 𝐴

4. A balanced Y-connected load with a phase impedance 40+j25 Ω is supplied by

a balanced, positive-sequence ∆-connected source with a line voltage of 210V.
Calculate the phase currents. Use Vab as reference.
Ans: 𝐼𝐴𝑁 = 2.57∠ − 62° 𝐴, 𝐼𝐵𝑁 = 2.57∠ − 182° 𝐴; 𝐼𝐶𝑁 = 2.57∠58° 𝐴
