Brioche Knitting Rules

One needs to approach brioche knitting with an open mind, with a different mind-set
than regular knitting. Brioche knitting has some rules, but, like all rules, they can be
broken to create interesting effects.

sIn brioche knitting, a stitch with its yarn p = purl

over is considered ONE stitch. This is very
important. The yarn over is not counted
separately. When you count 4 stitches,
you will actually have 6 loops of yarn on
the needle. Think of it as a stitch with a
shawl over its shoulders.
sTwo rows are worked for each counted
row that appears on the face of the fabric.
Half of the stitches are worked in one row
and the other half (the stitches that were
slipped in the former row) are worked
in the following row. When you need to
count rows, count only the stitches going
up one knit column. When you are told to
work 4 rows, count 4 knit column stitches,
even though you will have worked 8 rows,
or 4 rows back and forth. Two worked rows
= One counted row.
sIncreases and decreases need to be
worked in pairs in order to maintain a
brioche stitch pattern.
sl1 = slip 1 stitch purlwise
yb = yarn to back under needle
yf = yarn to front under needle
RS = right or public side of the work
WS = wrong side of the work
LH = left hand needle
RH = right hand needle
Brioche Knitting Terminology and
Abbreviations
I have developed a set of abbreviations
and terminology specifically for brioche
knitting. Most often, this is simply a “br” (for
“brioche”) placed in front of the traditional
abbreviation.
DS = dark side of work - the “knit” columns
on this side of the work are in the dark color.

LS = light side of work - the “knit” columns

General Knitting Abbreviations on this side of the work are in the light color.

k = knit
k1tbl = knit one stitch through the
back loop

DC = dark color - use the dark-colored yarn.
LC = light color - use the light-colored yarn.
LS LC means the side of the work facing
you has light-colored “knit” columns and
you will be working with the light-colored
yarn in that row.
brk (brioche knit - also known as a “bark”)
= knit the stitch (that was slipped in the
previous row) together with its yarn over.
brp (brioche purl - also known as a “burp”)
= purl the stitch (that was slipped in the
previous row) together with its yarn over.
The sl1yo is the action that creates the
shawled stitch. This action works differently
for a bark row than for a burp row, but
one manipulation remains standard–that
the working yarn must always be in front
before slipping the stitch. On a burp row
the working yarn is in place before slipping
the stitch but in a bark row you need to first
bring the yarn to the front and then slip the
stitch. This worked stitch with its yarn over
shawl is considered one stitch.
sl1yo following a k or brk stitch = bring the
working yarn under the needle to the front
of the work, slip the next stitch purlwise,
then bring the yarn over the needle (and
over the slipped stitch) to the back, in
position to work the following stitch.

sl1yo following a p or brp stitch = working
yarn is already in front, slip the next stitch
purlwise, then bring the yarn over the
needle (and over the slipped stitch), then
to the front under the needle, into position
to work the following stitch.
brRsl dec (2-stitch decrease that slants to
the right, involves 3 stitches) = slip the first
stitch knitwise, knit the next stitch, pass
the slipped stitch over, place stitch on left
hand needle and pass the following stitch
over. Place stitch on right hand needle — 2
stitches decreased.
brLsl dec (2-stitch decrease that slants to
the left, involves 3 stitches) = slip the first
stitch knitwise, knit the next stitch, place
stitch on left hand needle, pass the
following stitch over, place stitch on right
hand needle, pass the slipped stitch over —
2 stitches decreased.
4st br dec (4-stitch decrease, involves 5
stitches) = slip 2 stitches separately knitwise,
place following stitch on a cable needle
to front, k1, pass second slipped stitch
over, place stitch on left hand needle and
pass following stitch over, transfer stitch to
right hand needle, pass first slipped stitch
over, place stitch from cable needle to
left hand needle, place live st on left hand
needle, pass cable needle stitch over.
Place finished stitch on RH. — 4 stitches
decreased.

right edge kyok (2-stitch increase worked
on an edge stitch) = for right edge stitch,
slip the first stitch, pick up edge stitch from
row below, lift it onto the left hand needle,
place the slipped stitch back onto left
hand needle and work it together with the
first stitch as follows: knit into both stitches
leaving stitches on the left hand needle,
yarn over (yarn forward under needle then
over needle to back), then knit into
same stitches
left edge kyok = for the left edge stitch,
work to the last stitch, slip it to the right
hand needle so that you can pick up the
last stitch in the row below, then place
the slipped stitch back onto the left
hand needle and work as above —
2 stitches increased.

Two-Color Brioche Chart Notes
sRead the chart as though the light side
(LS) is the Right Side (RS/public side) of the
work. and the dark side (DS) is the Wrong
Side (WS/private side) of the work.
sAll rows are worked twice, once in the
light color (LC) yarn (indicated on the
chart with a white background), then the
stitches are slid to the other end of the
needle and are worked in the dark color
(DC) yarn (indicated on the chart with a
greyed background).
sSymbols in the legend are given with both
LS and DS instructions. Be sure to execute
the symbol action that corresponds to the
side of fabric and the yarn color you are
working on.
sOdd numbered rows are light side (LS)
rows. These charted LS rows are worked
from right to left. The dark side (DS) rows
are worked from left to right.
sAll increases and decreases are worked in
a LS LC Row.

Pattern Notes
This stitch pattern is basically a selvedge-
edged 1-color brioche stitch with an
increase/decrease pattern running
diagonally through it, creating the motif.

Needles
Size US 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed (two)
or circular needle, or size needed to
obtain gauge.
Gauge
One pattern repeat, 25 sts and 20 rows =
7” (18 cm) and 4.33” (11 cm). Gauge is not
that vital for the outcome of this scarf.
Finished Measurements
7” (18 cm) wide × 64.5” (164 cm) long.
Notions
Small cable needle. I use a safety-pin-like
stitch marker.
Pattern Notes
When working 2-color brioche, you don’t
turn the work until both colors are worked.
After working the LC, slide the work to the
other end of the needle to work the DC.
In the first few rows of the pattern, I have
included how to handle the DC at the
beginning and end of a row so that it is
